#10 Protomartyr - Processed By The Boys
Chosen By: MoD Points: 517 SD: 12.79093017 (4TH HIGHEST)
Thoughts from the Hosts Red: I really hate when I can't find the words to describe why I love a song as much as I do, and it especially frustrates me with this song. "Processed by the Boys" is forceful, but it's not completely in your face about it. It's more of a sarcastic, pessimistic force, like it's angry, but in a nihilistic sort of way. And yet, it sounds immediate at the same time, a song that was needed at a time where we're desperate for it, Okay, maybe I did find a few words. I adore this song. When that sax comes in, oh my god. Perfect. shazam: i have a weird story with this one. i loved it at first, then it grew off of me slightly, and now i'm back to loving it. something about the saxophone just hits so hard in this track. also, i still don't believe Protomartyr are from Michigan, how are they not born and raised Brits?

#9 Soccer Mommy - CIrcle the Drain
Chosen By: Daryl the Beryl Points: 527 SD: 7.855772266 (6TH LOWEST)
Thoughts from the Hosts Red: It always grabs my attention when someone who didn't really get to experience the 90's understands the sensibilities of the era so well. This is basically what Liz Phair would sound like in 2020 if she wasn't a shell of her former self. shazam: this is sadly what i'd consider the weak spot in this top 10. i think it's certainly catchy and pleasant, and Soccer Mommy is really talented, but i'd just rather listen to "Your Dog" than this. not that it's bad at all, just ended up being my least favorite in the top 10 :/

#8 Fiona Apple - Shameika
Chosen By: Daryl the Beryl Points: 527 SD: 12.9300751 (3RD HIGHEST)
Thoughts from the Hosts Red: The dirty secret that I have when it comes to listening to music right now is that I have not listened to a single 2020 album. That means I haven't heard Fetch the Bolt Cutters. Hell, this song was my first experience listening to *any* song from the record. This is very, very jazz driven, and I am just completely over the moon with the instrumentation being offered here. This song is overwhelming. shazam: unlike Under the Table, i can at least get behind this one a good bit. i dig the uncommon time signatures here, and the piano hits super hard. sadly i just don't think this album will click with me like the rest of you

#7 Yves Tumor - Kerosene!
Chosen By: MoD Points: 546 SD: 11.32347352
Thoughts from the Hosts Red: Ugh, I wish I had just said "screw it" and decided to include "Gospel for a New Century" as one of my eight, especially now, where I would say that it likely would have been in my top two even in this stacked seed. That's to take nothing away from "Kerosene!", though, which is also great as a more overtly psychedelic compliment to the slightly demented take on the genre that "Gospel for a New Century' feels like. "Kerosene!" is more downbeat, reserved, and it feels like it could have fit in at any period of time after the 60s and still work. In other words, this is timeless. shazam: mmm this track grew on me so hard because of this tournament. that little break before the wailing guitar comes in just gives me chills, man. it's sensual, erotic, psychedelic and an all around killer tune. definitely cool to hear this sound from Yves Tumor and i'm stoked it made top 10!

Thoughts from the Hosts Red: I both love and hate that this is in this series. I hate it, because everyone knows the song, here, throughout Pulse, or anywhere in the world, really. On the other hand, I love it, because why should there be limits to what people enjoy and want to include? If someone wants to include one of the biggest hits of the last year decade in this competition, why shouldn't they? If someone wants to include a song that isn't "rock" by definition, what's wrong with that? Submit what you like. It also just so happens that "Blinding Lights" is one of the pop highlights of the last couple of years. (I probably should have just called this Alt/Rock Madness, though, seriously. The only reason I didn't is I wouldn't be able to abbreviate it as easily. A/RMD doesn't have the same ring to it.) shazam: i love that this was submitted lol. this is easily one of my favorite pop hits of the year, if not my favorite. it's got this synthpop/synthwave infusion that takes me right back to the 80s despite not being alive during the 80s. it's super anthemic, and it fills me with adrenaline every time i listen to it. definitely one of The Weeknd's best

