It was released in september of 2018, it charted in january 2019. It had nothing first week. TikTok can not claim responsibility for the surge it had at all. It wasn't even that big of a tiktok meme to start with, it pushed it over the edge if anything. Regardless, neither SDID or Sanctuary hit this level of peak streams, and with Walking, Joji actually has radio support now, especially with run getting that level of streams.

IIRC Slow Dancing debuted at #2 on the bubbling under when it was released, so, while it didn't do as much as Run or even Sanctuary, saying it did nothing first week is misleading.

He's literally their biggest artist, and they still give him the same promo treatment as Rich Brian.

Joji is literally carrying the label at this point. Sometimes I feel like they intentionally don't want him to get too big because he's then more likely to move labels.

^ He can't leave if he is still under contract. Example if he signed a contract to release 5 albums or the contract is length based (eg. 5 years). If the label 88rising doesn't want to let him go he can't do much until the agreement is met.

If the general public can get over the awful lyrics in “Intentions” I think it could have some staying power based on the beat. The beat on the song reminds me a lot of “Sunflower” or “Talk”.

Russ is hated because of his comments towards drug abusers, specifically Lil Peep immediately after his death. He criticised Peep and other rappers' drug glorification in a very disrespectful way that didn't sit well with a lot of the Hip-Hop community. Not to mention his massive ego, overhyping himself despite his sound being very basic white girl turn-up vibe music that anyone could replicate.

BTW, Joji should've hit #1 three years ago with this classic.

They did have other successful acts, and Rich Brian has some pretty big international success. Also Yellow not becoming a giant hit was painful

I love Rich Brian ("History" will always go hard) but his last album cycle really underperformed (honestly due to a lack of promotion from 88rising and it's rushed nature) so I'm very iffy on his position as a successful act internationally. I would love it if he could recover though.
