Thoughts from the Hosts Red: Well, the last time that I thought a song sounded like it was right up this group of posters' alley, it did not do particularly well, but this one made the top half, so I'm a little more vindicated here. It does not surprise me in the slightest that it was submitted for this game. shazam: well i could immediately tell this was a Doc pick haha. i dug the 80s throwback style here, very retro and something i could easily get behind

This was the most obvious Doc pick out there lol
I liked it quite a bit. Cool modern take on a retro sound.

#18 Fiona Apple - Under the Table
Chosen By: willapted33 Points: 399 SD: 13.10474 (2ND HIGHEST)
Thoughts from the Hosts Red: This song isn't as immediate sounding as "Shameika", but I'd argue that it hits harder on a songwriting level. These are the kind of songs that made me fall in love with Fiona, and it's absolutely needed, now more than ever, in this piece of garbage of a year. shazam: ...yeah i just don't think i'll ever get into FTBC as much as the rest of you guys. it's certainly pretty good, but tracks like this i more appreciate than want to sit down and listen to. at least the right one is higher?

Thoughts from the Hosts Red: The first thing to come to mind when I listened to "Sludge" for the first time was "LCD Soundsystem, with a twinge of The Rapture". I think that's not really touching the surface with "Sludge", though. It's also got twinges of black midi in it, and the package these parts creates is...something. I know that I love it, though. shazam: i think this band is easily one of my favorite discoveries from the tournament. i love their wacky and manic take on post-punk in the vein of bands like Devo or Talking Heads. i think i even liked this one more than The Cleaner, but both were excellent

#16 Foals - Wash Off
Chosen By: Lordef†ones Points: 424 SD: 9.676885101
Thoughts from the Hosts Red: Full of energy, probably the most energetic song I've heard from Foals from this era, but I'm struggling to connect to the song overall. It's definitely well-performed, but I can't shake the feeling that Foals have made better songs than this. shazam: i actually thought this was one of Foals' best since "What Went Down", i really dug the guitarwork here and the mini explosion near the end of the track

#15 Beach Bunny - Colorblind
Chosen By: janinho Points: 428 SD: 9.201830482
Thoughts from the Hosts Red: lol, imagine listening to the Spotify playlist from top to bottom, and going from "Promise Keeper" to "Void" to this. What the hell...this would be fairly standard indie pop if not for the guitar work, which really carries this song to another level. shazam: i feel really bad for putting Beach Bunny low when they first appeared in RMD, because now i've been vibing with them super hard. this track is just some top notch bittersweet emo-tinged alt rock

Thoughts from the Hosts Red: Tame Impala's biggest weakness overall is one that can be a strength, too: Its repetitiveness. "Breathe Deeper" has moments where I feel like it's a little too repetitive. The thing is, though, that there's also moments of pure brilliance, particularly in that fakeout ending and the last minute. I'm really torn on this song, but I was also really torn about "Let It Happen' at first, too. shazam: well i'm glad we could (mostly) agree this was the better Tame Impala track here. for me personally, i really dug the tropical, balearic beat infusion near the end, it almost sounded like vaporwave in a way. i haven't been crazy about this album of Tame Impala's, but this was definitely really good

#13 King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - Mars for the Rich
Chosen By: Geometrical Points: 465 SD: 10.5972936
Thoughts from the Hosts Red: Infest the Rats' Nest is a lot of fun, though "Mars for the Rich" isn't one of my absolute favorites on the album. "Organ Farmer" really needs more of a spotlight, for example. "Mars for the Rich" is more restrained than the other songs that have been showcased from the album, but it's a nice change of pace from the blazing "Planet B" and "Self-Immolate". shazam: man King Gizz are such a kickass band, i just love how easily they can shift styles but still sound so good. i don't think this is quite Planet B, but damn if it isn't real close. they need to keep trying out this heavy sound, it works quite well for them. also love the lyrics

#12 Moaning - Ego
Chosen By: lyhom Points: 469 SD: 9.902019996
Thoughts from the Hosts Red: I really wanted to seek out more Moaning after falling madly for "Tired", but, as always, my mind got sidetracked to other things. This is definitely more up-tempo than "Tired" and it feels shoegazey, but I think that "Ego" works very well in its own right. It wouldn't surprise me if I become obsessed with this song within a month or so. shazam: Moaning are such a good band yo, they just have this cool blend of shoegaze and alt rock where it's super dreamy but still quite catchy. this was my #1 in AI's rankdown, so of course it's in my top 10 here