#5 Drab Majesty - Oxytocin
Chosen By: Geometrical Points: 586 SD: 8.968365456 (9TH LOWEST)
Thoughts from the Hosts Red: Oh man, I feel the goth rock tendencies so much on this particular Drab Majesty song. My goodness. Combine that with more shoegaze tendencies, and this might just be about as good as "Ellipsis". Wow. shazam: i actually almost sent this in, i already confessed my love for Drab Majesty in the "Long Division" post, but man this track is just killer. i love the final minute where you just get immersed in a wall of synths, that's an easy way to my heart when it comes to music. definitely one of the standouts from Modern Mirror

#4 The Beths - Dying to Believe
Chosen By: rowellfarm490 Points: 593 SD: 6.326843397 (2ND LOWEST)
Thoughts from the Hosts Red: Every Beths song I listen to after "Future Me Hates Me" is going to be compared, perhaps unfavorably, to that song. It's a good thing that "Dying to Believe" doesn't really go for the same tempo, going for a faster, livelier tempo that they also thrive in. Something about this band just makes me so happy whenever I listen to them. I'm so glad that they seem to be continuing to impress. shazam: i'm thinking i underranked this a bit. The Beths consistently deliver hard-hitting, bittersweet power pop tunes and this is no exception. i'm stoked to see this end up so high despite my ranking!!

#3 Drab Majesty - Ellipsis
Chosen By: @humanshazam Points: 607 SD: 10.19429665
Thoughts from the Hosts Red: It took a while for me to really get on board with "Ellipsis", but once I did, my goodness. "Dot in the Sky" is probably my favorite discovery of the entire RMD series so far, and it helped me to finally get fully on board with "Ellipsis" once and for all. I say this about so many bands, but it is especially true here: I really, REALLY need to listen to more Drab Majesty songs. shazam: i guess i had to lose a pick eventually? :kii: this is... maybe my song of the year. i could go into so much detail about this track. the synths are lush and heavenly sounding, while the guitar work is just intricate enough to capture my attention and enrapture me. the mixing is incredible, especially near the end where it just erupts into a wall of 80s throwback sounds. and this track is about texting! it gets so deep about such a trivial topic that there's no way i wouldn't love this.

The beautiful thing with music is its ability to subjectively make us feel things; in this case, I can't possibly describe the bliss this song brings me upon every listen, especially the last 2 minutes of it, even after listening to it hundreds and hundreds of times. I won't ramble about this for too long, since of most of y'all probably already know my deep love for this song, but I can safely say this has become one of my favourite songs of all-time...

#2 Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever - Cars in Space
Chosen By: rowellfarm490 Points: 631 SD: 7.61905506 (4TH LOWEST)
Thoughts from the Hosts Red: I have been recommended RBCF a lot lately, and with songs like this and "French Press", it's not hard to see why. While I prefer the majesty of the climax of "French Press", I can't deny that "Cars in Space" is pretty damn good, too. Jangle pop can be massive sounding sometimes, and this song accomplishes that feat with style. shazam: aaaand i almost sent this one too! RBCF are definitely one of my favorite band discoveries of the year, i just adore their epic jangle pop sound that they hit so hard with on every song. this was my gateway, and though i prefer French Press at this point, there's no denying how downright awesome this track is. the last ~1-2 minutes of pure soloing is just music to my ears
#1 Dayglow - Can I Call You Tonight?
Chosen By: @humanshazam Points: 638 SD: 5.937392658 (LOWEST)
Thoughts from the Hosts Red: I have been completely sleeping on Dayglow. This song and "Listerine" are so up my alley that they have prime residence in the alley. I prefer "Listerine" ever so slightly more, but geez, this song is wonderful, too, and I'm listening to it at the perfect time, because this feels as breezy as a summer day should feel. shazam: well i'll be honest, i did not expect this to win! my #1 seeds i reserved for my absolute favorites of 2020, and Can I Call You Tonight? is easily in my top 10 of the year so far. the guitar melodies are so simple but earwormy, providing a dreamy yet hooky melody that keeps me coming back every time. the lyrics just work so well too, they're easy enough to digest that i find myself singing along every time i hear this track. and to top it all off, this was all made by ONE GUY. i'm just super glad you guys agree with me on how good this song is

