1. Curiosity 2. Crush On You 3. Private Number 4. You Got It All 5. Somewhere Out There 6. Cross My Broken Heart 7. I Do You 8. Rocket 2 U 9. Make It Real 10. Sendin' All My Love 11. You Better Dance 12. The Same Love 13. Under Any Moon 14. Chip N Dale's Rescue Rangers Theme Song

Wow. I didn’t realize I knew a lot of their songs (or that they sang the theme songs from “An American Tail” and “Chip N Dale”).
I finally put a name to one of their songs last year when Christina Milian sang “Make It Real” during one of those Song Association games:

That Milian bit is random but awesome.

We’ve got 3 lists so far! Should we tag people, like all in the R&B/Hip-Hop group in the Tag List thread?

Add anotherone to the batch. This is Glam R&B and loads of fun.
also tag 80's and R&B lovers. They probably would join up.

I will start the true reveal this weekend, but I am going to post a few things to lead into the rankings. The Jets are a family band from Minneapolis who first performed as Quasar starting in the late 1970s. Manager Don Powell discovered them and encouraged them to change their name. They became The Jets, named after the Elton John song “Bennie and the Jets.” The main line-up featured eight of the siblings. Their self-titled debut album was released in 1985. As we’ll see during these rankings, many of their singles did better on the R&B charts than on the Hot 100. An episode of Unsung about the BP and touched on that fact: MiragoGeorgebornDoc Indie Party RockSoulsista

Today I am posting a bonus track as we lead into the actual rankings. One single of the few singles by The Jets I didn’t include in this rankdown is the song “Special Kinda Love.” It was released in 1990 as a single off their initial greatest hits album, and it peaked at #83 on the R&B Singles chart. It didn’t chart on the Hot 100. It has that Babyface/LA Reid sound that was big then, though it was written and produced by Vassal Benford. In hindsight I probably should have included it in this rankdown, but I was trying to keep the number of songs down.

We ended up with 7 lists! 14The first reveal (and last in our ranking) is a cover song done for The Jets’ holiday album Christmas With The Jets. The holiday album was released in 1986. It was their second album released and contained 9 new holiday songs and this cover of “Somewhere Out There.” Their version was released in the same year as the famous duet version from An American Tail. Average ranking - 12.43 Highest ranking - #10 Lead vocals - Eugene and Moana George - 10 born - 13 Doc Indie Party Rock - 14 Mirago - 13 jenglisbe - 12 Soulsista - 11 Ky - 14

13The next song up is “You Better Dance.” This was the lead single off The Jets’ 1989 album Believe. It didn’t perform nearly as well as many of the singles off their first two studio albums and peaked at #59 on the Hot 100 and #73 on the R&B chart. This song has a real Prince/Jam & Lewis vibe, which makes sense as The Jets were based in Minneapolis. This is the one that grew on me most as I listened to these songs for my rankings (I initially had it in last place). I love the video, too. Average ranking - 11.71 Highest ranking - 9 Lead vocal - Haini George - 14 born - 12 Doc Indie Party Rock - 11 Mirago - 9 jenglisbe - 11 Soulsista - 12 Ky - 13

I’ll do more reveals tomorrow, but in the meantime here’s another clip from their Unsung:
Like many acts, they were having hits yet not making money.

12The next song on our rankdown is The Jets’ version of the Chip N Dale’s Rescue Rangers theme song. Their version was not used on the actual show, but they recorded a full-length version that was used on a Disney soundtrack and (I think) the home video release. Unhinged will love the sax solo. Average ranking - 10 Highest ranking - 3 Lead vocal - LeRoy George - 3 born - 11 Doc Indie Party Rock - 13 Mirago - 14 jenglisbe - 8 Soulsista - 10 Ky - 11

The next four songs were all very close in their averages. 11Just missing our top 10 is “I Do You,” the second single from the 1987 album Magic. This single peaked at #19 on the R&B chart and #20 on the Hot 100. The production reminds me of several songs from that time. This is the first song on our rankdown on which Elizabeth sang lead. She sang lead on most of their big hits. Average ranking - 8.86 Highest ranking - 4 Lead vocal - Elizabeth George - 8 born - 9 Doc Indie Party Rock - 4 Mirago - 8 jenglisbe - 10 Soulsista - 13 Ky - 10

11. I Do You Damn first big Top 5 loss. The percussion perfect R&B vibe of the late 80's. Those synth intros remind me of songs from the Time. Love the breakdown too.

The production is a nice representation of that time for sure. For me the melody doesn’t hit as hard as it does on some of their other hits,

We now enter the top 10. 10Next up is “The Same Love,” another single off the Believe album. It was written by Diane Warren and peaked at #87 on the Hot 100 in 1989. Expose did a version of this song on their 1992 self-titled album. I liked this ballad. Not surprised to see it go at #10 though. Familiarity may have helped because for me it feels inferior to the ballads of theirs I know, but not sure how much of that comes from nostalgia.

9The next song to be revealed is “Under Any Moon.” This was a collaboration between The Jets and Glenn Medeiros. This song was also written by Diane Warren and appeared on The Jets’ 1989 album Believe, as well as the soundtrack for The Karate Kid Part III. Former Supremes member Mary Wilson covered this song on her 1992 album Walk the Line. There was a clear sort of divide in our rankings. Average ranking - 8.29 Highest ranking - 4 Lead vocals - Glenn and Elizabeth George - 5 born - 4 Doc Indie Party Rock - 10 Mirago - 11 jenglisbe - 14 Soulsista - 7 Ky - 7

10. “The Same Love” Exposé. Hmm... that made me wanna search for it. 4:00 minutes later. Something about the different vocals gave the songs two different vibes. Both pop ballads, but I felt the production was stronger on the Jets original.
9. “Under Any Moon” I loved this uptempo song. It felt like a first time listen , but top 10 worthy. Also I got "La Isla Bonita" vibes from the percussion and guitars. I could easily mix those two songs into one.
