#22 The Districts - Cheap Regrets
Chosen By: peacebone Points: 388 SD: 9.127171695 (7TH LOWEST)
Thoughts from the Hosts Red: At first, I thought that this was fine, but it didn't really leave much of an impression on me. It's decent indie rock fare. After listening to it again, I liked it more than I did initially, and I'm probably underranking it now. shazam: The Districts have been producing solid ass hits throughout this tournament. i think i like this one a bit more than their last offering, too, really nice discovery

#21 Post Animal - In a Paradise
Chosen By: Lordef†ones Points: 388 SD: 10.91787525
Thoughts from the Hosts Red: This goes heavier than I was expecting. It almost feels like a more psychedelic Black Sabbath. Between this and "Salvation Hurts", perhaps my expectations of what rock Pulse is into are a little more off than I thought. shazam: this was robbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbed. i don't think i've heard Post Animal before, but they sure caught my ear with this. if you're gonna play some Sabbath/stoner/doom throwback, you bet i'm gonna love it. also this is my first top 10 loss :(

Okay let me go back and comment on all these.
40: Prisoner- Guess this isn't a surprising last place, but I thought it was a pretty great first listen. Maybe surprisingly, I don't think I've ever heard a DGD song before? This was a nice enough introduction though, the chorus is strong, obviously would be up my alley.
39: Running Red Lights- Ehh this didn't really impress me, but I've never been a huge Avalanches fan anyway.
38: Dreamland- Pleasant enough Glass Animals song, very smooth and nice to listen to, doesn't stand out too much, but nice background music.
37: Enda- Huh, really surprised this finished so low honestly?? I was kinda surprised this song came out only last year honestly, I feel like I've been listening to it for so much longer. But I do enjoy it a lot, the build is indeed very strong.
36: 45 (A Matter of Time)- Blehh this kinda just feels like Sum 41 on autopilot, but the melody isn't as good as other songs of theirs in this style.
35: Home Economic- Hmm idk, like I did kind of enjoy this the first time around, it's fun and quirky enough, but the more I came back to it the more I thought it was just annoying. Still a cool little song though.
34: Vowels (And the Importance of Being Me)- This is...from 2016. Which I guess I'd forgive more if I like *loved* the song, but this was just kinda weak to me, the tune was nice but I didn't really like the vocals.
33: Cold Hard Kiss- This song is dope, love the aesthetic of it. Endless Heights haven't released a song since this one last August, but I would like to hear some more stuff from them, I always mean to check out their back catalog but haven't.
32: Momentary Bliss- Blehh this is for sure a cool collaboration of artists that I wish I liked more than I did, but it just doesn't come together for me at all. Think Slaves peaked at Cheer Up London for me, I otherwise find their vocals kinda unappealing.
31: Vacation Forever- Oh yeah Violent Soho. They drop a new song every few years that I end up liking. Can't say I like this one as much as Viceroy from 2016, but they make pretty consistent alt rock.
30: Reckless Paradise- Really dug this Billy Talent first few times I heard it, but it wore on me a bit. Still liked it enough to take it top 40 on my chart, but it's no Afraid of Heights.
29: Persona Non Grata- I like this enough. I've come back to it a few times since. It's uhh nothing super incredible, but it's likable.
28: The Title Track- Aww I quite liked this one. Knew this was an AI pick immediately, definitely one of my favorite discoveries from this set. Has a nice energy to it, really like the last stretch.
27: Blank Slate- HMLTD's new album is one of my favorites of the year, but this just isn't one of the more memorable tracks from it. Still a solid song, but a weaker track.
26: She's a Big Boy- It's...fine. Don't really remember it, but it's a fine enough song.
25: Salvation Hurts- Hmm like, I feel like this is a song I should *really* like, but every time I came back to listen to it I couldn't really find it more than moderately pleasant. It still has a something to it that I like, but it doesn't click *all* the way, should listen to some of this act's other works.
24: Everything Has Changed- I like it! I mean, I think this is one of my most listened to songs on this list. I don't think I've ever like loved it loved it, but it's a good piece of alt rock, very late 90s-y. Think I prefer Different Light still
23: If Loving You Is Wrong- Like...I dig AAL, though I do like their first project significantly more. This is still a solid song (but why is it in a rock tournament).
22: Cheap Regrets- I've really enjoyed both of the Districts songs that have been in this tournament! Should give their album a listen. Think I like this one even more than Hey Jo.
21: In a Paradise- Hmmm think I underranked this one a bit. I've heard Post Animal songs I like *more* than this one, I think the chorus on this one is a little offputting kinda just sounds like...a weak Ghost track. But I still appreciate it I guess, instrumental is good, could bump it up a couple positions.

