Speaking of year defining songs, Close To You is clearly that song for 1970. I’m not sure if it will be the #1 on the J-D Year End, but that song made The Carpenters a household name (introducing most to Karen Carpenter’s voice), as well as brought the rise to American Top 40, being the first long-running #1 on the countdown.

So I got about five weeks into 2018 before I for whatever reason decided to do 2009 first and so I have been doing that ever since. I am almost done with that list. Oh and btw there's a pretty good chance I Gotta Feeling gets the top YE spot like it deserves!

Not 7 minutes - actually 3:47. Few big hits from that era exceed 4-5 minutes, most were in the 3-4 minute range

For everything past 1992, we tried to provide the closest possible estimate to align with Billboard's calculations. We can't be 100% sure about all of them though (for example in 2008 there are several songs that were below the cutoff of the original list & it's extremely difficult to know in what order to place them)

For 1959-1991 we used our own formulas because Billboards aren't very good (usually the standard #1 = 100, #2 = 99 etc. which we know is pretty inaccurate) and even then were frequently riddled with inconsistencies, & the charts are 100% accurate to those formulas barring typos.

mikerivera Only thing I’d double-check (when you have time, of course) is What’s Your Country Song, I have a feeling you forgot to subtract the points from its debut week in November 2020, which would put it a few spots lower than where it is now.

The worst part about losing all that work is that this chart such an upgrade for an already good list. We drop Good Time, Put Your Records On, Throat Baby, Lonely and DBTGA, and replace them with Easy On Me, Shivers, Pepas, You Should Probably Leave and Sand in My Boots. The only L is losing pov, but I’d take that for all the other changes. Possibly the biggest W for any list on this thread

Alright, I'm well-rested now, which means I can give my observations on this year's January-December YE:

- The top 5 for this list definitely makes more sense than on the official YE. Good 4 U, Kiss Me More, and Leave the Door Open absolutely felt like they had more of an impact in 2021 than Blinding Lights and Mood, which were still huge, but are now more appropriately positioned.
- Maybe it's just the losses above it from late 2020 songs like Positions, Go Crazy, and 34+35, but I wasn't expecting Up, Best Friend, and Rapstar to be 5 spots higher than they all were on the official YE.
- Perhaps the biggest surprise of all the gainers from the official YE to this one was Chasing After You managing to crack the top 50 - I know longevity probably played a factor here, but it's not the kind of song I would have envisioned finishing there, even with its extra weeks.
- Sad to see Todo De Ti and POV getting knocked out, but getting Easy On Me, Pepas, You Should Probably Leave, and My Universe to replace all the terrible songs that got caught between years makes it all worth it.

The Spotify playlist of every song to make a January-December YE but not an official Billboard YE was updated yesterday, with 8(!) songs added - the most we've had in a post-SoundScan year that I can remember! Of course, 1 or 2 of them could still make the official Billboard YE for 2022, and if that's the case, I'll remove them, but it's absolutely impressive all the same.
