Not sure how this conversation started, but I'm living in the UK and can attest to Mr. Brightside's popularity. The few times I've gone out, be it to a nightclub or a pub, that song somehow always gets played. Interestingly enough, it also peaked at #10 in the UK, same as the US. The fact that it still lingers in the UK charts and makes year-end and decade-end lists speaks volumes of its longevity BUT it further proves the UK charts are kind of a joke. I’m from the U.K; born and bred in East London but have dual U.S citizenship as my Dad is American and from Baltimore, MD. I haven’t heard Mr. Brightside” absolutely anywhere in public, aside from on the radio (Magic FM every so often) since the early 2010’s be it Pubs; Bars; Clubs etc. I’ve probably heard “This is the way to Amarillo” more in public than I’ve heard the former. 💀 I’m not sure who in the British public is downloading it or streaming it but the fact that it’s been so dominant here, chart wise, is hilarious. I live in Coventry, and I've only partied there and in Leicester, and heard that song in both places. People go wild when it plays, and I've heard it performed at karaoke and open mic nights. I've only been in the UK for a year and can safely say that is one of the songs I've heard the most on a night out - in second place we have The Kinks' "Sunny Afternoon" (a UK #1), it seems every single guy who picks up a guitar winds up playing that song. I guess that just speaks to the different perceptions and experiences. We all think differently of a certain song's success or relevancy. I've heard my new UK friends saying that Nickelback's signature song is "Rockstar", not "How You Remind Me", which is mind-blowing to me, but the former did chart higher than the latter. However, they also say "Sk8er Boi" is Avril's, when "Complicated" and "Girlfriend" exist AND charted higher. Again, perception is subjective.

Memories at #2? Woah! Maybe I’m in the minority but I really like the song. I’m not mad about the fact that The Box will block it from hitting the #1 though. The part where he’s all like doo doo do do doo do is good but the rest of the song is ass

Memories climbed to #2 only because of the huge sales boost. The boost is gone now so expect it to drop to maybe #4 next week.

I thought Roxanne was predicted to go #2? What happened? Quite a distance from 2 to 6.
I have yet to hear that song lol. Or "The Box". Have also yet to watch Bieber's video. Boy I'm out of touch.

Arguably, yes. More people remember the Hollaback Girls, Boulevards of Broken Dreams, and Mr. Brightsides than the We Belong Togethers and 1, 2 Steps- they had huge longevity at the time but the ones with outside cultural impact last longer. The same example can be applied to recent years, where a hell of a lot more people know and care about Uptown Funk than Earned It despite both being in the top 10 of 2015 lmao I literally haven't heard Mr. Brightside since the year it peaked and had to cheat with a Google search to remember the band's name. And as much as I loved Gwen, she had a left-of-center vibe that kept all of her hits from being universal crowd pleasers. I am even questioning myself on BOBD because I only ever hear of it, or Green Day at all, from rock fans. But I'm not going to go out of my way to say those songs aren't memorable. It's very easy to dismiss any song if one doesn't care for that genre and doesn't hang around people who do. You just clearly don't like much r&b music - which is fine - but you're naturally going to get pushback when you make it clear that you think almost an entire genre lacks 'longevity' simply because of your own personal taste. Mr. Brightside has its audience, but the weird thing is that it seems to stay young for some reason, I remember hearing it quite a bit in highschool, but outside that, only my little brother plays it (who’s still in highschool) and I genuinely have never heard We Belong Together, partially because of where I grew up, and partially because no one listens to it any more outside of certain radio stations on a rewind hour.

However, the second one is Sk8er Boi so they might have a point there

Memories was discounted on iTunes, while Roxanne was not. Had Roxanne been discounted, it would have been #1 this week.

Mr. Brightside is one of the most fondly remembered and timeless songs released in the 2000's, and I would say it is more widely known now than in 2004. Now We Belong Together on the other hand despite being the biggest song of the 2000's, is pretty forgotten considering the circumstances. Hell I remember all of the big songs from this decade and even I forgot about it. Same with 1, 2 Step

A chart discussion about the current chart devolved into people argueing over which mid-2000s hit was more remembered - Just a normal day on Pulse

'Only' #10 (which fyi is also its US peak) yet it's made 8 UK year-end charts and was the #12 song of the decade just gone. The argument is about longevity and cultural relevance, which in regard to the UK 'Mr Brightside' s**ts on most. :sip2: I didnt mean that it was forgotten in the Uk. What i meant was that in the US its much less remembered and also didnt have nearly as much chart success I'll be honest with you, I'm american and I hear Mr. Brightside all the time. Certainly more than the songs you mentioned earlier

Same with 1, 2 Step 1,2 Step is also one of the most “fondly remembered” songs of the 2000’s, especially in the Urban/Dance circuit. I constantly hear it at clubs and bars where it gets people racing to the dancefloor. As a matter of fact, if memory serves correctly, the D.J played it at least twice last week at the Gay club I was at. “Mr. Brightside” is also ‘timeless’, clearly, except I haven’t heard it in public anywhere in ages which is ironic considering its perennial chart placements. Similar logic applies with every song.

Maroon 5 being mentioned in the same sentence as Rolling Stones is a chart blasphemy of some sort to me ...

Really interesting that AIWFCIY fell off. Dropping off the Hot 100 from #1 is a feat that would have been inconceivable any time before the streaming era. How could a song go from being the most popular in the country to completely off the chart the next week? Obviously it makes sense in 2020 and with that particular song but it's still a cool feat that will likely never be duplicated by a non-holiday single.

The source is.........JANUARY FOOLS!. Nobody expects this three months before April!. But seriously, i do NOT have the actual list he tried copying my ICONIC hot 100 top 10 where sicko mode returned to #1 with "bundles" and a few hours later after being delayed for so long it was revealed old town road went #1 for the first time!
