I really don't understand what is continuing to carry "Tell That Girl To Shut Up" and "People Have The Power".... Of course it was me. You can thank me later.

finally done with these extras:
What Is There To Smile About? - Close Lobsters So many bands that went unsung. This song is not too versatile in melody, but still ok for a preview. Sounds like one that could have cruised in over to the 90's and might have found better success.
When I Feel This Way - APB: This one is funky. Great new wave vibes and vocals. Could have been Kajagoogoo or Haircut 100. I would have put this one super high on my list. Gonna keep this one for myself.
Winning Side - Oingo Boingo: Speaking of Haircut 100. This one has some "Favorite Shirts(Boy Meets Girls) guitars going on during the verses. Oingo Boingo has so much great music out there. Think I'll pull out "Just Another Day" and give it a spin. Can't recall if I have this one so download? Check.
Wish Away - Wonder Stuff Not bad. Music has some cool psychedelic vibes, and I like his vocal tones, but his delivery isn't the strongest. The verses are kinda rough.
Wishing Well - Terence Trent D'Arby: This is another one of those songs that separates me from the rest of the board. I don't like it one bit. For me its like a hop, skip ,and jump from Milli Vanilli. The melody is also kinda silly sounding. pass.
Without Love - Tonio K Could have been a Bruce Springsteen songs, and just needed Bruce vocals to make the cut. For me its sacrificial RD stuff.
You Have Placed A Chill In My Heart - Eurythmics: This band kinda settled in nicely with the late 80's Sophisti-pop sound. Human League went the same route too and still sounded great. I probably would have ranked this higher than most of you, but lower than maybe a couple of members, but still in the 30's range. I like these kind of love theme lyrics.
Young Manhood - Wild Swans: This one is pretty decent on my list. Kinda got that New Wave Motwon vibe like "Mirror Man" or Wham!'s sound. Come to think of it I like it. It's a keeper for the archives.
"Cellophane" - That Petrol Emotion Can't say I'm crushed this didn't make the actual top 100. It's pleasant enough, but still kinda boring.
"Slow Turning" - John Hiatt Torn apart on this one. It has a cool John Mellencamp heartland vibe , but God those vocals need a tune up. Give this guy a drink of water.

#70: "Just Too Bloody Stupid" - Close LobstersBetter than the extra. This one barely missed my top 50, but it's mostly for the accent in his vocals. The music was just alright, but very uplifting at the same time. #69: "Put This Love To The Test" - Jon AstleyVery cool bass line gets this one top 40 free pass. I also always dug Jon Astley's vocals ,and comon this is extremely catchy. #68: "Up There, Down There" - Patti Smith This song did absolutely nothing for me, but my bottom tank was also already overstuffed. I would have preferred Patty Smyth from Scandal. #67: "Tomorrow People" - Ziggy MarleyThis was pretty cheesy, but I would have liked it with "john" UB40 on vocals. #66: "Heaven Knows" - Robert PlantPULSE sure is relentless when it comes to Mainstream Rock cruise overs. I do the same too with the Alt cruise overs, but I'm still pretty sure this song would have gotten top 20 action if it didn't have Robert Plant in the singing credit. #65: "Back On The Breadline" - Hunters & CollectorsThis started off pretty low on my list til I finally felt the song's melody start to flow nicely through my bones. I like that it ends up just about where I ranked it. #64: "Maybe It Won't Last" - WoodentopsI felt this song was a nice NRGetic bouncer, but still could have been better. The pianos are the stand out. #63: "Victoria" - The Fall The music was more special to me that the guy's vocals. The guitars had a retro Britpop vibe. Parts remind me of some Paul Revere and The Raiders that's why it made my top half. #62: "For The Singer Of REM" - FirehoseI can hear the R.E.M similarities, but other than the guitar parts it misses the mark and the melody goes out the door. They could have named it "For "john" R.E.M" #61: "When The End Comes Before" - Rave-Ups More hotstepping Bass Lines. This was more guitar oriented and I thought could have nicely slipped into mainstream Rock territory too. #60 : "Love Will Tear Us Apart" - SwansI thought I wasn't gonna like this, but than I recognized the Joy Division song. What made it work for me was his vocals. #59: "Killer Moon" - T-Bone Burnett How did this borefest make it this high. I hated the chorus , because it just leaves you hanging. #58: "Away" - FeeliesThis didn't do much for me, but it still squeezes its way into the range of songs I find decent. #57: "Tell That Girl To Shut Up" - Transvision Vampoh comon' gimmi a break. This is such a Valley Girl Josie Cotton wonder jam. What's the difference between this and a Bangles rocker? I know who I'm taking with me ,and who I'm leaving behind when I get my 1983 time machine up and working. #56: "Get Started, Start A Fire" - Graham ParkerProbably the second song I ever heard from this guy? Decent enough to make my top 50, but not every memorable.

Mirror People is such a jam, interested to see where All In My Mind ranks in 87.
Crystal Palace is another one of those discoveries that sounded like a perfect song to hear in that summer of '88.

