Harry/Columbia submitted his first album/singles to the rock categories; that's why he didn't get anything.
While I do agree that not much has changed from his first album to his second in terms of overall perception - he is clearly an albums artist, but he hasn't yet proven that he can reliably produce hit singles - I think he can easily nab a nomination in pop album if Columbia sees the error of their ways (no amount of classic rock influence is going to make anyone in the US perceive him as a rock artist) and send him to the right categories. Pop solo perf is a bit dicier since there will be no shortage of hits to choose from but I'd say chances there would also be pretty good. I don't feel strongly about his chances in any of the majors at the moment, regardless of how they handle the genre.

The only way king Harry might not slay is if they are too afraid of his power

Harry Styles didnβt get anything for his last album, and OD never even got a New Artist nod. Not sure why Styles would suddenly be a favorite. Maybe if the album produces a legitimate big hit heβd have a fighting chance? I always find this frame of thinking odd. As if an artist can never get a nomination ever if they didnβt get one the first time they became eligible. Of course they can, but that's why I followed up my point in saying the album hasn't produced a big hit (yet?). Styles' had some (perhaps bought) Grammy hype for his first album, and it didn't get anything. Usually for an artist to then truly enter the fray, they need to release a project with real critical and/or commercial heft. Styles' album has solid reviews, but not Kacey Musgraves or Lana Del Rey level. It debuted at #1, but it's going to need to sustain for awhile to have the kind of commercial success that lands major nods. It could happen, I'm just saying I don't see where he's there yet.

If I'm just looking at Record of the Year, I would say as of right now: Harry Styles - "Adore You" The Weeknd - "Blinding Lights" Dua Lipa - "Don't Stop Now" In a fair and just world, these would be three perfect contenders. But we never know if something from Justin's new album or "Memories" might make the cut depending on their longevity and chart success. I think "The Box" by Roddy Ricch might have a chance at being nominated here as well, but we'll have to wait and see. Oh, and I wouldn't doubt on "Dance Monkey" being nominated for some category, even it it might be a minor one like Best Pop Song. Also rooting for "Ballin'", "Circles" (or "Take What You Want", which is virtually impossible, though), and "Good As Hell" to get some nominations. A lot of possibilities given the 8 slots available. I did think about "Memories" too. "The Box" would fit the hip-hop slot.

How do you think the pandemic will affect the nominees next year? Maybe it won't? We are only in April but I can see more album being pushed back so they miss the cut off date.

I never even thought this far ahead. Depending on how long it even goes on for, I could see next yearβs show being scaled way back or possibly delayed or limited to only some awards.

(If Shawn Mendes got the nom with "In My Blood," I wouldn't count Harry out even if "Adore You" starts free falling on the charts tomorrowβit already left a mark imo.)

He ended up doing better on the Hot 100 than I thought he would + 'rona thinned out the field for him. Unless the back of the summer is extremely competitive I'd say he's all but a shoo-in.

Who do y'all think are good contenders for Best New Artist this year?
For some reason, I think Megan Thee Stallion or Summer Walker might sneak in.

Doja Cat, blackbear, Tones and I, Gabby Barrett, Phoebe Bridgers, Lauv, Meghan Thee Stallion, Conan Gray, Summer WalkerΒ & Ingrid Andress are all possible picks, with Doja being the frontrunner. I'm keeping an eye out for TikTok fueled artists like Surfaces, Powfu & BENEE, too edit: Mickey Guyton could also totally get a nom if she plays her promo cards right in the upcoming months Edit 2: there is sooo much buzz around Rina Sawayama, maybe she could get a nom too

Best New Artist should really go back down to 5. Now we're gonna include tik tok acts?

Best New Artist should really go back down to 5. Now we're gonna include tik tok acts? Iβm really torn on the expansion from 5 to 8 categories. On one hand more artists get recognition for their work. On the other hand, it makes a nomination easier to get, and therefore less exclusive. Now: which critically acclaimed album by a left of center female artist will get one or two Big 4 noms and nothing anywhere else, save for packaging/music video?

