Alright, I am now officially done with the 1988 year end, and I gotta say, I’m really proud of how this came out. I decided to change the format and make it a video, so you can click right here and it’ll take you to it

Quite a few things stood out to me making this list. The runs at the top of the chart keep getting shorter each year. And yet, this year, the overall chart runs started getting longer. And this chart doesn’t do that justice. For example, Red Red Wine’s total chart run lasted a then-record 40 weeks. Multiple songs started approaching 30 weeks. The end result is a weaker chart than ever at the top, and a very strong chart at the bottom (helped by the 53 week year). But anyways, for the songs that missed Made 1987 -Don’t You Want Me -Faith -Is This Love -Heaven is a Place On Earth -Shake Your Love -Should’ve Known Better -We’ll Be Together Caught Between Years: -Candle in the Wind -Catch Me (I’m Falling) -Cherry Bomb -Tell it To My Heart (sorry Private Dancer) -Valerie

Only 2 new songs added to the playlist, those being Two Occasions and Circle in the Sand.
Yeah, that's it - pretty much every other song made Billboard's official 1988 or 1989 YEs.

I was really hoping Hysteria would at least make the top 110 (this year really could’ve used some more Def Leppard), but alas, despite peaking in the top 10, it wasn’t meant to be

At least Welcome to the Jungle made it.
What happened to Don’t Rush Me? Is it going to make 1989 or does it get caught between years?

Don’t Rush Me had 104k points in 88. It’ll most likely get caught between years. And if you think that song getting caught is bad...well, I guess you’ll just have to wait and see what else misses

Forgot to mention, I'm surprised there's only one song in this entire new YE for 1988 that didn't crack the top 10. That period must have had a lot of top 10 turnover, even moreso than most other years of the '80s we've covered.

For example, Red Red Wine’s total chart run lasted a then-record 40 weeks. That wasn't quite the record at the time. "I Go Crazy" was also 40 weeks and "Tainted Love" had 43 a few years before
It is absolutely insane though that there was literally not a single song with more than 7 weeks in the top 10. Not even sure how that happens!

I forgot about Tainted Love. Just goes to show that I forget all of these little facts right after entering them. In any case, my point about overall chart runs starting to last longer remains. It’s weird to me that it didn’t translate to the top 10 whatsoever. I’d really love to find out what drove the short runs. My guess is that MTV started cycling through songs at a very rapid rate (hence why this started after 1983), but I can’t say for sure. And what caused ‘88 to be the point when overall runs started lasting longer again-to the point that Billboard would introduce the 20/50 recurrent rule just a few years later

Oh and one more point. I’m pretty sure Billboard changed their inverse formula for this year end chart, getting away from the 90-1 inverse for 11-100 that had existed previously. Otherwise, even with a peak of only #19, Push It by Salt-n-Pepa would have made the original list. It had 1,390 points through that system and started charting in late November, which means it easily would have made any of the early 80s lists and even the mid 80s

I believe the song came out around this time, and just continued to chart in the bottom quardrant for like 25+ weeks.

That song came out in 1998, not ‘88. Which means it Billboard let it dodge recurrency. Just in case y’all think One Too Many is anything new

I guess it got a bit caught between years but how much points would its full run have had?

Well on my list, it never had a shot. It only got 158k total points (although that would have gotten it onto the earlier lists). I was moreso talking about the official Billboard lists, where the cutoff for the earlier lists was usually in the 900 point range. Push It was well above that threshold, and would have had all its weeks count toward one year. So even if it didn’t hit a year end, I’d still call it a hit

It barely made the 1989 list, and removing its weeks from December of '88 would likely kick it out completely.

Here's 1962! This is honestly a really jarring shift from doing a bunch of years in the mid 60's because the longevity is all of a sudden way higher in part because there used to be a recurrent rule that dropped songs off if they were below 50 and going down but now they can just drift down. The other big difference is in quality, like we went from some of the greatest years of all time (at least before 2009 blew them all away) and now there's at least three actually terrible songs in the top 10 & just nothing at all in terms of classics or really anything people would care about. But hey these years need chronicling too and also we got an upgrade at song #1

I'm not 100% sure The Lion Sleeps Tonight made 1961 it had 183k that year so if the cutoff is insanely high then this might be its only year. The Twist is repeating from the 1960 year end list but could it have made 1961 as well? Stay tuned 0.o

So Billboard did their cursed 44 week year shtick again so you know the rules, anything from the bottom 20 gets bounced! Mass destruction of a bunch of Twists #60 - Moon River #72 - Uptown #76 - Love Me Warm And Tender #78 - She's Got You #82 - Funny Way Of Laughin' #83 - A Swingin' Safari #84 - Tell Me #86 - Little Diane #87 - Percolator (Twist) #88 - Twist, Twist Senora #89 - Twistin' Matilda #90 - Gravy (For My Mashed Potatoes) #91 - Walk On The Wild Side #92 - Soul Twist #93 - I'll Never Dance Again #94 - I'm Blue (The Gong-Gong Song) #95 - Where Have All The Flowers Gone #96 - (Girls, Girls, Girls) Made To Love #97 - Town Without Pity #98 - If I Had A Hammer #99 - I Wish That We Were Married Next closest 10

Good lord this year was an experience. I do actually listen to the songs a lot while i'm doing these and going from the mid 60's to this was such a drop that I'm thinking I should have started in 1960 and then just gone linearly. It's just crazy to think that the music explosion that happened in the mid 60's was such a fever dream at this point (we're at the point where the Everly Brothers were having top 10 hits lol) Also there were a ton of ripoff songs this year. I guess I should have seen it coming because there were 9 different Twists on the original year end and five on mine but looking at the weekly charts there were so many more. Like every single week there would be one or two Twists debuting that would then leave quickly. And it wasn't just Twists, like every single time that a somewhat unique song hit there'd be a few people jumping on the bandwagon, sometimes the original artist themself (see song #109). It's probably because there was just so little for anyone to care about that the longevity was so much higher this year. Limbo Rock by Chubby Checker had a 23 week chart run which would have been at #3 on this list if all its weeks were in one year and is the longest I've seen so far not counting a couple songs with two separate runs.

Finally got around to updating the playlist. 19 new songs added for 1962, which I think might be a record for these revised YEs (maybe close with 1965, I haven't checked too thoroughly).

I would like to see someone on here do the January-December Year-Ends of 1970-1979, I'll be curious to know which Songs from those years end up on top.

Yeah, I want to see mikerivera do 1979 next.
Also, even if it does not make the 1961 list, The Lion Sleeps Tonight will make another appearance in the early 1970s.

I’ve been thinking about that. And I’ve decided that I’m going to do the 1970s after finishing the 1991 list. That said, I think I’m going to take a break and get to it next year. I’m gonna have a busy schedule coming up after August, so using this as an off period would be nice. But rest assured, I will be getting to it. In fact, if I have some extra time, I might just begin working on them during my off period, and depending on how many I end up making, I could post the charts on weekly basis in 2022 instead of biweekly (we’ll have to see). And yes, I will post a 2021 chart in December as well.

I'm most interested to see what an updated 1974 YE would look like, especially as there were several #1 hits toward the end of that year like Whatever Gets You Through The Night and You Haven't Done Nothin' that missed the YE entirely.

These lists are very nice to look at.
