This vaccuum week was so disappointing. I was really expecting the old hits to be gone for good, but radio had to do the Year-End countdowns and bring them all back to life for more undeserved longevity. What's the point of the Christmas Freeze, then? There are so many great new songs unable to reach better peaks like "Nice To Meet Ya", "Adore You", and "Leave Em Alone" due to leftovers from last summer who have long overstayed their welcome. I could understand some exceptions like "Old Town Road" and "bad guy", but who on Earth is still streaming "Sucker" and "Talk", which have peaked ages ago?
I am happy "High Hopes" is back on the Recurrent Charts, though. And Dua Lipa is so close to reaching the top 20 😍
Hopefully things should stabilize next week. We desperately need new blood in 2020.

The person never said that people weren't listening; they said that people aren't able to choose the songs to listen to. Not that I'm harping on you, just quoting this post to continue the conversation, but this is just such a simplistic view that doesn't take in the complexities of what makes something a hit on either radio or streaming. We all need to stray away from that because it's just simply not how it works. Listeners absolutely do have control over what the radio plays, just not directly. A station isn't going to last if they're playing music their listeners don't want to hear. They're constantly using multiple metrics to determine their playlists. Likewise, a label can more easily manipulate a streaming playlist than a radio playlist and the amount of people that listen to a playlist instead of hand picking their songs individually is quite large. So large that we can actually see the data on it and pinpoint playlist movement, addition, and removal just by looking at the daily or weekly streaming stats for a song. Saying you want to remove radio strictly based on the idea that listeners can't pick and choose their songs and giving the single day deals as an example shows complete ignorance to how the music industry pulls similar stunts with streaming and how the act of free will listening on streaming sites isn't exactly 100% free will. The entire industry is a marketing game. There isn't one slice that is solely dictated by the consumers and likely there never will be. I never said or implied that I thought any of those things. In fact I actually think that radio should be counted as much as it is, just that streaming's power should be lifted a tad bit, but that's it. I just simply cleared up what the person was trying to say, which wasn't saying that "no one was listening to this song on the radio." If you want to continue the conversation, quote the person who actually thinks what you disagree with next time.

The Hot 100 Recurrents chart is probably the chart that suffered the most upheaval as only Sunflower and Lucid remained from the previous week. The remainder are all re-entries.

Essentially what happens is songs like Sucker and Talk are placed in many Year-end playlists on places like Spotify and they are streamed from there with the playlist on shuffle. I doubt all of these people suddenly have the idea, "Hey, I'm going to listen to Sucker and Talk today." That's why getting taken off Today's Top Hits or some other big playlists can be crushing for an artist trying to breakthrough. They suddenly miss all of those essentially random streams by people simply going through a playlist.

After all, they are both pretty great songs, and if they suddenly appeared on shuffle I wouldn't mind listening to them. Still, hopefully they are removed in the next few weeks to give the spotlight to new hits, since they already had their time to shine. That's so true. Especially since Today's Top Hits is such a popular playlist, and it is the perfect place for further exposure, particularly for songs and artists outside the usual streaming demographic.

Nice. Billboard appears to be learning from their mistakes with songs like Only Human, Sucker, I Don’t Care, Beautiful People, Talk, Suge, and Baby re-entering
And by “mistakes” I mean the avalanche of Christmas music that bombs the charts for weeks and causes so many songs to go recurrent early. If this does happen again next year, please continue letting recurrent songs re-enter if they were pushed out earlier than they would’ve if it didn’t happen

^Also, the songs that went recurrent re-entering didn't help. Several songs did manage to achieve new peaks or re-peak within the top 40: Memories, The Box, Dance Monkey, Ballin', Don't Start Now, Falling and Hot Girl Bummer, with Suicidal just outside at #41.

The clean slate was actually one of the things I was looking forward to with the Christmas push. I guess they're compromising by making both warring factions unhappy

Why the hell did BB put Yummy under RnB...uuhh Only chart where he'd be guaranteed to be #1? But nah in seriousness, the song has been serviced to urban radio and it definitely has urban influences. His team probably requested that classification.

Interesting that Start wit Me ended the week at #2 on AM and yet it's only #68 on Hot 100 with very moderate gain compared to other songs. Seems to me that AM peaks might be a bit deceiving In terms of Hot 100 success as the true numbers are never available.
Also, doesn't bode well for Yummy's opening week as it's only #7 on AM.

I could understand some exceptions like "Old Town Road" and "bad guy", but who on Earth is still streaming "Sucker" and "Talk", which have peaked ages ago? I am happy "High Hopes" is back on the Recurrent Charts, though. And Dua Lipa is so close to reaching the top 20 😍 Hopefully things should stabilize next week. We desperately need new blood in 2020. New blood you right. Day 8th on new year and still waiting.

Tones & I is #1 in Hot 100 Songwriters. That's quite a big surprise.