#10. Protomartyr - Processed By The Boys Jeez this is not a song that makes me feel colorful at all. I forget this was still in here. It was a hard one to process. idk what they were going for? Garage Rock? Alternative Rock, Grunge rival ? It sounds like a bad demo in every sense of the word. Ironically I'm almost positive that is the whole point. Again you either love it or you don't.
#9. Soccer Mommy - CIrcle the Drain This song is alright. Nice melody and all. very 90's, but from the good side of the 90's.
#8. Fiona Apple - Shameika Sorry this melody isn't for me. Sounds like she played a song on the piano. recorded it, played it backwards and used it as her background melody. Once I realized it didn't even go with the tune of her vocals I was done.
#7. Yves Tumor - Kerosene! Was there a chick in this song? Wasn't quite sure but I gave it top 30 just in case. The male vocal was a complete tune out and the music didn't really move me at all. I kinda wish I had gotten that sensual, erotic, and psychedelic vibe that @huamnshazam got. I miss that feeling in new music.
#6. The Weeknd - Blinding Lights You know I do not dig this guys vocals at all when he can't even entice me with an 80's Retro pop vibe that sounds this great. Seriously give this song to practically any other vocalist and it would have made my top 5. End of story.
#5. Drab Majesty - Oxytocin This means my favorite Drab Majesty song I have heard so far could take the crown? I love this one tho. very 80's. Late 80's like gothic modern rock '88 , but would still sound right at home in the 90's. I usually get a bit tired when his songs are too long, so I'm glad he keeps this one at radio friendly length. I also love the Victorian meets goth look of the MV. Kinda wish "Ellipsis" had a better music video.
#4. The Beths - Dying to Believe Great to see one of this uptempo melodic 90's vibe songs make the top 5. I love this one. It musically and vocally has no wrong turns and leads right into melodic fun zone.
#3. Drab Majesty - Ellipsis Favorite yet from this band. Thinking strongly about adding it to my playlist which in turn becomes my HOT LIST and so on. If you listened to Spanish Rock in the 90's then you got that vibe on first listen. Always loved that Bass+Drums driving melody. Its strong and leads the song though 80' 90's and even 2000's. This one has strong El Ultimo Vecino vibes. maybe I'll submit one of their songs in future rank downs.
#2. Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever - Cars in Space Great sounding song. Easy top 20. I need to ask what instrument did they couple up with that awesome guitar hook. The one right after the chorus. It sounds like horns played on synths, though I only see guys on guitars? Also since my first preview I've been returning to this one quite a bit for that hook. I also kinda dig that they all share the vocals.
#1. Dayglow - Can I Call You Tonight? I wasn't expecting this one to end up so high on my own list. Not alone win this entire Rd. The lovelytheband vocal tones are kinda getting played out , but the mellow harmony kinda provided that bliss feeling and go really well with the song. Kinda like early Phoenix with a little honey on the side. Very aesthetic and melodic for one guy. Great winner.

in case you were wondering in this top 10 there’s a song by an acclaimed artist who I bought the hype for originally, but am coming to think of as not all that Soccer Mommywhile there’s another artist I’ve resisted for quite awhile until this rankdown when something finally clicked with me RBCFand there’s a 3rd song that I submitted and 2 more that I didn’t care for the other 5 are all really good a most excellent Top 6! btw, how is it I’m the only one that thinks Oxytocin is BY FAR the best DM song?
