Thalia is a singer/songwriter, actress, author, fashion designer, business woman and social media influencer. She is Mexico’s most famous telenovela actress, with legions of followers around the globe. Thalia has had 28 Top 10 singles – 15 of which went No. 1 – and she has sold close to 45 million records worldwide, making her one of the best-selling Latina artists of all time. Queen of Latin Pop is considered one of the “Top 25 Powerful Latinas” by People En Español. She’s collaborated with notable artists like Marc Anthony, Michael Bublé, Tony Bennett, Robbie Williams, Maluma, Natti Natasha and more. Some of her most successful singles of all times include “Te Perdiste Mi Amor”, “Estoy Enamorada”, Equivocada”, “Desde Esa Noche” & “No Me Acuerdo”.
Mexican singer Thalia kicked off 2020 by releasing “Ya Tú Me Conoces” with sibling duo Mau and Ricky, but she has many plans for this year including hosting Premio Lo Nuestro (for the first time) and more music.
Thalia has had an incredible and versatile trajectory, filled with success and followed by millions of loyal fans throughout her 30-year career. And, during a conversation with Billboard, Thalia looks back in time to detail her musical style, why she's transitioning from pop to urban, her new song with Mau and Ricky and more.
How has the transition from pop to urban music been for you?
I feel that urban music is the new pop. It reminds me of The Latin Explosion era when we all wanted to do the English crossover and the same goes for the urban today, to be able to merge your personal style with urban beats is amazing. I think this beat allows all genres to be unique because it is a very generous genre. In my case, I always liked to mix different sounds like, for example, at the beginning of my career I was very pop but it gave a touch of rock.
And this change is felt in the new collaboration with Mau and Ricky tell me a little more about how this collaboration came along?
I do have a fabulous chemistry with Mau and Ricky. I have known them for years as songwriters and now that they are already singers, they sent me this song during my new musical research and I loved it. Really, “Tu Ya Me Conoces” is a song that is about being yourself because you don’t have to change for others.
Your first album is turning 30 years old, how you feel when you look back in time?
For me music is everything, it is something that has healed me, has helped me to free myself, to understand love and life. It’s my salvation tool and I am very happy to be able to continue making music from here standing in constant change growing and sharing.
You have two children; do you think any of them will follow your steps in music?
My daughter loves music. She enjoys it a lot, there is no day that goes by without creating a playlist. But they have more on the side of graphic design, they digitally paint. My son is very involved in the world of gamers but really what they want to be, as a mother, I support them.
Do you really miss doing a heartbreaking ballad?
I love them, and I miss them a lot. And, I know that many of my fans love that side of me. This past year, I’ve been in the studio creating new songs and there are quite a few surprises on the way.
A few hours after releasing her new single Tímida, Thalía received an incredible gift from Jennifer Lopez that had her jumping with excitement. The mother-of-two sent her friend a gilded box that looked like it was made of mirrors with the name JLo encrusted with stones. When opening the luxurious piece, there were two stunning pairs of shoes, one in red and the other in cream. Arod's fiancée recently launched an affordable footwear line with DSW and wanted to share the excitement with her beloved friend, who surely will not take long to wear them very soon. “Awww a small gift, thank you very much my friend. Beautiful, sexy and wonderful ... elegant. Oh, I love these! Thank you my girl, yayyy,” Thalía is heard saying in an unboxing video she shared on her social platform. Of course, this is not the first time the two Latina divas have shown great affection for the great friendship they have. Last January, they delighted their fans with fun photos from Jennifer’s pre-Super Bowl party. Through her social account, the wife of Tommy Mottola shared a photo of the epic reunion. "Latinas in da house," she captioned the photo of herself and the Bronx-native looking radiant as ever.
Thalia is outraged by the orders given by Mexico’s President, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, amid the global coronavirus pandemic.
“We’re going to keep living life as usual,” López Obrador said in a video message on Sunday (March 22). “I’ll tell you when not to go out any longer,” he added, explaining that COVID-19 is only its first phase in the country. “If you’re able and have the means to do so, continue taking your family out to eat … because that strengthens the economy.”
Thalia, who emphasized that she’s not one to get involved with politics, shared a nearly two-minute-long video on Instagram, pleading with the Mexican population to stay home.
“What is mentioned in a part of this video is not right! Stay in your house,” she said. “We all understand that our heroes, medical professionals (doctors, nurses, pharmacists, etc.) who are dealing closely with this day by day and others with essential jobs, indispensable in this situation, have to leave their homes. But we who are not health professionals have to be considerate of them, be responsible and isolate ourselves as much as possible.”
On Monday (March 23), Mexico had 367 confirmed cases of coronavirus in the country with a total of four deaths, deputy health secretary Hugo Lopez-Gatell said, according to Reuters.
The cover of Thalia's Arrasando featured a rosy close-up shot of the singer sweetly biting her nail. "'Arrasando' was the name of the one of the songs I wrote at the time," Thalía says today. "The chorus was super powerful. It was like, 'Let's just be positive. Let's take advantage of everything. Let's arrasar con la vida. Let's take it all in.' I knew immediately that would be the name of the album."
Thalía took risks on Arrasando that paid off, like rapping on the title track. "It was easy and organic," she says of spitting those empowering lines. "It was like a train of thought, flowing from one idea to another." Like "Arrasando” itself, the album took on a prominently techno sound that is best reflected in the stunning "Regresa a Mí.” "There's an element of this lost world of fleeting love that captures the listener," Thalía says. "That track is atmospheric, nostalgic, and it's one of the strongest on the album. Today, it's an anthem."
The soaring ballad "Entre El Mar y Una Estrella," penned by Mexican songwriter Marco Flores, became Thalía's first No. 1 on the Hot Latin Songs chart. "I remember I was screaming and crying from being super excited," Thalía says of that memory. "I was like, 'Wow! What a blessing.' I was looking for a different way to portray Latin music," she says. "When [Flores] called us to the studio and we heard it, it was magical and timeless. It's a classic like the Lion King. It was exactly what I was looking for. It's one of those songs that everyone knows and loves: the kids, la mamá, el papá, la abuelita."
Arrasando peaked at No. 1 on the Latin Pop Albums chart and No. 4 on the Top Latin Albums charts and also consolidated Thalia’s popularity with the LGBTQ+ community.
"They have always been supportive of my career since the beginning. I've stayed true to my message in my fashion, my statements, and my music: to be yourself, to love yourself, to not be afraid to put yourself out there no matter who judges you, and to believe in yourself no matter the obstacles in the way. Arrasando consolidated that message and strengthened my relationship with the community. I'm very proud of this album."
Has she always been this thick? I never noticed. Niceee. Also, I hope those clown lips are just because of lipstick magic and she didn't f**k with her lips. She looks amazing regardless tho. Her body is 🔥🔥🔥🔥 and she has aged incredibly well.