#11 Drab Majesty - Long Division
Chosen By: American Idiot Points: 488 SD: 7.694153625 (5TH LOWEST)
Thoughts from the Hosts Red: This is very, VERY shoegazey at times, it sounds like it would have fit in perfectly in the early 90's. In fact, I thought of Cocteau Twins immediately. I'm starting to think that this Drab Majesty band might be good. shazam: you know this bands is great when this is my least favorite out of their tracks here. this is still really damn good, Drab Majesty have easily been one of my favorite discoveries this year. they just hit my goth/darkwave niche perfectly. hell, maybe with more listens i'd even end up putting this one top 10

Great top 10. I completely forgot to do this seed when I wanted to. "Cars in Space" would have been my #1 (and a top seed for me if I sent songs), so I'm rooting for it to go all the way.

in this top 10 there’s a song by an acclaimed artist who I bought the hype for originally, but am coming to think of as way not all that
while there’s another artist I’ve resisted for quite awhile until this rankdown when something finally clicked with me
and there’s a 3rd song that I submitted
and 2 more that I didn’t care for
the other 5 are all really good

#20 Richard Dawson - JoggingThe vibe of the last reveals has been so great I completely forgot about these vocally challenged tank swimmers. The song itself was rather good, but these vocals were rank. This guy couldn't sing his way into campfire jamboree. What's that flat head guy's name from American idol that would argue with Demi Lovato all season? He would buzz this guy right off the stage. Also I'm just wondering? Is this Richard Dawson Jr. or did they actually name themselves after an iconic game show host? #19. Vandal Moon - DeadYou could even tell by the vid's thumbnail this was mine. Hell yeah! Made the top 20. 80's New wave forever. Now I can start charting it next week. 'nuff said. #18. Fiona Apple - Under the TableI know you guys are digging this chick's album, but this was one of the most obvious songs I would tank out there. The pianos provide the melody here. That's not the issue. I just don't like the way the melody falls into place. In my defense I've never been big on Fiona Apple's coffee house music vibe. #17. Squid - SludgeThe best aspects of this songs are the ones that stand out immediately. The Talking Heads/Devo quirkyness in vocal delivery. It just didn't have the sure fire catchiness of a Devo or Talking Heads "hit" would have. The word "hit" being the key word. #16. Foals - Wash OffThis isn't a band I would expect to see get bottom tank ranks and they got some. It's not the strongest Foals songs I heard, but it does hit the uptempo bottoms I like. The issue with me is that the NRG didn't shock me like I wanted it to. The connection was not giving the right watts. The whole Wash it off ,and oooohs ooohs didn't feel too Foal-ish at all. I still enjoyed it tho, but not for my top 20 songs. #15. Beach Bunny - ColorblindMost of these were First time listens, but some fell into my top 10 almost on first listen. Felt like Paramore met Bleached and had a pajama party at Stand Atlantic's house. I could have sworn it was sent in by wheatsquares33 . It has the that vibe of one of those NRGgetic female sung songs on his chart that would soon cruise over to my chart. What a song. #14. T ame Impala - Breathe DeeperSlightly better than the the other Tame Impala song. Not a bad melody, but gets stuck on that "can't belive me" part a bit too long. The music is the most interesting part. There is a lot of instrumental magic, but I'm kinda done with the whole male indie voice effect. At least for the time being. #13. King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard - Mars for the Richman I wanted this one to go top 10 so much. Amazing Space rock vibe sung by guys who sound like Lordie. HAHA! That's a good thing for me. King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard is a hell of a band name too. This is another one of those song that I viewed in the live youtube version, which I bet sounds even better than the studio version. Just like that SLIFT song. #12. Moaning - EgoMore of that 80's New wave vibe that is gonna rank itself in my top 10. Loved the retro Darkwave vibe and his 80's new wave tones. Not all their songs go this strong with the melodic vibe, but I'm glad I was tuned in to this particular song cuz it makes perfect coordination with the bass and synths. #11. Drab Majesty - Long DivisionI'm glad this is the one out first. Its a great song no doubt about that, but it's also the one that was less ear catchy to me. It does have a shoegaze vibe, but I wish the chorus had peaked on a different note.
