Artist: Keith Urban Single: "God Whispered Your Name" Label: Capitol Nashville/UMG Impact Date: March 2nd, 2020
News out of CRS today is a new Keith Urban single dropping next Thursday -- impacting the following Monday. It was performed at UMG's CRS luncheon for radio today. It's a ballad.

I read this too fast and thought it said Kenny Rogers instead of Keith Urban for some reason, and then I realized it's probably because "God Whispered Your Name" sounds like the kind of song title of something Kenny Rogers would record. All of that aside, I'm definitely very intrigued to hear this based on the title. Really hope we get something fresh and exciting from Keith here. I loved "We Were" and thought it was a nice return to form for him after a string of downright mediocre singles, but even if it failed to totally get him back on track with country radio.

^The only gospel sounding tune that Kenny Rogers recorded was his first country single in 1975 called Love Lifted Me (#19).

Hoping he serves us what I know he's capable of serving us with this one! Let this one be strong please (and based off the title I think it might be).

Gonna call it now. This will be his 41st top 10. The live version was good!

Chris August is a Christian artist. This makes me wonder how many Christian artists have written country hits? I know of one off the top of my head, Chris Sligh was a writer on Rascal Flatts #1 “Here Comes Goodbye”. I know Matthew West has been a writer on some album tracks for artists but not sure if any of his have been hits.

It seems like Dave had an album cut to far a country artist as well but don’t remember who it was.

Keith is one of them that has gotten better for me as his career has went on. As far as how I feel about him now, I think he's a phenomenal entertainer and has another 10-15 top 10 singles left in him. I feel a big debut coming with this one this Monday night. It's a great song!

It seems like Dave had an album cut to far a country artist as well but don’t remember who it was. Dave Barnes also co-wore “Craving You” for Thomas Rhett. It looks like he’s achieved quite a few album cuts too for Lady A, Hunter Hayes, Carrie Underwood, and more!

#10 on iTunes all genre already! The only country song better is the Restless Road & Kane Brown collaboration “Take Me Home” at #8.

His music is just so clunky these days. I kinda like the chorus melody, except for the weird emphasis on the end of every line gets grating after awhile (especially with the way the BGV are layered on those stressed syllables -- not a fan of how that was executed). The production feels too slick like what I've heard from occasionally coming across Christian music on the radio and it doesn't work for me here, and I wasn't feeling the verses. It kinda feels like they threw elements of RnB, Christian, and Country music genres into a blender and that's what birthed this song and it just doesn't come together for me. I like it way more than the likes of "Never Comin' Down" -- with ease -- but I definitely preferred "We Were" to this. His last single felt like a bit of a return to the classic Keith Urban sound, but this pivots right back to the funky mess of his last few years of misfires. Meh. I'm feeling pretty underwhelmed.

Not bad, I like the concept of the song better than the execution. I feel like production wise it doesn't sound right for the mood. .indulgecountry says slick and I agree, I think it needed to sound more organic. I Still this works ok for me and I'll probably grow on it. I miss his old sound but I do feel like he's been trying to go back to it a bit this time around. It does sound like something radio will take to so I'm not worried about it's chart prospects.

Different ears hear different things. This song is much more organic than most anything on his previous album. Acoustic guitar, Wurlitzer, Organ, live drums, the chorus while lush and poppy, is lifted by layers of vocal pads and not synth pads. This isn't my favorite Keith, but it will do fine at radio.

Keith's most sonically interesting single in a bit. That said the trend of men sing songs where they give god credit for their significant other continues to be bad and boarderline sexist

Matthew West has written songs for Diamond Rio, Montgomery Gentry, Steel Magnolia, Locash, Mallary Hope, Rascal Flatts, the TV show Nashville, and most notably "Feelin' It" by Scotty McCreery.

Most added song of the week with 80 adds. Also debuts this week at #43 on Mediabase and #28 on Billboard.

Finally had the chance to give this one a listen and it's definitely one of those "brilliant-idea-horrible-execution" moments. It's just so meh and clunky, all of his recent output is. Very disappointed in this and I don't see myself revisiting it.

I have to say after having listened to this a couple times I am really not a fan. Don't hate it but don't care about it either. Hope it goes away quickly tbh. Definitely a step backwards from "We Were"

I wanted to like this a lot more than I do. The best part, for me anyway, is certainly the melody. Keith's music lately (outside of "We Were") hasn't been as good as his previous material, and this unfortunately continues the trend.

I love Keith Urban but so far this one isn't doing a whole lot for me. I don't dislike it or anything, but i don't know, i guess it just doesn't really excite me much either. I still hope it can be a decent hit for him and i really hope we get an album announcement sooner rather than later.

This is holding a lot better on iTunes than “We Were” did. I have a feeling this will end up being a solid hit for Keith.

Yup, this is looking more and more like it’ll get Keith back on track at radio. Got a +157 spin gain in today’s update and is selling very well. I’m not the biggest fan of this song, but I really like the instrumentation and production. I think Keith tries to sound too “sexy” in his vocal delivery at times and the lyrics leave a lot to be desired. (sorry for the double post)
