Wow so many Christmas songs! What is the highest amount of Christmas songs charting on any given week?
Also if Cozy Little Christmas by Katy Perry re-enter's will it have to be above 50 or can it re-enter anywhere? It peaked at #53 last year and only charted for a few weeks but I'm not sure how all the rules work with the age of the song. Same with Santa tell me by Ariana.
My personal favourite Christmas song (and a criminally underrated song IMO) is Wrapped in Red by Kelly Clarkson, what a gem !

Underneath the Tree by Clarkson is my favorite βnewβ Christmas song. Hope it re-enters. Based on last week's Holiday 100, it is likely just below "Happy Holiday/The Holiday Season" so it should re-enter next week.

Iβve never understood the evergreen appeal and high spin counts of #18 and #39. They are so kitschy and sonically weak compared to most of the other βcoreβ Xmas classics. Iβd love to see a burn/net negative on the Top 50 Xmas gold. I wonder how much the continued expansion of Alexa/Echo has contributed to streaming this season. It turned out to be a major factor that seemed to surprise everyone here that week last year when Xmas songs just bombed the chart. I get what you mean about 18, it isn't as flashy as the other holiday songs charting. I disagree about 39, tho. "Feliz Navidad" is here to stay, though. Everyone I know knows all the words (including me). Its definitely popular w the incoming generation

"Santa Tell Me" would definitely fall under the "too old" category and would need to reach the top 50 to chart. "Cozy Little Christmas" is a good question, though. It's only a year old and never went recurrent last year, so it would make sense it wouldn't need to wait until the top 50 to re-enter yet, but I wouldn't be shocked if Billboard made it wait until top 50.

Am I the only one who prefers Oh Santa over AIWFCIY? It's an actual catchy song with a great melody that if you remove the chimes and change the lyrics to sth not festive it will still be a good tune. I hope team Mimi starts pushing that somehow after AIWFCIY gets its eventual peak at #1.

Love "Oh Santa" and feel it's far fresher at this point (with "AIWFCIY" being played into the ground years now). Would love to see it garner yearly success for a change!

Wow so many Christmas songs! What is the highest amount of Christmas songs charting on any given week? It was 21 on the Hot 100 dated January 3rd, 2019. I think the chart dated January 4th, 2020 will definitely have more. Since there already 13 holiday songs, that highest to date number could even be surpassed on an earlier chart.

Here's a question which admittedly might be a bit premature: If Mariah keeps having big success with AIWFCIY every Christmas (which seems likely), and it keeps topping the chart at Christmas every year, will Billboard just allow it to be the #1 song every Christmas from now on (which doesn't seem fair to other artists), or will they limit its ability to re-chart eventually?
Because while it can only be her 19th #1 once, it can keep accumulating weeks at #1 for as long as Billboard allows it.
But is that fair?

Because while it can only be her 19th #1 once, it can keep accumulating weeks at #1 for as long as Billboard allows it. But is that fair? I get what you're saying, but Billboard's charts are supposed to measure popularity. Fairness isn't the issue. Should the #2 song be crowned #1 because the #1 song is too old? In this case, it's highly possible that RATCT or another Xmas gold song would be the #2 that would be #1 instead. Should OTR have spent 19 weeks at #1 - more than AIWFCIY will likely ever spend at #1? Is that really any different? It seems like another Billboard slippery slope. Billboard has had bizarre exclusions and barriers over the years - like Into The Groove not allowed to chart on H100 because it was only a 12" single despite that single going gold, massive airplay and charting on the Black Singles Chart. Holiday songs were not allowed to chart during various eras despite them being more popular than many currents. Michael Jackson's songs weren't allowed after he passed despite us knowing they were hugely popular that week. Billboard already has the Top 25 and Top 50 rule to suppress recurrents/older songs. I'm not sure there's a benefit to keeping out the most popular songs if they reaching the upper parts of the chart.

Holy s**t Mariah is already #3? I swear there will come a time where it went #1 the week after Halloween Iβm calling it; within a year or two, older holiday songs wonβt be allowed to chart anymore. No way labels are going to like how holiday songs are truly taking over the charts, and for weeks now.

The chart rules changed to reflect how streaming allows the public to choose what is popular at any given time. If they change the rules again, it will be against their own idea of representing the listeners.

The main problem is though, so many Holiday classics are beginning to chart that they're going to push current hits into recurrent status while they're still huge or have yet to even peak. Like there's gonna be 20~ (if not more) Holiday classics charting this year. I'm sure in a year or two there will be 30+. Songs will go from being in top 10 to being pushed straight off into recurrent. Then when January comes the chart will look so inaccurate since they can't rechart. It'll be like the 90s charts where half the biggest current hits weren't charting. Billboard is either gonna have to push Holiday classics back to Holiday 100 only, or seriously change recurrent rules.

Keep in mind the popularity of Christmas music has changed over the years. Before 2001, radio formats didnβt switch to all or heavily Christmas oriented playlists like they do today.
The past couple years have seen an especially large surge in the popularity of Christmas music. Whoβs to say this level of popularity will be sustained or continue to increase? If public opinion shows people donβt want to hear as much Christmas music, it will be reflected on the charts.
The charts measure popularity, and thatβs what theyβre doing. Iβd say the Hot 100 more accurately reflects popularity than at any point in the past when there were all kinds of rules preventing songs from charting.

If holiday songs crowd the chart, it looks bad for their current music and also itβs hard for them to measure how their current music is doing. I could be wrong, of course, but I predict within 3 years thereβs a rule change. Sooner if βAIWFCIYβ gets #1 tbh.

But itβs only a few weeks a year (when most of the industry goes into hibernation mode anyway) and reflects the huge demand for Christmas music. Itβs showing there is a lot of money to be made in playing Christmas music, releasing Christmas music, etc. Itβs not like the Christmas overload doesnβt provide valuable information to those in the industry.

i mean is it really unfair though? it's the "hot" 100. ask any human being in america what the hottest songs are right now and practically no one will say aiwfciy. yes, the current formula spits out christmas songs in bunch but very clearly that's inaccurate to the pulse of modern music.

And then also nobody is gonna release during Q4, because they don't want to have to compete with 40 Holiday classics on the chart. A song that would've normally had points to go #10, being at #46 due to dozens of Holiday classics and such will ofcourse look bad publicity wise even if it really isn't. No major artists will release October-December, if they know they wait until January and potentially end up with a much higher peak and better chart run. Which then as a consequence, has effect on lots of other things. This discussion is gonna definitely keep happening a lot. It'll be interesting to see how Billboard handles it.

just make it a hot 200 during the holiday season and change recurrency rules
|
|
|
Post by Lukas on Dec 10, 2019 11:01:39 GMT -5
The charts should definitely still be on point as to what people are listening to. No changing that at all, ever.
However, recurrency rules can definitely change since they're arbitrary.
I think that for later years Billboard could drop recurrency rules during the Christmas season only.
Where, songs that already went recurrent won't be able to go back on the charts. But any songs that were on the chart that haven't gone recurrent yet can't. They'd drop to #65 or something like that, sure, but without the Christmas songs they'd be at around #40.
Once the Christmas freeze ends and the Christmas songs are off of the charts, then normal recurrency can resume.
