#40 Dance Gavin Dance - Strawberry's Wake
Chosen By: @chroniclea Points: 187 SD: 9.895639656
Thoughts from the Hosts Red: This song frustrates me, especially because the math rock aspect really intrigued me here. I feel like the weaker aspects of DGD (particularly the songwriting) show up in a profound way, though, and it's so frustrating, because this had the potential to be one of DGD's better songs, if not one of their best. shazam: i just don't think Pulse is DGD's site lol. i'll always enjoy this band though, i'm loving Tillian's improvement over the past years in the band

#39 Pleasure Craft f/ Mingija - Work It Out
Chosen By: @chroniclea Points: 229 SD: 10.13838459
Thoughts from the Hosts Red: I have absolutely no idea what to make of this song, but I think I'm into it. shazam: out of a very strong set of songs, this just happened to be my least favorite. i liked what it was going for but i don't think it really nailed it as much as i had hoped

yeah this just confirms my suspicion that my taste and pulse are starting to not really mix and not even in an interesting or hilarious way like some people on this site. these were legit my 2 most listened to songs of the quarantine so far.
honestly it's fine. i don't even go on this site much anymore

#38 Tame Impala - On Track
Chosen By: Lordefâ ones Points: 255 SD: 6.356720439 (3RD LOWEST)
Thoughts from the Hosts Red: This feels like Currents overloaded and lost its way. I feel torn about "Breathe Deeper", but "On Track" feels like a Currents b-side. I guess you could say the same thing about "Patience", but "Patience" SELLS it, whereas this song doesn't really do that. If this was on Currents, barely anyone would talk about it. shazam: i generally like Tame Impala but this is just among the weaker side of their discography. there are some slappers on this album but i just couldn't find something here that made me gravitate back to it

#37 Landon Elliott - Hurricane
Chosen By: wheatsquares33 Points: 269 SD: 10.14357458
Thoughts from the Hosts Red: This hits sufficiently hard, and Landon Elliott's voice is pleasant, but it's not exactly a song that I see myself coming back to very often. Chorus is nice, though. shazam: this kinda reminds me of a James pick? i thought this was nice for sure, but it just ended up settling near the bottom of my list. perhaps it's worth a relisten?

#36 Strung Out - Under the Western Sky
Chosen By: American Idiot Points: 272 SD: 9.702956684
Thoughts from the Hosts Red: I was expecting to be a bit ambivalent to this song, but this song eventually won me over, particularly after the halfway point, I loved the instrumental flourish. shazam: i dug this! melodic hardcore is a cool genre and this was a good pump up. sadly this was in my opinion the most stacked of the four seeds. i enjoyed stuff even this low on my list :/

#35 Agnes Obel - Promise Keeper
Chosen By: @bobpatience Points: 287 SD: 9.900956892
Thoughts from the Hosts Red: Well, this is one very interesting way to start the playlist from the beginning. I feel both relaxed and uncomfortable, which doesn't make any damn sense, but it's how I feel when I listen to this song. Perhaps that's what Agnes intended. This is unsettling and very, very pretty. shazam: i thought this was quite haunting. chamber pop isn't something i'm always into, but i thought this was quite beautiful. really nice tune, definitely one i need to revisit

I don't gravitate that much towards this kind of song in general, but I thought there was something excellent about this one. I think I really liked the more technical aspects of the instrumentation while still being very catchy.
(That was about the Strung Out song lol. The Agnes Obel reveal hurts even more, ouch)

#34 Chastity - Sun Poisoning
Chosen By: lyhom Points: 300 SD: 9.93134326
Thoughts from the Hosts Red: This song is carried by its songwriting and the chorus. Very sad song, but it's one that also hits all too hard on a personal level, too. shazam: i'm pretty positive i underranked this, i really like the guitar work here and the singer's got a unique voice that works with the tone of the song. definitely need to return to this one

#33 Spacey Jane - Good For You
Chosen By: Beno Points: 323 SD: 8.833399536
Thoughts from the Hosts Red: Nice energy and it's definitely pleasant power pop. I don't really have a lot more to add. shazam: this was cute! the vocalist has a nice voice and introduced some really interesting melodic elements. but red voice this was a difficult list

#32 Declan Mckenna - Beautiful Faces
Chosen By: BlurryKyle Points: 323 SD: 10.70796555
Thoughts from the Hosts Red: This is good enough, and this song helps to reinforce the idea that perhaps there's more to Declan McKenna than I thought, but he raised the bar so high with "The Key to Life on Earth", and I don't think this one gets there. shazam: yeah i pretty much echo what Red said. hearing this after "The Key to Life on Earth" was a bit disappointing since i thought that track was super fucking good. but, this was still good! i just definitely have a preference between the two Declan songs haha

#31 Yung Lean - Blue Plastic
Chosen By: Red Points: 338 SD: 12.57357295 (5TH HIGHEST)
Thoughts from the Hosts Red: I didn't think it was possible for me to love a song like this as much as I actually do. I mean, me? Fall madly for a sadboy song? What ultimately separates "Blue Plastic" from other songs of its kind is its production, which hits so forcefully that it makes you notice, whether you want to or not. I get chills every time the beat dissolves and then comes back in a few moments later, as powerful as ever. The combination of the pounding beat, the almost dream-like synths, and the vocal effects that make Yung Lean sound almost like he's speaking at us from all directions creates a song that is utterly hypnotic, immersive, and heartbreaking. If every sadboy song was capable of simultaneously tugging at my heart strings and ensnaring me with its powerful production like "Blue Plastic", sadboy songs would be my favorite songs. shazam: ugggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh ok enough of that this song is absolutely incredible, i was already a fan of Lean but this track just wowed me. he went cold, arctic synthpop on this track and the result is simply entrancing. this was part of the soundtrack to this past winter for me. the synth tones on here are just so hard hitting, man, it's just icy and emotional

