Guys, I've just realized something. Circles by Post Malone is the new Smooth by Santana/Rob Thomas. A massive smash hit Rock crossover that spanned the end of one decade and the beginning of another, while having an absurdly long run in the Top 10 (also, both are really good, so they have that in common too). Songs to make the year-end Top 10: The Box by Roddy Ricch Circles by Post Malone Don’t Start Now by Dua Lipa Blinding Lights by The Weeknd Someone You Loved by Lewis Capaldi Life is Good is dropping faster than expected but it still could make it as well.

Has there been a weaker number 1 in the streaming era than Mood? Or even this century? It's not number 1 in any category. Girls Like You spent most of its run at the #1 in a similarly weak position, even getting replaced from the radio’s top spot during its last few weeks.

It seems some of us have different perspectives about this year, I thought this was one of the best years for music. Definitely didn’t think it was mediocre or even bad. I feel like the chart year this year was OK but I have a deep seeded loathing for this year because of how much better it could have been. Like my #10 cutoff for the best list looks like it's gonna land at Supalonely which is very good, higher than last two years for sure. But if I were to do a top 10 list of songs that should have been a hit but weren't it's just goddamn tragic.
Similarly I feel like Murphy's Law was in full effect for the bad songs, like not only are there a lot of bad songs this year but so many were so avoidable! It's like every single bad song that has any remote possibility of success becomes a hit. Even some that don't have any remote possibility of success like what the actual f**k is Ily by Surf Mesa doing in the top 40. The only bright spot exception to all of this is how hard we faded 6ix9ine's comeback.
So yeah really can't wait to put this year in the past.
I mean, you could say that about most years. Like I would consider 2015 to be one of my favorite chart years ever, yet the list of songs that should have been hits but weren't completely dwarfs the songs that were hits. For me though, that just enhances the year’s overall quality. And in case anyone’s wondering, here’s what my 2015 best “should’ve been hits” list looks like (must’ve been released and promoted as a single with some chance at mainstream success) 1. The Blacker the Berry-Kendrick Lamar 2. Leave a Trace-CHVRCHES 3. One Love-Marianas Trench 4. King Kunta-Kendrick Lamar 5. Run Away With Me-Carly Rae Jepsen 6. Tear in my Heart-twenty one pilots 7. These Walls-Kendrick Lamar 8. Bloodstream-Ed Sheeran 9. Dime Store Cowgirl-Kacey Kusgraves 10. Believe-Mumford & Sons HMs -Ghost Town-Adam Lambert -Someone New-Hozier -Alright-Kendrick Lamar -Homegrown-Zac Brown Band -Greek Tragedy-The Wombats -Brother-Need to Breathe -Geronimo-Sheppard -Here’s to the Zeros-Marianas Trench -Biscuits-Kacey Musgraves -Tennessee Whiskey-Chris Stapleton To get how highly I think of this list, I would’ve put Dime Store Cowgirl at #4 on my best hits list. And The Blacker the Berry and Leave a Trace would both be on my “favorite songs of all time” list

That is a solid group of should-have-been hits. It's hard to think of a year where there aren't a few songs at least that should have been so much bigger than they are (last year, quite notably, had "Slide Away" and "Nothing Breaks Like A Heart" featuring Miley Cyrus. But 2015 had a particularly strong selection, that is true.

So since it's the middle of the autumn, what songs do you think will be caught between years? Songs That I Think Will Be Caught:
1) Bang!
2) Tap In 3) Said Sum 4) One Beer 5) I Should Probably Go To Bed 6) What You Know About Love
7) Midnight Sky 8) Heather
9) Happy Anywhere
10) Some Girls
Here's also a list of songs that also risk being caught between years, but personally I think they should be fine and make 2021's year end list.
1) My Ex's Best Friend 2) 7 Summers 3) Kings And Queens

So if I Hope makes the year-end next year will the version with Charlie Puth be credited?

So if I Hope makes the year-end next year will the version with Charlie Puth be credited? Yes, since it’s the dominant version of the song on the charts. He will be credited in every chart except the country ones. Beyoncé will also be credited for Savage. DaBaby, Tory Lanez and Lil Wayne will be credited on WHAT’S POPPIN and so on and so forth. For instance, Nicki Minaj won’t be credited on Say So, since her version charted for only two weeks and the solo version became the dominant version again.

Looks like Better Together is back. I’ll be interested to see if it can be a big enough hit to make the 2021 YE, or if it’ll be about as big as his last two singles. If so, losing 4/5 weeks to this chart year will be a pretty big blow, and would be about as mistimed as Even Though I’m Leaving was

