are we just going to gloss over the fact that the box got an ai of 5.98 on its first day Rhythmic and Urban radio will eat it up. I expect it's second week points at #1 to be a lot higher than its first week points.

If he keeps serving quality like he did on Hollywood's Bleeding, then keep em coming! Ever since Congratulations, every other song on the radio has been by him. The world needs a small break so he can grow the anticipation for his next project. I'd agree if this was some sort of Ariana Grande situation where his singles have gotten progresively worse (i.e. "boyfriend" and the Charlie's song), but "Circles" is one of his best yet and I'm still playing "Sunflower" like it's a current hit.

All other songs in top 10 (except Yummy) are up too but it could be close to 3 million on Friday, although Selena is releasing so people might listen to her songs for a few days.

All I want this year is for Post to make a rock album. I don’t care what else happens as long as that does. Yasss. Would stream the hell out of Post if that happens...

I'm conflicted on the idea of Post Malone going for an all rock album.
On the one hand, he has good taste in rock and seems to have more respect for it than hip-hop, on the other hand I get the feeling we'd get a neutered, overly sanitized version of rock that'd be on the verge of pop from the label aka every other "rock band" on the Billboard charts. And on one hand, it'd be good to have rock back on the charts...and on the other hand, it speaks of the rather bleak state of modern rock that instead of promoting say The 1975 or even Clairo, we're going to Post Malone.
Take What You Want was so good because it felt like the best combination of hip-hop and heavy metal and if he went all out with rock, I'm worried we'll get more of BLOW which...egh.

I think he would excel with more hip-hop/trap/rock/metal infused songs like what he did with Take What You Want. I think (and hope) he will continue to experiment with that sound on his next album.

Wait...if The Box goes #1 will it be the first non-single chart topper?

Wait...if The Box goes #1 will it be the first non-single chart topper? No. Nelly & Kelly’s “Dilemma” did that as far back as 2002. It was never sent to radio, nor was their any plans to release it as an official single; “Air Force Ones” was going to be the second official single. As a matter of fact, the video for the “Dilemma” was only filmed after it hit number one on the Hot 100.

Rhythmic and Urban radio picked up “Dilemma” in July while “Hot In Herre” was still number one (Pop radio did a month later), but Nelly’s record label literally had no plans to make the former an official single at the time. Also, “Dilemma” wasn’t released as an official WW single until October, the same month it peaked at number one in the U.K even though it had already spent almost two months at number one in North America. Also, if it wasn’t for “Dilemma”, Avril Lavigne’s “Complicated” could’ve potentially peaked at number one. “Complicated” was at #2 for a few weeks behind “Hot In Herre”, until “Dilemma” literally leapt over it and took the top spot. The latter was BB’s ‘Greatest Radio Gainer’ for practically 6 weeks. “Complicated” then spent several more weeks at #2 behind “Dilemma”.

Dilemma was on the Radio Songs chart and as an official single otherwise it could have never got to number one. This link shows it entered from 51 to 24 on all genre radio songs. www.billboard.com/charts/radio-songs/2002-07-20

I'm assuming you mean 40M+ streams, since a song doesn't do much impact with just 4M streams. It debuted at #2 and then dropped at #23. It was blocked by Girls Like You, although barely according to fhas.

According to Wikipedia it was released as a radio single (US) on July 30, 2002, it didn't reach number one until the tracking week ending on August 17 of that year. Although they didn't have any plans on releasing it, the label released it just in time for it to be considered a single that topped the Hot 100.

I wonder if an act will ever debut with over 6M streams in the U.S.

Dilemma is another 'almost but not quite' situation. It entered the top 10 on the chart dated 7/27/2002 (in real-time, this was the third week of July and only three weeks after his album release) solely on (unsolicited!) airplay. This is what prompted Nelly to officially release it as a single on July 30, about two real-time weeks after the top 10 entry. Dilemma topped the chart dated 8/17/02 (in real-time, either one or two weeks after the official July 30 release - I am uncertain which exact date this would have been announced since charts ran on a different schedule back then). It would have undoubtedly reached #1 even if Nelly hadn't gone ahead with it - at this point servicing to radio was truly just a formality - but it was 'official' when it topped the chart, even if only by a hair.
The video was in fact released after hitting #1, though they kind of didn't have any choice in the matter there. The smashing happened so fast that they weren't even able to schedule the filming for it until late August, by which time it had been #1 for a couple of weeks. Dilemma's sudden success is also why Kelly's album release got pulled up to the fall of 2002. (She was initially scheduled for 2003, but her and Beyonce's release dates were swapped due to Dilemma smashing and Work It Out...not smashing.)
I'm not sure Complicated would have ever been #1. Complicated only reached #2 for two non-consecutive weeks. The first week, Hot In Herre was still #1. The second week was only four weeks into Dilemma's run; Hot In Herre was still in the top 3 that week, and like I mentioned above, Dilemma seemed destined for #1 even if Nelly had chosen to ignore it. IMO, either Dilemma would have lasted a month at the top just off the strength of its buzz, or Nelly would have still been actively pushing Hot In Herre and gotten 10+ weeks at #1 with that. Complicated was going to be blocked by Nelly either way.

It's honestly stunning that I went from wondering just how overwhelming Justin's #1 debut was gonna be to seriously questioning if he's gonna have to tack 10,000 Hours onto his album like Nicki did with FEFE to make it seem like it has a hit. I hope for his sake that either Yummy stabilizes in a respectable place or his second single is an undeniable smash. I've said this before, some times releasing the album without a lead single is the best move in the streamimg era. A lot of artists get their biggest hit only after the album releases and fans gravitate towards a certain song, even after releasing multiple pre-album singles. Hopefully Bieber gets his Bad Guy or The Box once the album releases. Now that I think about it, this might be the best way of doing an album/era rollout these days. "bad guy", "The Box", and "My Oh My" all got an organic boost from the album release, the latter two which will definitely encourage the artists in question to give them the full single treatment. However, this would also result in much less singles being released per album, which would be unfortunate. Nevertheless, I still think a lead single is important to build up hype for the upcoming era and setting up a new artistic and thematic direction. "Don't Start Now", "Lose You To Love Me", and "thank u, next" are all excellent examples of lead singles. Poor choices like "ME!" and "Yummy", on the other hand...

I think that if artists drop a single, wait for a few months to drop another single, and then release the album a few months later is a good idea in the streaming era. Post Malone is an example of that, he dropped Rockstar in Sept. 2017, then released Psycho in Feb. 2018, and released the B&B album in May 2018; people gravitated towards Better Now and became the last hit of the era.
