Is it bad that I enjoyed a lot of the songs that reviewers consider the worst hits? Roxanne, Sunday Best, ily, I Hope, hot girl bummer, Falling etc. I don't get the hate for ily. Sure it probably got fueled by Payola but soundwise, the song seems pretty harmless. Also, I don't understand why it got popular now when it should've been in the summer. Basically because it just doesn't even register as a song. I mean sure there aren't any stupid lyrics, the production is fine, and Emilee is only a slightly bad singer rather than a terrible one, but if you were assigned a 6 page essay and turn in just a thesis paragraph you're gonna get a failing grade even if you have no typos or illogical arguments.
Of course there've been less lyrical songs like Turn Down For What but I'd actually argue that the lyrics here make it actively worse because they give you something to focus on and really beat you over the head with the fact that nobody here even tried to come up with anything, they just put 3 lines of badly sung Frankie Valli over an interchangeable beat. To bring up the Turn Down For What comparison again that song worked because the focus was on DJ Snake's wild instrumental and the few interjections we did get from Lil Jon were there to add to the atmosphere, but here it's just piling laziness on top of uninspired filler
it's somehow still not the worst of the year though.

ily is so low effort it's unnoticeable. typical derivative and inoffensive radio filler, hard to either like it or dislike it
tbh the best worst songs that stick in people's memory are spectatular trainwrecks that burn bright and fast. it's the disasters like Yummy or the 6ix9ine songs that made 2020 such a great and interesting year for bad music