These 21 Acts Rank Among the Greatest of All Time Billboard 200 Artists, But Have Yet to Win a Grammy 5/5/2020 by Paul Grein
Just over one-fifth of the artists on Billboard's exclusive list of Greatest of All Time Billboard 200 Artists have yet to win a Grammy in competition. These artists have frequently gotten phone calls or texts from their managers with good chart news, but they have never once heard the phrase "And the Grammy goes toβ¦" followed by their name. (Except maybe in their dreams.)
Here's a complete list of the 21 artists who rank among the Greatest of All Time Billboard 200 Artists who have yet to win a Grammy in competition. They're listed in descending order of where they rank on the GOAT list.
Miley Cyrus. Cyrus has received just one Grammy nomination, when Bangerz (a.k.a., the album where she took a "Wrecking Ball" to her old Hannah Montana persona) landed a 2014 nod for best pop vocal album. Cyrus is just 27, younger than any other solo artist on this list, so there's still time for her to win a Grammy. GOAT ranking: No. 31. Nickelback. The critically-panned Canadian pop/rock band has received five Grammy nods. GOAT ranking: No. 32.
The Beach Boys. The Beach Boys are widely regarded as one of the greatest groups of all time, but Grammy voters weren't tuned into contemporary pop and rock in the mid-'60s when the So Cal group was at its peak. The group received four Grammy nods, three for its 1966 masterwork "Good Vibrations" and one for its 1988 comeback hit "Kokomo." They received a lifetime achievement award in 2001. The group's mastermind Brian Wilson has won two Grammys on his own in the last 20 years. GOAT ranking: No. 35.
Guns N' Roses. The band's 1987 debut album Appetite for Destruction is one of the classic rock albums of the 1980s, but it wasn't even nominated for a Grammy. The band later received three nods. GOAT ranking: No. 46.
The Monkees. Back in the day, some dismissed the group as the Pre-Fab Four. Now, people are more inclined to say, "Sure, they weren't the Beatles, but they made some great pop records." They had four nominations, two each for "Last Train to Clarksville" and "I'm a Believer." Michael Nesmith (a.k.a. the Smart Monkee) went on to win a Grammy on his own. He won the first award for video of the year for Michael Nesmith in Elephant Parts (1981). GOAT ranking: No. 49.
The Supremes. It's hard to imagine that this trailblazing trio never won a Grammy. They were nominated for two of their 12 No. 1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 ("Baby Love" and "Stop! in the Name of Love"). It's even harder to imagine that Diana Ross has yet to win one on her own, despite 10 additional nominations. (Ross received a lifetime achievement award in 2012.) GOAT ranking: 52.
Def Leppard. This English band has never even been nominated for a Grammy. "Love Bites" -- and so does Grammy Nominations Day for this band. GOAT ranking: No. 55. Journey. The band wasn't even nominated for a Grammy until 1996, when it received its only Grammy nod to date, for "When You Love a Woman." Which means there was no Grammy love for "Don't Stop Believin,'" which has become a pop-culture perennial. GOAT ranking: No. 58.
Rascal Flatts. The country trio has received four nominations, all for best country performance by a duo or group with vocal. GOAT ranking: No. 61.
Foreigner. The British/American band has received three nods, including best new artist of 1977. The group's Mick Jones has received four additional nods on his own, including song of the year for writing "I Want to Know What Love Is," Foreigner's only No. 1 hit on the Hot 100. GOAT ranking: No. 62. Kenny Chesney. Chesney has been voted entertainer of the year four times by the Country Music Assn., but has yet to win a Grammy. He has received six nods, including best country album for Cosmic Hallelujah (2017). GOAT ranking: No. 65.
Kid Rock. The rock star has received five nominations, including best new artist (1999) and best rock album for Rock N Roll Jesus (2008). GOAT ranking: No. 66.
Andy Williams. The pop crooner hosted the first seven live Grammy telecasts, but he never got to bring a trophy home. He received six nominations, including album of the year for Days of Wine and Roses, which topped the Billboard 200 for 16 weeks in 1963. Williams died in 2012 at age 84. He is the only solo artist on this list who has taken his final encore. GOAT ranking: No. 67. Backstreet Boys. The boy band-turned-man band was nominated for best new artist (1998) and was back in the running the following year in four categories, including album of the year for Millennium and record of the year for the irresistible "I Want It That Way." They have amassed eight nods over the years. GOAT ranking: No. 69.
Cat Stevens. The pop star wasn't even nominated in the '70s, when he had a string of hits including "Peace Train" and "Morning Has Broken." He finally landed his first nomination, as Yusuf/Cat Stevens, for best folk album for The Laughing Apple (2017). GOAT ranking: No. 74.
Toby Keith. The country star has amassed seven nominations, including two for "Beer for My Horses," a 2003 collab with Willie Nelson. GOAT ranking: No. 79. The Who. Here's another band that would make virtually everybody's list of the greatest bands of all time. But they weren't even nominated for a Grammy until 1990. The English band has received two Grammy nods. They received a lifetime achievement award in 2001. GOAT ranking: No. 80.
The Moody Blues. Like Def Leppard, the Moody Blues have never even been nominated for a Grammy. Their biggest hit, "Nights in White Satin," was ineligible in 1972 when it rose to No. 2 on the Hot 100 because it had first been released on a 1968 album. GOAT ranking: No. 82.
Creedence Clearwater Revival. Ike & Tina Turner won a Grammy for their "nice 'n' rough" cover version of "Proud Mary," but CCR's original version wasn't even nominated. In fact, CCR was never nominated for a Grammy. The group's mastermind John Fogerty has gone on to receive eight nominations for his solo work. He won a Grammy for best rock album for Blue Moon Swamp (1997). GOAT ranking: No. 85. Josh Groban. Groban seems to fall between the cracks in Grammy ballotingβtoo pop for classical voters; too classical for pop voters. Groban's millions of fans don't seem to be thrown by his range. Groban has amassed four nominations, including three for best traditional pop vocal album. Groban is 39, making him the second-youngest solo artist on this list, so, like Cyrus, he still has time to win a Grammy. GOAT ranking: No. 89.
Heart. The groundbreaking female-led band has landed four nods. GOAT ranking: No. 95.

