So, I guess this January's album releases are turning out to be the most interesting in quite a few years. I know right! Don't forget we're also getting Meghan Trainor's long-awaited third album and Kesha's new album on the last day of the month as well. It's been quite some time since we've had such an intense month for new releases. Hope the rest of the year keeps it up. 😉 Just so people don't think I'm nothing more than a rap/hip-hop hater (which I'm not), who in the world is awaiting Meghan's album? She's clearly taken a page from the mumble rapper book to put out the same song again and again. It worked twice, third time (with "No Excuses") was not the charm. Does anybody care anymore? As for Kesha, she's actually making good music nowadays, sad she's no longer bringing in the numbers. After what she went through, she sure deserves to.

Here's a visual of what hip-hop is doing to pop and other genres in 2020.

Cole's album will either be AOTY material or the worst of the year and I'm looking forward either way OR it'll just end up being really bland and generic like most Cole albums are. lmao this. He's never been "worst of the year" or "AOTY" material and I don't expect that to change anytime soon. There's a solid chance Kesha and especially Meghan Trainor completely fly under the radar considering the big releases on the schedule.

Random question but why is Matthew Wilder’s “Break My Stride” (from 1983) #165 on US Spotify? TikTok?

Sadly an unpopular opinion, but Eminem isn't even top 100 in terms of GOAT rappers tbh. Success =/= talent and I'd take DIY psychotic, drug-fueled soundcloud rap over 50 year old corny clown any day lmao. Maybe thats just me tho You can name 100 rappers? Back to Eminem, this is nothing more than you guys being ageist, just like the average music consumer and radio station. Soon as a performer goes over the 15-year-mark they're automatically has-beens. It's unfair, wrong and uncalled for. Eminem's dropping new music that is culturally relevant, comes with a strong message, has good beats and lyrics you can actually understand. But he's old (though he looks great and can still get it tbh) and suddenly his message is too shocking. It's supposed to be shocking. Wake up, people. There's far more shootings in the world, especially in America, that go beyond the drive-bys that take out your faved mumble rappers/drug dealers/gun smugglers. Children are dying. LGBTQ+ people are dying. Churches, schools and celebrations are getting shot up, and he's trying to draw attention to that and not embelish it. That reference to the Manchester shooting is supposed to keep you remembering it. Kudos, Em. I lowkey want Rihanna to effing flop to teach everyone here a lesson, and I love her to bits. She's super old now though, isn't she? Go to Vegas with the rest of 'em, Riri, nobody's checking for you. Sounding more and more like Geraldo Rivera with each post.

The hate some of y'all have for rap is crazy I guarantee if Drake dropped a surprise album today instead of em yall would have a issue with it,but as soon as one of your pop darlings drop a album you don't want anyone to hate on it . Well maybe if the surprise drops didn't suck, we'd be complaining less. Yeah...Okay

Bad beats, rushed production, boring and weird choppy flows, and corny metaphors that don't make sense half the time. Don't tell me that Eminem is fighting for LGBT rights lmao, he was calling people the F word just a year ago. Good message =/= good music.

It's that he's old and hasn't evolved his subject matter in the past 20 years. People have different standards for a 47 year old vs. a 27 year old.

Most artists usually tick at least one of those boxes. I agree with you on Kesha and Meghan. I doubt either of them scratch 100K first week.

He did have Middle Child last year, which was a pretty huge hit. He should have had an album prepped up around that time, but whatever, he'll do 350k+ with his next album regardless.

I don’t know how anybody could listen to Black Thought’s verse on that album and still call Eminem the GOAT afterwards. Thank you Tarik for showing us rap stars can age gracefully.

As I keep saying, the problem is in the delivery, the presentation of the music. If the actual music isn't good, surprise surprise, no one likes it. And as for the message, it's good and it's nice that Em is using his platform to deliver this message but as I said, art is more than message and if you want that message to reach an audience and hit deeper, you need the presentation of your ideas to be just as good. Would you want to watch a movie that's mediocre in cinematography, editing, direction, acting, etc., but "has a nice message" or do you want a movie that might be simplistic but is more interesting to look at, has more engaging characters and provides a better experience? Oh and also, there are other rappers beyond Eminem talking about gun violence and shootings in America, and who are doing so in a much more interesting way.

See, now this might be good. I like Kendrick, different voice, good songs and flow, nice lyrics. The top 10 is sorely missing some rock infusions.

Fair enough, guess I read into everything wrong. It just frustrates me when the artists I grew up with suddenly become irrelevant, but you make a good point, they need to actually make good music if they wanna remain relevant because it's gonna come as easily for them as it once did. It saddens me so that Katy Perry is all but a legacy artist now, but the truth is her 2019 songs (and there were plenty of 'em) are just not very good. As for the message, what was said originally is that Em was being too gory and insensitive, which I still disagree with. Video wasn't that shocking, come on. I see no wrong with the way he's presenting his message. All in all, everything falls down to taste really. Subjective as ever. Also I was bored. Soz.

I think he makes good music. He just doesn't make memorable music (if that makes any sense). He doesn't go out of his way to make hits because he's tried to in the past and he's failed miserably at it, so now he just sticks to what he knows and what he's good at, which is really what's best for him. Middle Child is the only exception. Kendrick's DAMN. is almost at 4 billion streams on Spotify. Cole's most streamed album is still 2014 FHD with less than 2.5 billion Spotify streams. KOD, his 2018 album, has just over a billion streams. It's like his albums do numbers in their first week and everyone just moves on from them.

Omg yes on Black Thought being one of the GOATs of hip-hop. If y'all have not listened to either of the Streams of Thought EPs he put out in 2018, do so because they're amazing. Vol. 1 is only under 20 minutes long but just in terms of straight bars about gangbanging, some of the best hip-hop I've heard in the last five years.

Well, I guess that would make up for the fact that Post Malone didn't give a greater push to "Take What You Want". I so desperately need a rock revival on the charts, especially looking at the current tragedy on the Hot Rock Songs chart right now (where Panic! At The Disco has been blocking the TOP 2 for nearly a year now with songs from their pop-inspired record).