#30. Billy Talent - Reckless Paradise This was one of the clear standouts for the harder guitar oriented songs here. The vocals were the stand out. Very unique. The style a bit like Coheed and Cambria but with different tones. The song carries itself fine with it's melody. Question? Why didn't I rank this higher? because my top 20 was hard as F U C K to rank.
#29. Bright Eyes - Persona Non Grata Didn't find much use for this song. The music was fine for a slow mellow vibe, but the vocals were not for me to embrace.
#28. Origami Angel - The Title Track parts of me really liked the melody and vocals, but also some parts sounded like they went off tune on purpose, and It throws me off my music radar. It's most likely the proggy part the hosts are mentioning that didn't work for me? Not a bad rocker tho.
#27. HMLTD - Blank Slate I wanted to like this more. The glammy vibe and moog were my favorite aspects. The vocals were ok. Surprisingly the other synths didn't work for me.
#26. Mcbaise - She's a Big Boy We are now going backwards in the way I ranked songs. This one had some funky elements. The part I liked had no vocals, and that was really dissapointing, because it felt like the most upbeat part of the song. Was the song about a Tomboy? idk, but it was basically one big verse that needed some chorus action.
#25. MXMS - Salvation Hurts One of my favorite first time listens that by 4rth listen had climbed from my #17 to my top 10. She sounds ok in the verses, but I Love ,Love, Love, her vocals in the chorus. maybe the synths add more layers to her tones, but it works. There are actually two great vibes in this song. One 80's Depeche Mode and ,one with today's popppy Retrowave. The strong big 80's percussion wraps it all up nicely. Definitely gonna check more music from this chick.
#24. Best Coast - Everything Has Changed I was always gonna rank this one high. If there is song song that brings back that great 90's Weezer vibe its this song. Also a song I charted this year.
#23. Against All Logic - If Loving You Is Wrong First this gave me Gorillaz vibes. Which is usually if not practically always not a good thing. Second. Not much going on vocally. Too much effects, and it's basically just sounds. I don't mind instrumentals, but this song doesn't include any instruments I like.
#22. The Districts - Cheap Regrets This was pretty good. Carries itself nicely with the melody. It's the really good song that misses my top 20. Kinda sounds like a Strokes meets the Killers which isn't really that hard to do, but it still hurt to keep it out of my top 20.
#21. Post Animal - In a Paradise YES!!!!!!! The Black Sabbath vibe is exactly what I got too. If this had been actually Ozzy I might have had a different #1 song, but I already gave #1 action to that awesome Slift jam so, and I also was in a different mood. I thought the rest of you would easily put this one in the top 10, so I decided to help out songs I thought needed my help. Now I regret not keeping this one in my top 10.

#20 Sputnik Sweetheart - Growing Pains
Chosen By: Beno Points: 390 SD: 8.611497822 (5TH LOWEST)
Thoughts from the Hosts Red: I wonder who submitted this. Seriously, though, this actually does some interesting things with its instrumentation, especially with the guitar. This seed progressively kept getting better and better, which puts this song lower than I would have wanted it to be. Out of every song that I ranked kind of low, though, this is the one I expect will grow on me the most. shazam: this was really cute! i really liked how it sounded sonically too, glad this was able to sneak into the top 20

#19 Chance デラソウル - Summer
Chosen By: willapted33 Points: 393 SD: 13.65081451 (HIGHEST)
Thoughts from the Hosts Red: What even is this song? And can I have more? It is also not lost on me that this song was included in exactly the correct RMD at the exact right time. This makes me want to seek out the album this is on. (I swear, though, I didn't include the whole album because I wanted to be reminded to listen to it. It's the only YT clip of it I could find.) shazam: this was one of the coolest songs i've found all tournament. never thought i'd see future funk being posted on pulse, but here we are! this track just radiates warmth and bliss, really awesome first listen

#18 Mopac - Cross-Eyed Dreaming
Chosen By: Doc Indie Party Rock Points: 400 SD: 8.932495378 (6TH LOWEST)
Thoughts from the Hosts Red: This song almost takes me out of the mindset that we're in a hellscape that there's no escape from. Almost. shazam: i loved the guitar tones on this track! a lot of this reminds me of 80s indie acts in a way, some Jesus and Mary Chain vibes are definitely present here. this was just a super cool first listen

Thoughts from the Hosts Red: I can't be the only one who heard "The Hand That Feeds" at times, right? I must stress "at times", because this song is way more than that. This is a catchy and lively as hell song. shazam: this one took a bit for me to warm up to, i gotta admit. i liked what it was going for with the krautrock-infused beat, but i only felt like i really got it after a couple more listens. maybe i'll like it even more with more listens!

