I have my 1, 2, and 6 left. I'm pleasantly surprised that "The Matador" has managed to make it this far - I love it but I didn't think it would come this far.

Our top 3 all spent time at #1, and really all had a good shot at finishing on top. There was a period where they would literally change positions with each other with every list revealed. They were really the only three songs that had a chance at #1 ("Can't Take Back Goodbye" was the only other song to spend time at #1, but that was only because it was #1 on my list and my list was in first, haha).

Well with the Kelly duet out I'm feeling more confident that the lead single won this thing. That's the one album cut that I thought might threaten its chances.

Our #2 song has 64 points. It has one #1 placement, and no ranks below the top 10. It actually led the results longer than any other song.
Our #1 song has 52 points. It has three #1 placements, and no ranks below the top 8. It pulled ahead of #s 2 and 3 in a big way near the very end of the submissions process.

Well The Matador did way better than I thought, but the lead single got it in the bag.

Workin' on Whiskey gave me major Chris Stapleton vibes and I am surprised he did not write this song. For as worst as Garth can get, the duet is a fine song, it still pales against other two collabs above it so it deserves to be eliminated before them. Love the belting in chorus of When Lonely Calls. And that gorgeous steel guitar in the middle too! The piano lead of Tell Me Something I Don't Know is such a worm, but I don't really like the chorus. Bible And A .44 is too private for a cover, but aside from that Trisha sings it well. Sidenote that Ashley McBryde EP is great and y'all should really listen it in case you are tired of mainstream country woman songwriting.

#2 - Every Girl In Ths TownWriters: Erik Dylan, Connie Harrington, Caitlyn Smith Total Points: 64 tim - 1 .indulgecountry - 2 castleoblivion26 - 2 SHOOTER - 2 fearlessarrow - 2 bboat11 - 3 someguy - 4 recordyear - 5 Troublemaker - 5 born - 5 taylor - 6 austin - 8 BackwoodsBarbie - 9 Kanenrá:ke - 10 Finishing in second place is "Every Girl In This Town", the lead (and to date only) single from this project. A true return to form, it catapulted Trisha back to the airplay charts. Although it received an artificial and pre-arranged #21 debut, it managed to hang on at country radio for over half a year, and peak in the 20s all on its own. It is classic Trisha, and is her biggest hit in over a decade. It led this process for a lot of the time, but slid a bit at the end. It looked like it would finish at #3, but at the very end was able to move back to #2.

#1 - The MatadorWriter: Gretchen Peters Total Points: 52 recordyear - 1 Troublemaker - 1 taylor - 1 tim - 2 bboat11 - 2 born - 2 castleoblivion26 - 3 Kanenrá:ke - 3 someguy - 5 BackwoodsBarbie - 5 fearlessarrow - 6 austin - 6 .indulgecountry - 7 SHOOTER - 8 I am so thrilled that this won. Despite my #5 rank, I love this song, and think it is an instant classic. It is lyrically and melodically haunting. It is written by Gretchen Peters, who also wrote Trisha's classic "On A Bus To St. Cloud", as well as Martina McBride's "Independence Day", among many others. It always was a top 5 contender here, but hit its stride about around the middle of the rankdown, and then really pulled ahead at the end.

Wow! My #6 rank doesn't do justice to how impressed I was with the song... it's a great winner. Thanks for hosting someguy! I finally was able to check this album out because of this rankdown and I'm glad I did.

Thanks everyone for playing along! Every Girl is a terrific album, and I'm glad that this could have been the necessary push to get people to listen to it.
Now that we've started a Trisha series, the next one will be due on March 27th. I'll get all the listening links set in a few minutes. An album a month seems manageable.

Me throwing a victory party for "The Matador" and my perfect #1 ranking because y'all know I don't get those! Color me shocked that it made it this far! I absolutely adore The Matador; everything about it is incredible. That said, I had fully expected it to leave somewhere towards the end because at first it did stick out like a sore thumb on the album in terms of the production, and I had especially expected "Every Girl" to have this one by a mile (which i wouldn't have been upset to see) but I'm glad "The Matador" showed its worth! (Excited to rank it on the future Best of the Best IV ) Thanks for hosting this someguy and I'm so here for this entire series! Excited for what's next

Wow, I'm stunned! This is one of the most surprising and unexpected upsets in an album rankdown. I really thought the lead single would have it in the bag and I never would've guessed "The Matador" would've finished as the highest album cut let alone that it would unseat the radio hit for the win. It is a truly great song though, despite me being one of the lowest ranks for it, so I'm not bothered by this outcome.

#2 - Every Girl In Ths Town Oh. It is designed for airplay anyway so I don't think the slightly shallow lyrics hurt it much. That being said, The Matador is stellar in its production, lyrics, etc. The trumpet and sparse piano are good replacement of original instruments. Even though she interprets the character in the song as her husband, the lyrics are still worth reading. Gretchen Peters used accordions instead.