People Have The Power is still as oddly timely for 2020 as it was in 1988.

I saw it on CMJ's chart in the beginning of 88. how high? only songs that ranked 12 or higher (on any chart) made the cutoff...but after the newly discovered Hard Report issues, it should've been 10 or higher...that's why i'm featuring the songs that SHOULD have made the list of 100 as "special extras"

Well, we still got more Sinead to go, lol.

let's continue taking a closer look at some of the songs that should've been included (& would've if i'd been able to see the charts for certain weeks earlier) in our rankdown...here's today's SPECIAL EXTRA:
"My Bag" - Lloyd Cole
Coming from his 3rd (& final) album with The Commotions, this song reached 13 on Billboard but all the way to 7 on the Hard Report. Lloyd has worked with Matthew Sweet, inspired a song by Camera Obscura, and was ranked tied for 11th (with Alice Cooper) by Golf Digest's for their top musician golfers list. I would've ranked this one quite highly.

#55: " Breakaway" - Big PigInteresting song. I remember seeing it on the Hi NRG charts, but never seen the music video. The bass line was the Hi-NRG part of the song. Love the shoutouts, and her vocals were good too. The chorus kinda just gets lost in the rest of the song's melody, but the synths kept the beat alive. #54: "Mirror People" - Love & Rockets The most Billy Idol song I've heard from this band yet. Also has the most heartbeat. #53: "Crystal Palace" - The BibleCute little Britpop melody. Upbeat and catchy with sort of General Public sound to their music. Never heard of this band. Where they Christian Modern Rock? #52: "Jump In The River" - Sinead O'ConnorThis has been the best batch of Sinead songs I ever previewed. Didn't tank any of them. I liked the other song even more. The version without "jane" rappathon" of course. #51: "People Have The Power" - Patti SmithThis was a much better song that that other one. It's alright in melody and her vocals fit the music. The chorus shines best. *Now it's my turn to ask? What in the world compelled you all to keep Tracy Chapman in the top half? Was it her uplifting catchy vocals or her fierce guitar twangs.

extra: "My Bag" - Lloyd Cole That's a shame cuz I would have loved to rank this one. easy Top 50 too. BTW where has this one shown up before? more extras:
I had to open up every one of these songs on youtube just to be able to copy and paste the artist name and songs. Dreams So Real - Rough Night in JerichoLike that intro. Gets right into the beat. Not too different than the Lloyd Cole song. A lot of Spanish Rock of the time had a similar guitar driven style. Buckwheat Zydeco - Why Does Love Have to be so SadWTF on the artist name. I didn't hate the song tho. Didn't get much Modern Rock vibe, but where else are they gonna stick it? Keith Richards - Take It So Hard - from Talk is CheapThis should have stayed in Mainstream. It's ok. not a fan of Keith's vocals. The guitars and pianos sound like Steven Van Zandt fun. Steve Earle - Copperhead RoadThis wasn't so bad for Country song. Steve's vocals are kinda rough, but the song has some Bon Jovi Country rock vibes. I don't need it on a Modern Rock chart tho. Reckless Sleepers - If We Ever Meet AgainGot some Tom Petty meets Icehouse vibes with this song. Pleasant enough melody for my mid 50's