Just take my songs out of the #1 seed rankdown. It clearly won't make a difference if they're there or not at this point.

#16 TR/ST - Unbleached
Chosen By: @humanshazam Points: 431 SD: 12.15026532 (6TH HIGHEST)
Thoughts from the Hosts Red: Oh damn, EBM TR/ST! "Rescue, Mister" will always be my favorite TR/ST song, and it heavily embraces EBM. Even though I don't like "Unbleached" as much, that's a large hill to climb, and this song doesn't try to just be "Rescue, Mister" all over again, going more darkwave with the sound, and it works very well. shazam: wow, i bet none of you expected me to pick TR/ST! jokes aside TR/ST is one of my favorite musical discoveries of the past year. i really like this track because of the futuristic feel, while it also has the cool EBM-inspired throwback sound. if any of you liked this or "Sulk" from the last tournament i would highly recommend you check out more of his stuff!

#15 Nothing But Thieves - Is Everybody Going Crazy?
Chosen By: MoD Points: 441 SD: 9.811244891
Thoughts from the Hosts Red: Okay, put aside the allegations brought forth against NBT not too long ago. Even with that in mind, "Is Everybody Going Crazy" just isn't one of my favorite NBT songs. It's basically "Forever & Ever More", but lesser. It's still good, because it's Nothing But Thieves, but this is b-tier NBT. shazam: ...yeah i knew i'd be alone here. i do like some NBT (Wake Up Call is killer) but this kinda just felt like them phoning it in, it kinda lacked any of the personality their older material had

#14 Mannequin Pussy - Drunk II
Chosen By: peacebone Points: 443 SD: 9.166730462 (8TH LOWEST)
Thoughts from the Hosts Red: Well, that was definitely not what I was expecting a song by a band called Mannequin Pussy to sound like. Now that's a NAME. This was a really nice little indie rock song. shazam: this was awesome, wasn't sure what to expect from the band name but this was a really nice jam! i could definitely hear a lot of Sleater-Kinney influence, and as someone who isn't a big fan of that group, i thought this was really nicely done

#13 Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes - Angel Wings
Chosen By: janinho Points: 451 SD: 11.09990517
Thoughts from the Hosts Red: This will probably be my most surprising ranking, but this just isn't the Rattlesnakes that I fell for a few years ago. I can totally see the appeal of a slower, broodier Frank Carter and the Rattlesnakes, but when my first experience with the band was "Lullaby", which was then followed by "Snake Eyes" and "Modern Ruin", which was *then* followed by experiencing Frank's other band, this just doesn't have the same allure to me. I do want to revisit it. Maybe I'm wrong. shazam: ooo, this was one of my favorite discoveries, easily. i'm a sucker for a good crescendo, and this track sure does deliver a hell of a crescendo. admittedly not familiar with this group very much, but this track makes me wnt to explore their material.

#12 Squid - The Cleaner
Chosen By: @bobpatience Points: 457 SD: 11.05619617
Thoughts from the Hosts Red: What is it about this band that ensnares me so much? I think it's just how energetic Squid feels every time I listen to them, like they're putting everything they can into every song that they make, and that's especially clear on their song in seed 1. "The Cleaner" is really good too, though, and I need an album from these guys, badly. shazam: now THIS was my highest first listen. it was like a hybrid between DEVO and Talking Heads set in the 21st century, weird but it had such a killer groove. i definitely want to return to this one more, and i wish it could've finished top 10

Thoughts from the Hosts Red: Something about this song just grabbed me from the first moment, and it's really hard to describe, but it's like I was ascending to another plane of existence while listening. This is just a stunning song, in every sense of the word, and I contemplated pushing this into my top four very briefly. Once you see what's in my top four, you'll understand why that's a big deal. shazam: fitting that my top 2 first listens would go out back to back, huh? i mean this was just by the books something i was destined to love lmao. fuzzy and noisy, but it maintains a hooky groove while keeping the ethereal atmosphere that i just love in these sorts of songs