The Weeknd, Dua Lipa, Fiona Apple, Harry Styles, and Post Malone seem like clear frontrunners for Album of the Year nominations. Maybe Roddy Ricch if he doesn't totally lose momentum? Would love to see Bad Bunny get in but I'm not holding my breath. Idk if Doja Cat has the gas for an Album nod or if it'll just be BNA & "Say So."
TBD on Chromatica. TBD on Drake's upcoming album. TBD on Adele and/or Rihanna releasing something.

At this point in the year, I'd say we have three locks for AOTY: Fetch the Bolt Cutters, After Hours & Future Nostalgia.
Highwomen & Fine Line are the only other 2 LPs that I'm fairly confident have a shot (this is Styles' breakout year & the Grammys loooove Brandi Carlile). Gaslighter is possible, but who knows how good it is yet (Highwomen also might take the country AOTY slot anyways). Roddy Ricch & Bad Bunny have a chance, and Doja Cat's Lizzo-esque breakout could get her a nod, too. There's a wild card every year - last year, it was i,i & 7, and before that it was H.E.R. & By The Way, I Forgive You. This year? Hrm. Maybe Pearl Jam & Tame Impala...?

yes a #111 hit album! The Guardian called it "a terrible pop album, but very effective contraception." The Observer said "occasionally painful yet weirdly Payne-less." The Independent said the album is "smelling of body oil and new car upholstery."

I know she's not traditionally been a Grammy favorite, but Katy Perry really delivers with her new song Daisies. Her vocals have improved so much, and it's a powerful song. Great instrumental track too, especially how they blend the use of guitar acoustic and the rest of the track. If this first song is indicative of the rest of her album, Katy Perry should really be back on the scene for the Grammy Awards. www.youtube.com/watch?v=NutHKRKBgR0