90. Forgotten Town (83): The music had some interesting synthpop elements, but then the melody, the vocals, and sorta Lion King / choir sounds gave it a clusterfuck vibe that I couldn't get... 89. Another Kind Of Love (97): I can see what he was going for, but he missed the target. Instrumentation was halfway what it needed to be, vocals were unremarkable, and that melody was bad (what chorus is this?). Clear bottom 5 to me. 88. Jesus Christ (54): This was a clear departure from typical U2, but I appreciated the harder, speedy sound, and of course the great vocals. Sounded fun anyway. Good discovery :) 87. Intoxication (88): At least this had some melody, and 80s synthpop vibe, plus the female chorus compensated the (extremely) limited lead vocals. 86. Tumblin Down (92): Not horrible, just too forgettable and unremarkable in music and melody. 85. Trash City (70): The more I heard it the higher I ranked it. The main melody and the mix of guitar and percussion really got me. I wished it had a bit more variety in the main melody, but this was an ear worm of a discovery. 84. Don't Go (82): I liked the melody more than their other song, so happy this got higher in the RD as well. I got an early Bruce Springsteen vibe with the spoken verse... I just needed a bit more oomph in the song to rank it higher. Music (sax included) and vocals were good enough. 83. Sweet Fire Of Love (40): Another good discovery that included U2. Typical strong U2 guitar/drum/vocals combo. I just wanted the buildup to take me to a better chorus... 82. Wild, Wild West (18): This was a big hit back home, and a song that, back then, took me a bit to get but once I got it, it made all the way to the top 3 in my personal chart. I still like it and find it quite fun and catchy. I wasn't sure how high to rank it as I felt it could be too pop, but the I thought it got enough elements for a modern rock tune. I assumed I was gonna be one of its highest rankers, but hoped it could at least make the top half :( 81. Wheels Turning (45): Interestingly, when I first heard it I put it in my 70s, but the more I heard it the more I got it. It sounded unique and forward-sounding for an 88 song, with the super catchy synth hook and the electric guitar sound. Plus, the vocals were good. And that Vogue attempt in the video was something else, too 80. Globe of Frogs (98): I didn't get this at all. Vocals were almost annoying at points, melody was scattered, and music was too messy for me. 79. Aches & Pains (67): I really liked the verses in terms of melody, vocals, and instrumentation (all quite mid-80s pop), but the chorus took it down several notches. It had more of a pop than alt vibe... interesting discovery. 78. King of Emotion (68): Idem. 77. I've Got A Feeling (85): I liked the music, but the melody wasn't that appealing to me, especially in the chorus. 76. Sometimes (39): Aw.... This was my favorite song by them in this RD. Nice melody, including the strong drum-based verses and the more sing-along choruses. 75. Rev It Up (66): I guess this was the time to get rid off my 60s lol This had a nice classic-rock sound to it... I would've ranked it higher in an Active RD. 74. Birth, School, Work, Death (58): The music was pretty strong here, and that alone made me consider it for a spot in the top half. However, the overall melody wasn't strong enough for me to do that. Still, I think it had enough merits to place a bit higher... 73. So Excited (79): I was a bit torn with this one, as I did like the melody quite a bit, but it just felt out of place in this RD. It was good to discover a song of an ex-General Public, though! 72. I Need A Man (51): I'm a huge fan of Annie and Eurythmics, so I tried my best not to tank this song, as it's always been one of my least favorites from them. It was better suited for this RD than for a pop one, so that helped, but yeah, I cannot complain at this being placed here, as at some point I had it in my 70s as well. They've done so much better than this. I'm legit surprised it was that high in the YE chart. Don't Ask Me Why was so much better in 1989 and should've been THAT big of a hit... 71. Paradise (74): This was good in terms of instrumentation and had an ok melody in the verses, but chorus was underwhelming.

70. Just Too Bloody Stupid (61): I like that guitar-led melody in the first few seconds quite a bit, and the nostalgic vibe of this song. Plus the vocals were good enough to make it this high for me. 69. Put This Love To The Test (19): This song randomly became a big hit (2-week #1) in our #2 pop station, and made it to the 20s in my personal chart. I hadn't heard it in more than 25 years!! And it was a great trip back in time, with good childhood memories and reminiscence of sophstipop 80s music (ala Eurythmics, Love and Rockets' So Alive, Thompson Twins, etc.). Loved the synth and strings/guitar sound combo, the backing and lead vocals --John's unique and sexy vocals made it stand out. Sorry to lose my second top 20 :( 68. Up There, Down There (96): I just didn't get the melody, let alone the vocals. Clear bottom 5. 67. Tomorrow People (48): This had some good rotation in pop stations back home, and the 20s in my personal chart. It still sounds catchy, uplifting and fun as before. Reggae needn't be tanked every time, you know? 66. Heaven Knows (63): After my first listen of all songs, I placed this in my top half, especially thanks to the production, vocals, and guitar solo. However, after a few more listens the melody wasn't as strong as other candidates for my top half... 65. Back On The Breadline (14): This was my 3rd favorite discovery in this list. I really liked the vocals here, which worked very well with the melody and instrumentation, especially in the pre-chorus and chorus. The added brass sounds were cherry on top. Sad for another melodic top 20 loss :'( 64. Maybe It Won't Last (38): Once again, I liked this band's combination of synth/piano and guitar sounds, plus the drums here, and strong vocals. And this is the type of melodic speedy, high-energy rocker I like. Wish they had made the top half with one song at least. 63. Victoria (93): I thought I was gonna like the song a bit more with that initial melody, but then it didn't go anywhere for me especially in the chorus and the vocals weren't that appealing either 62. For The Singer Of REM (73): This had a good enough melody to escape bottom quarter, but nothing interesting or unique enough to rank it higher. I found Sometimes more instant and interesting. 61. When The End Comes Before (42): Another pretty good discovery with quite strong melody to me, and with instrumentation and vocals reminiscent of earlier 80s music and artists (eg a bit of Howard Jones)

"Freddie's Dead" - Fishbone
After a debut album & a couple of EPs, Fishbone released the Truth & Soul album in '88 & this Curtis Mayfield cover was the lead track. This version reached #6 on the Hard Report.

we're going to get started on the top half here pretty soon...starting off we have our next tie...unlike the song winning the tie, #50 didn't have any Top10 rankings (but was close) ... on the other end, it only has one bottom 10 (& just barely)

Two jams, I've always loved the video for Put Your Hands On Me. I do find it very interesting that David Lowery of CVB has basically had 3 three number ones with this, "Pictures Of Matchstick Men" and Cracker's "Teen Angst (What The World Needs Now)".