Songs with Chances of getting Caught in between years:
Better Together - this seems to be the next Luke Combs single that's being pushed on radio and it's heads or tails if this will make the year-end list. If it manages to survive, it continues Luke Combs' reign as the King of Bottom Top 10 year-end spots.
Heather - streaming is starting to stall out and it desperately needs of that big radio push. It has a bit of airplay but it's pitiful and it needs to start building more airplay fast
you broke me first - similar situation to Heather, though it's streaming hasn't peaked yet
7 Summers - I actually think this is going to make next year's year-end list. I think country radio is just waiting for More Than My Hometown's run to end to start pushing this. I expect this will have a Bones-like chart run.
Midnight Sky - only area it's strong in right now is airplay and even then it's not a powerhouse. Unfortunate it's going to get caught
24 - it's only big on streaming, it has no radio presence, so expect this to definitely get caught
my ex's best friend - similar situation to you broke me and Heather only the streaming did peak when the album dropped so unfortunately I do see this getting caught in between years, especially when it has no radio right now.
Happy Anywhere/Love You Like I Used To/I Should Probably Go to Bed/Some Girls - all country hits solely reliant on airplay. The only one I could see making a year-end list is I Should Probably Go to Bed since Dan + Shay have better airplay longevity than other country stars.
Runnin/Mr. Right Now - It's peaked on streaming and 21 Savage isn't an airplay name so sadly this is going to get caught
What You Know Bout Love - bad timing really hampered this one. It's going to have an identical run as Mood Swings but isn't going to make any year-end because it got popular in September. sad
Kings & Queens - mentioned it before but it is rising like a monster on airplay so I expect this to make next year's list
BANG! - remember that time we gave AJR a big hit and it almost made a year end list?
FRANCHISE - it's getting better radio than most rap songs and if Travis times his album right, I could actually see this making next year's year-end.
Wonder - it's peaked on streaming but it's radio run hasn't stalled so I'm also expecting this to make next year's list
Circles - It. Won't. DIE!
Dreams - it's losing a bit on streaming and there's not airplay yet. Hopefully Fleetwood Mac can drop their album soon so this gets a boost

Does anyone feel like radio is having too much power this year? A lot of songs that’ll be in the year end list of 2020 are radio driven songs that did mediocre in streaming. Should Billboard change this by the end of the year?

Should Billboard change this by the end of the year? I think it's more to do with streaming numbers being down compared to previous years and airplay is the only consistent metric right now with the lockdown. Not to mention the monstrous album bombs this year that kept knocking down songs.

So is Heather just not gonna become a hit? It feels like the type of slodge that radio plays to death. Also I think Bang! should make 2021 year end, I said before that it'll have a similar run to Trampoline and I'm sticking by that prediction.

I feel like "Bang!" will end up more like "broken" as opposed to "Trampoline" but I guess it is still increasing so we'll see.

Ya, but the radio also doesn’t like to play anything that goes beyond the standard gender roles besides Sam Smith.

Should Billboard change this by the end of the year? Not necessarily since its audience are down. But both digital song sales and streaming have been down even more especially recently with few exceptions (Dynamite for sales, for example). Which explains how Mood managed to sneak in this week at #1.

Out of the current top 20 of the 24th of October, which songs do you predict will not make the 2021 Year End list?

Circles will be gone by Christmas, and aside from that, I expect Blinding Lights, I Hope, Got What I Got, One of Them Girls, Watermelon Sugar, What’s Poppin and Dreams to all miss. Go Crazy, Before You Go, For the Night and Be Like That will all be borderline

And The Blacker the Berry and Leave a Trace would both be on my “favorite songs of all time” list Ok but like that's completely different. None of those ever had any chance besides Tear In My Heart and some HMs. I'm not counting songs like August by Taylor Swift that are phenomenal but also could never have been expected to become hits, I mean songs that in any other dimensional version of this year would have ruled the charts.
So here'd be my top 10 songs that should have been hits in 2020 so far. 1. Dua Lipa - Physical (I don't even need to continue really the fact that this wasn't a hit is enough to throw the entire year away) 2. Dj Regard - Ride It 3. Doja Cat - Boss Bitch
4. The Weeknd - In Your Eyes 5. Post Malone - Take What You Want 6. Halsey - Graveyard 7. Marshmello & Halsey - Be Kind 8. Taylor Swift - Cardigan 9. Niall Horan - Nice To Meet Ya 10. Dua Lipa - Hallucinate
That's just off the top of my head I'm probably missing a bunch but that list is fucking insane and honestly makes me resent even the scant few good songs we did get.

I mean, I’d say most of them had a chance at making it. Especially King Kunta and Run Away With Me. Bloodstream was a UK hit that would have been a hit if promoted in the US. Believe was in the top 200 of 2015. Dime Store Cowgirl would be a hit if country radio didn’t blackball Kacey Musgraves for no real reason. Even These Walls and The Blacker the Berry charted during Kendrick’s album bomb week. And I included One Love and Leave a Trace because MT has been really successful in Canada (with One Love actually getting US promotion and charting on the top 40 airplay charts) and CHVRCHES managed to get a hit with Marshmello last year. So I’d say everything checks out.
That said, hell yes for Physical being #1. It was so obviously ready to be a hit that this past summer, my radio station added it to their rotation even though it wasn’t promoted as a single (same thing happened for Cruel Summer by Taylor Swift, which also 100% should have and would have been a hit with the right promotion). If I were looking at a “should’ve been hits” list for this year, it would probably be
1. Physical-Dua Lipa 2. Exile-Taylor Swift ft. Bon Iver 3. Cruel Summer-Taylor Swift 4. Be Kind-Marshmello & Halsey 5. Ain’t Always the Cowboy-Jon Pardi 6. In Your Eyes-The Weeknd 7. More Hearts Than Mine-Ingrid Andress 8. Level of Concern-twenty one pilots 9. Sugar-BROCKHAMPTON 10. Midnight Sky-Miley Cyrus
I’m leaving off Levitating, Diamonds and Stick That in Your Country Song in case they become hits. If More Hearts Than Mine actually makes it, slot everything else up a spot and put The Plan by Travis Scott
Also, this is just me personally, but I’d consider Take What You Want, Graveyard and Nice to Meet You to be 2019 “should’ve been hits” (the first two were caught between years, and would’ve made it if every song’s run was condensed into one year)

concerning Physical, idk.... it sounds like such a difficult song to become a hit in the US.... it was a big hit WW tho, it's still #107 Global 200 excl US after 9 months!

Honestly, this kind of makes me think there should be a thread for should’ve been hits. Would anyone else here look at it if I were to make one?
