Love Balloon Man, the video is very cool. Nice to see the MTV PostModern watermark by the side, the show which was the daytime version of MTV's 120 Minutes in the '80s if I recall correctly. MTV's Top 20 Alternative Videos Of 1988 (as presented on 120 Minutes, but in spoiler form as there are still some songs here to come): {Spoiler}20. Cocteau Twins – Carolyn's Fingers 19. Big Audio Dynamite – Just Play Music 12. The Mighty Lemon Drops – Inside Out 11. The Smithereens – Only A Memory 10. Sinead O'Connor – Mandinka 9. Love And Rockets – No New Tale To Tell 8. Extra
"Freddie's Dead" - Fishbone This song is kinda all over the place, but the guitars kept me listening. It's still pretty crappy. The "Freddy's Dead" line was honky. Was this on a Nightmare on Elm Street Part (?)soundtrack?
#50: "I Want Your Hands On Me" - Sinead O'Connor Who'would have guessed I would put this chick in my top 40, but a great song is a great song. BTW would have stuck the rapp version in my 70's. Either way the song barely cracks the top 50? maybe you all should have listened to the rappless version instead?
#49: "Eye Of Fatima" - Camper Van Beethoven This was a good song. The vocals were the stand out for me. It barely misses my top half, but nice to see it makes the top 50 here.
#48: "Balloon Man" - Robyn Hitchcock This gave me strong Beatles vibes. Very uptempo, and it has a fun chorus to sing to.
#47: "Be Still My Beating Heart" - Sting Here is a Sting song I never liked. It sounds like he totally lost his direction. I don't know his reason for going solo, but He should have just kept The Police together.
#46: "Sometime To Return" - Soul Asylum Not bad. Sounds like they were still searching for their sound. He still sounds rough around the vocal department too. Besides the first song I knew from them was "Somebody To Shove"

60. Love Will Tear Us Apart (52): I liked this cover. The original melody is still there, but the vocals and more guitar-rock vibe made it different enough. Good to see it this high. 59. Killer moon (65): very lennon-esque type of song. I initially had it around #80 as the verses and (main?) chorus but after a few more listens the post-chorus melody (‘we are not afraid’) got me hooked. Production was interesting enough too. 58. Away (77): I like speedy, energetic rock, but thus felt a bit too simple to me, especially in the chorus. 57. Tell That Girl To Shut Up (24): this was a good rediscovery. I hadn’t heard that tune in ages but it sounded very familiar when I heard it in this RD. This is another type of energetic but melodic rocker I like. Reminiscent of the best of the Go-Go’s or even the Bangles. Good vocals as well. Was hoping it could at least make the top 50 —or leave after my #100 >:( 56. Get started, start a fire (58): this and birth... stayed neck and neck in my ranking and this one ended up beating it -though just one spot. Good retro rock tune. 55. Break away (55): yes to a PPP!! I liked the Wild Boys-like intro, fierce lead vocals (love those female rockers with attitude like Siouxsie or Bork), make backing vocals and the polished production. I wished the melody had gone somewhere else stronger though, but overall good discovery. 54. Mirror Man (31): I didn’t know L&R were that eclectic. I only knew their So Alive, and these other tunes were quite different. I liked the post-chorus melody (inspiration for Hung Up? Lol) and the eclectic production with multiple sounds of gong and electric guitars (btw that riff reminded me a lot of the riff used by Enanitos Verdes in their big 1987 hit Por El Resto De Tus Días...) youtu.be/GenMRomnI8c53. Crystal palace (62): another song with a strong mid-80s, almost sophistipop vibe. Nice vocals as well. Took a few points off just for being a bit pop/ AC for the list, but a good discovery. 52. People have the power (15): awwww. This was one of my favorite discoveries in this RD. This time her vocals worked very well, and the classic guitar rock sound combined with the lyrics made it a standout to me. I didn’t know she had a hit in 88. Well deserved. Should’ve made it to the top half at least :( 51. Jump in the river (71): the correct song leaves first :) I just didn’t get this one, especially in terms of its monotonous melody. Hope her next songs are much higher!

5 class entries. Have always loved both those Wire tracks, along with Sidewalking and Postcards From Paradise. Peace In Our Time is good too.