Overall, this rankdown went quite well! I am not surprised to see the more uptempo tracks kinda get the shaft here, because there are some really strong ballads on this album! "Drink Up" is just plain unnecessary at worst, imo, but I also find it to be pretty catchy. Not at all surprised it's in last place. "Find A Way", on the other hand, is super catchy! I kinda had this in my bottom 2 or 3 for awhile, but as I listened to the album more and more, some of the ballads started to wear on me while this one kept getting better and better! "I'll Carry You Home" is a beautiful song!! But, this is one of the aforementioned ballads that started to wear on me after a whole bunch of listens. This song really doesn't offer much compared to other ballads like "Tell Me Something I Don't Know" and "The Matador". It feels like one that they could have cut if they wanted to have only a 12 song album. It doesn't really do much that other songs on this album don't do better. "Home" is one of the stupidest, most boring, and most overused song titles of all time, but tbh, Trisha's "Home" is probably my favorite of all the "Homes" I have heard from all the dozens of artists who have recorded a song called "Home" in my lifetime. This song is WAY better than its title!!!! Ultimately I had no idea how this song would do, because it is practically set up for failure with a terrible title like "Home", plus it is very slow and hymn-like. Ultimately I had to put this one pretty high because it is one of the most infectiously sing-along-able ballads on this album (like I said, hymn-like! Lol) "Love You Anyway" is also fantastic, but is another ballad that feels almost unnecessary on an album that is already so ballad-heavy. This one could have also been cut, realistically. I fluctuated mightily on where to put it, but ultimately felt like back-middle was reasonable. "Something Kinda Like It" is super catchy! It also outlasted my expectations here! I kinda thought this one might finish right in the bottom 3 with "Drink Up" and "Find A Way". I'm pleased to see it last into the middle of this album It is a really fun song, and would literally be perfect with a '90s arrangement. Vocally, it doesn't sound like a song Trisha would sing; maybe one of the other '90s females like Patty Loveless or Pam Tillis, which might have factored against it a bit here. "Can't Take Back Goodbye" is another fantastic song. I LOVE the groove of the verses, but the chorus melody loses me a bit. Still, I am very happy to see this last into the middle of the album! "Workin' On Whiskey" was ROBBED. This song absolutely belongs in the top 5!!! This is a bit of an odd, moody song for Trisha to sing, but it sounds SO confident and amazing coming from her!!! It is a ballad with a bit of grit and spunk, which really helps set it apart!! "What Gave Me Away" is one that I wasn't sold on at the beginning, and it was honestly almost my last place. Trisha sounds great, but Garth's background vocals feel unnecessary. The melody is a tad clunky, and I also find the beginning instrumental to be subpar to the rest of the album too, which kinda makes me unenthused to listen to the rest of the song. Once the song gets into full swing, I like it a fair bit, but it doesn't take much to get sent to the bottom of this album because all the competition is so strong! "When Lonely Calls" Such a perfect ballad, and a powerful vocal from Trisha! The way this builds is certainly exciting, and will never get old to listen to! "Tell Me Something I Don't Know"; I hoped this song would do well, and I was not disappointed!! I mean, it should have made the top 3, but #4 is still really great on an album this strong!! Imo, this is the epitome of a perfect power ballad. The vocal is both strong and assertive, and the melody is not even slightly boring. The way the melody ebbs and flows throughout the chorus is so catchy. Kelly's backgrounds honestly make it that much better, but the song would still be my #1 even if it was just Trisha and some arbitrary studio vocalist. I have had this one on repeat for weeks now, and it only gets better every time I listen to it "Bible And A .44"... Okay, I definitely did this one dirty... I never in a million years thought it was THIS loved though. Like I mentioned above, some ballads from this album started to feel boring and wear on me after I listened to this album like a half dozen times. Unfortunately, this one was the most noteworthy example of that. It is so sparse in production and doesn't have much build to it. Imo the best ballad moments on this album are the ones that are a bit bigger, hence my high rankings for "Tell Me Something I Don't Know", "The Matador", and "When Lonely Calls". This one, as pretty as it is, simply pales in comparison. I would have absolutely rather seen "Workin' On Whiskey" in the top 5 over this one.

Had to make a whole entire separate post about this top 2 I am SHOOK by this finish!!!!!!!!!!! "Every Girl In This Town" is an amazing song, and the perfect song to represent this project as a single. It could have easily been my #1, as could have "The Matador". This melody is very reminiscent of Martina's peak years, as was mentioned repeatedly in the single thread. It may be a tad on the cliched and fluffy side, but it is just so nice to have Trisha back, and this song represents everything that is positive and awesome about her comeback. It sounds particularly fresh after waiting so long for new music from her, which is where a lot of the charm in this song lies! However, "The Matador" is such a damn FORCE of a song I can hardly contain my excitement about this one winning the entire rankdown! I do not recall a time when a song ever stopped me in my tracks and made me think as much as this one did the first time I heard it. I could understand this one seeming a tad boring because of the melody, but if you pay attention to the lyrics, this song is seriously EVERYTHING. The subtleties of the writing are too many to mention and do justice to their brilliance, but I particularly love how in the first chorus the man is lying in the dirt and the woman's crying that he's hurt, and then in the next chorus the man is lying in the dirt and the woman's crying that SHE'S hurt. Such a subtle, yet powerful, representation of how their love had changed over time, and how the dangerous lifestyle of the matador had adversely affected everyone around him. And you've gotta love when she calls herself the mother and the whore! The language use in this song is colorful and evocative, and just shocking enough to get the point across. And of course there are SO many lyrics that could be dissected and analyzed. I immediately started this one over the moment it finished the first time I heard it. Gretchen Peters, man Melodically, "Tell Me Something I Don't Know" takes the cake, but "The Matador" was aaaaaalmost my #1 for the lyrics alone!! It's pretty much neck and neck for being my favorite song on the album. Thanks for hosting, someguy!! This album was a very fun one to familiarize myself with. Honestly, this album helped improve my perception of Trisha as an artist, and now I'm actually excited to listen to all of her other albums! That's a feeling that listening to just her singles has never made me have!

Finally someguy thanks for hosting and can't wait for the rest of the series!!!! P.S. Trisha had two features on Don's last album which came out in 2015.

I meant to comment earlier that I was pleasantly surprised to see The Matador make the top-10 but damn! I would’ve never predicted it winning the whole thing. Even if I am the lowest ranker, make no mistake it was still one of my favorites on the album. I thought the concept was rather clever and I always love a good upset so I’m here for it winning.