40: Strawberry's Wake- Yeah I didn't like this nearly as much as Prisoner. It was okay enough, but definitely not something I'd see myself coming back to. Still, kinda like the style I'm hearing on this track and it had some nice grooves in it, not too bad, just kinda...there.
39: Work It Out- I guess I can see what this was going for, but it's just...annoying
38: On Track- Huh. Thought y'all liked Tame Impala?? Granted this isn't the most memorable song I've heard from The Slow Rush but like, it's fine, did not see a #38 placement coming.
37: Hurricane- Yeah I guess this song was a little too...straightforward and simple and not by a big artist to do too well here, but I still kinda thought it would place a bit higher. I really like this track, it may be my most listened to song in 2020 so far actually, very good night driving music. The verses are where it really hits the mark for me. It's kinda simplistic on the lyrical side but in a way I kinda find charming.
36: Under the Western Sky- I mean, I'm always on board with Strung Out, but they have way better songs than this one.
35: Promise Keeper- I actually really liked this at first, it has a strong atmosphere and it's very pretty for sure, but it kinda stalled for me after a point, just felt like it kept building without actually going anywhere, and I came out of it kinda unsatisfied.
34: Sun Poisoning- Fwehhhh what are y'all doing? I'm more hurt about this getting out in the bottom 10 than my own song honestly. Just a really solid emo song here, I charted it very well late last year/early this one. I have yet to hear anything else from Chastity that has come close though, honestly, it seems this isn't really a style they follow through with very consistently on their new album. Which is a decent listen, but...this is still their best song.
33: Good for You- I liked this a lot more than I expected to? Like, it kinda just sounds like something that would show up in my discover weekly and I'd be like yeah, that was fine, whatever. But it's really catchy, I like the chorus a lot. Decent track, one I've come back to a few times.
32: Beautiful Faces- Can't say I'm unsurprised this finished lower than Key to Life on Earth (iirc), but after coming back to both a good handful of times, I can say with confidence I like this one a lot more.
31: Blue Plastic- Huh, can't say I was expecting this one to have so many top 15s? I guess I'm okay with it, I've heard Yung Lean songs I like more than this one for sure, I just think it's a little bland

I saw Spacey Jane live before covid came and they were so f**king good, the audience was just screaming the chorus of âGood For Youâ right back at the band word for word. If you enjoyed Good For You Iâd absolutely recommend listening to their other stuff, theyâre a really solid group

#40. Dance Gavin Dance - Strawberry's WakeI gotta say #40 seems uncalled for. I don't have to many issues with this guy other than I wish he would make up his mind and stay in one music zone. The first 35 seconds are the worst part of the song, but after it picks up I can't deny that I enjoyed it. I prefer his louder vocals anyway. I guess that math rock melody makes it kinda cool too. Surely better than the last one we ranked. This is probably the last time we will see songs from this guy on these games unless #40 is what they aiming for? #39 . Pleasure Craft f/ Mingija - Work It OutThat's crazy that my rank is the second highest to @chroniclea . I probably liked what everyone elese didn't. The quircky new wav-ish vocals. Even the band name looks like 80's New Wave. I thought somebody would at least like the NIN sort of melody of the song? I really liked those female backups and the percussion the best, because it gave the song some faster BPM's. #38. Tame Impala - On TrackAside from the two songs from 'Lonerism" i Can't say this band ever did much for me. I'm also kinda over this Indiepop style for good. A song can be aesthetic, but must also be really uptempo and have 80's retro vibes to keep me interested. This song failed on all counts. #37. Landon Elliott - Hurricane This sounds like a AAA wet dream song, which really confuses me when I see certain names at the bottom of the ranks. Anyway, I found the guys vocals rather pleasant with a sort of 70's guitar magic in the solo. The chorus was really catchy too. This kinda sounds like something you could find on the 1981 charts. Which finally explains the bottom ranks. #36. Strung Out - Under the Western Sky This one was really cool and I knew exactly who submitted it too. I got a nice Social Distortion vibe in the guitars, and Kept coming back to it whenever I would open my work in progress and went from #21 to #12 once I had heard all the songs. #35. Agnes Obel - Promise Keeper I couldn't make heads or tailz of this song. felt like something off a Narnia soundtrack, but also could be a Nordic piano ballad. The lack of melody didn't help me much in the end. It's basically like two notes on a piano. The part in the middle which sounds like a Enya song pushed it up my list a few notches, but that's about all I could do with it. #34. Chastity - Sun PoisoningThis is the song I finally decided to use as the anchor for my top 20. It had the right amount of Emo vibe for me to sway to. #33. Spacey Jane - Good For YouI thought the Strokes vibe would push this one into the top 20? It certainly helped me. The intro was such a hook, but the real star was that bassline. What a bop. #32. Declan Mckenna - Beautiful Facesdamn! My first top 10 loss. I also put "The Key To Life On earth" in my top 10. This will probably turn out to be one of those "i regret not charting songs of 2020". I always forget how much I dig this guy's vocals. Also this one hell of a psychedelic bop. Note to myself. Start charting "The Key To Life On Earth". #31. Yung Lean - Blue PlasticI guess what tuned me out the most was the modern sounding vocal tones. Another turn off, but I think was the whole purpose of the song was that I just didn't hear any sort of chorus or pre chorus, or anything other than the same percussion beats all the way through. I'm sure there is a song in there somewhere, but it didn't sing to me.
