I was listening to some of Bee's earlier albums (B'Day remains FLAWLESS and her career best, by the way :'() and was struck by the times she mentioned "House of Dereon". With her continued success in music and the media coverage the brand it received back then, it was really interesting how the brand faded out of people's memory and wrapped up so silently.
Another example I can think of is Gwen's LAMB. Gosh her solo album of the same name was a multiple Grammy-nominated blockbuster. And we all know how many times she talked about that in her first two albums.

Mid-00s fashion was tragic + no social media at the time = flop??
Then again Jessica Simpson of all celebs allegedly has a huge fashion brand but I think her line is more casual, everyday, soccer mom style whereas Bey's and Gwen's were maybe a bit more expensive given their inarguably better taste?

Jessica's stuff is geared towards teens fashion forward women in their 20s and 30s. But a lot of her items have broad appeal. She has home items for the bedroom like bedding and carpets for other rooms. House Of Dereon was such a hot mess. I remember seeing tons of it at TJ Maxx and Ross. LAMB was meant to be more high end but some of the items were really WTF. The Harjajuku stuff was cute. Betsy Johnson does that brand of whimsical and ironic fashion better.

Eminem's Shady Ltd. and Jay-Z's Roc A Wear both did pretty well when they came out and I remember seeing those items for sale for a while but then I began seeing them deeply discounted and then that was it. The items were really boring.
I remember when Puff Daddy's Sean John was the big brand to buy when I was in high school. I loved the jeans and t-shirts. Eventually the designs began to get boring and the Macy's stores I used to buy it from stopped having it and I went in a more upscale high fashion direction. And I was fucking sexy back them so I was not going to cover up hot buff body with big baggy clothing.
Madonna had the short lived Truth Or Dare clothing and shoe line. This is different from her and her daughter's Material Girl line which still exists. Most of the TOD stuff was lingerie and pornstar and stripper shoes. I think it was meant to be for a limited time only as it was only around for maybe less than a year.
Carlos Santana has a line of shoe ps and handbags. The women's stuff has done well but the men's shoes have struggled to sell as they are really high end and they are good quality, but at those prices, men will be more likely to bug Hugo Boss, Cole Haan, Allen Edmonds, and Louboutins because at least those brands are known for their quality.
The Kardashians did a line of clothing and home stuff for Sears and that did well initially but the quality was so bad.
Thalia's clothing, shoes, and jewelry has done better but it looks like Macy's is ordering less.

Yes Disco🌶️📖 expert of retails! Thanks for giving these insights. The last celebrity brand that I was tempted to support is Rita Ora's Roara Republic. I was really thinking of buying her black sweatshirt --> But it got sold out quickly and I don't know why she didn't produce more. Now the whole store is back to selling almost exclusively her tour merch

definitely not katy perry's iconic shoe line Are they really selling?? I couldn't imagine who are the target customers even. It's a real niche market because of how out there and specific many of the designs are. There would be some overlap with the Betsy customer but she is going after a more upscale clientele. I think some people who shop at Hot Topic or Urban Outfitters might buy some of that stuff. I think it's more Halloween or tragic clown stripper oriented. I think Katy's designs are creative and inventive because there really isn't anyone else doing those types of designs to that extreme or extent. I think they are still trying to find their wasps and it might take a few seasons to find that target spot of the designs being creative without looking garish and weird.

I wonder if Selena's fashion company would have become a bigger thing had she not died. She had two boutique in Texas and after it's initial success, she had plans to expand it through Latin America. Even though her brand as an artist kept incredibly strong after her passing, it was obvious that her fashion business would make no sense anymore without her as a creative mind behind it.

House of Dereon bombed because Ms. Knowles was never (and still isn't) a fashion girl. She doesn't have a distinctive style.
Diddy and Russell really lead the pack.
J.Lo was a thing until she tried to make it a luxury brand by becoming sweetface.

There were a bunch of scandals about Ivy Park that broke out in 2018, a year after its initial launch. She's cut ties with Topshop and partnering with Adidas to relaunch the brand next month. Let's hope she gets it right this time, because Adidas sounds promising.

Does anyone remember Eve's Fetish brand? Launched in 2003 but closed after three or four years because of production issues and disagreements over the designs. She tried again in 2008 and shut down even more quickly. A third attempt was planned for 2009, but never materialized. One of my friends was a huge fan and bought one of the purses the first time Fetish launched, but I don't really recall anyone else really talking about it.
Sean John is not 'cool' to mention now, but it's still being sold through Macy's (online, may or may not be in all stores), which lets it hold its status as a respectably midlevel department store brand and not fall in the dreaded Citi Trends grave where so many other technically-not-dead-but-might-as-well-be urbanwear lines eventually find themselves. I think urbanwear is an especially hard struggle because that type of consumer is not normally here for much in the way of color or patterns, which doesn't leave a would-be designer with a lot of room for creativity or bringing something new to the market.
The problem with those '90s/'00s celebrity lines is that they were too reliant on the celebrity's star power. Even the more successful ones like Rocawear (idk why but it always surprises me when I remember this still exists) and Apple Bottoms (once Nelly's commercial relevancy ended, so did the jeans) fell out of the spotlight as people moved on from them the same way we move on from an old album after five singles. The celebrity's name is a strong initial draw, but at some point the line has to be able to sell itself, and if it's not doing that by year five it's not going to last much longer - assuming it even reached that five year mark in the first place.
IMO Jessica's line has done decently because despite having her name on it, I don't think anyone really associates her line that closely with her as a celebrity. It's just another midrange department store line that fits in well with all the other midrange department store lines.

That was the first brand that came to mind; I remember the purses vividly but I feel like Eve was the only one who actually wore any of the clothing.

I remember Fetish also. I think it was a bit ahead of its time.
Marc Anthony's line for Kohl's is still around. I bought a few pieces a few years ago and they are still with me.
Justin Timberlake (and Trace Ayala) had a clothing line called William Rast. It was initially a boutique brand then they did a line for JCPenney and then went away and came back and had a line through Macy's and then they still sell directly. I don't think they have promoted it that much in recent years so it's just there. I own one of their faux leather biker jackets and it's awesome.