A lot of classic fell tonight, but at least we in the top half now. #45: "Peace In Our Time" - Sun And The MoonCan pinpoint what it was, but i kinda dug this nice pleasant atmospheric intro here. The rest of the song was what made me rank it high. Really liked the melody they chose for the music to follow. Vocals were very 80's too. #44: "Sidewalking" - Jesus & Mary ChainThis band doesn't blow me away in any way shape or form. You could say I like the vocal overlapping in the chorus the best. Kinda sounds like a better Love and Rockets song. #43: "Kidney Bingos" - WireReally dug this. Crazy title for a wonderful little song. This is the type of aesthetic music T he 1975 , Pale Waves ,and others are bringing back. Wonderful vocals and melody in the chorus reminds me of another 80's hit. #42: "Postcards From Paradise" - Flesh For Luluhaha! I knew I would give this the highest rank. Even if only by one decimal. This is a certified classic and if you listen closely you might even get some "Pretty In Pink" vibes here and there. #41: "Silk Skin Paws" - WireI have no idea who this band was, but I really enjoyed both of their offerings in the list. Gave me some Los Prisioneros vibes. The melody the verses follow is eargasmic to me. it kinda brings the gothic and poppy vibes together wonderfully. A nice music hard-on all the way through. * "next set will get very interesting as several people finally get rid of their 100s,"I hope this includes me, cuz I'm due for some travesty cleansing asap. like before we hit the top 30.

let's continue taking a closer look at some of the songs that should've been included (& would've if i'd been able to see the charts for certain weeks earlier) in our rankdown...here's today's SPECIAL EXTRA:
"Anchorage" - Michelle Shocked
She was born in Dallas as Karen Michelle Johnston in 1962. Her stage name was derived by the nickname "Miss Shell-Shocked". The photo of her album above was of her being arrested during a protest in San Francisco at the 1984 DNC. As stated earlier, she lost her huge lesbian fanbase in 2013 when she started making an anti-marriage-equality speech during a performance in a San Fran nightclub. Her first album in '86 was recorded on a Sony Walkman while sitting around a campfire. This is her first single from the second album (first on a major label). It made to #16 on Billboard (#66 on Hot100), but all the way to #5 on the Hard Report. She's blocked her material on YT & mostly not on Spotify either.

50. I Want Your Hands On Me (44): I discovered this song in the early 90s when our music tv channel often played a segment of videos by her. I like the music, beat, vibe, vocals and the chorus melody.
49. Eye of Fatima (91): such a difference between this and Picture of Matschtick, which was one of my favorite discoveries in 89. EoF was a disappointment to me. I didn’t like the melody especially the main one... the way he sang eye of Fatima was cringeworthy to me. Hard pass.
48. Balloon Man (60): another song with a nice oldie singalong traditional rock vibe that I dug. A bit more melody in the chorus would’ve made me rank it higher.
47. Be Still My Beating Heart (49): this had a bit of airplay in a couple pop stations back home, and made it to the 20s in my personal chart. With time I’ve appreciated better the jazzy influence and multiple melodies here, but it’s just not among my top 10 songs by Sting.
46. Sometime To Return (32): the more I heard this, the more I liked it. Strong energetic rocker with good melody and vocal attitude. Pretty good discovery.
45. Peace in our time (72): so this was very close to at least 15 songs I ranked higher. I admit I under ranked it. I needed a couple more listens to rank it in my 50s.
44. Side walking (56): A song with an epic like production that got me hooked. I liked the instrumentation. Melody was good enough but again I just wanted a more interesting chorus.
43. Kidney bingos (86): another song that needed a bit more time to fully appreciate it. I like the main nostalgic melody and music vibe throughout the song. Felt a bit monotonous, which made me rank it this low -but should’ve ranked it about 20 spots higher.
42. Postcards from paradise (13): one of my favorite discoveries. Despite some vocal shortcomings, I loved the melody, instrumentation and vocal arrangements. Plus it got quickly stuck in my head :)
41. Silk skin paws (46): unlike KB, I gave more listens to this one (well the homosensual video helped) and I really liked the intricate but accessible instrumentation, with some new order vibe. I also appreciated the melody, which included some unusual keys. Very nice vibe overall, and an interesting addition to my downloads

"Anchorage" - Michelle Shocked That's probably the first time I heard something for her and it sure didn't blow me away. Ear numbing boring, but still slightly more uptempo that that other fire fueled hellcat who's music about cars makes me feel all giddy and alive in the inside.

up next the highest standard deviation of the rankdown...this song was in the Top10 until the last 3 lists that i entered & then it PLUMMETED all the way down here to #39
there are SIX top 15 ranks (3 of which are Top 10s)...two 100s...& two people clear their bottom 10 (not necessarily the same two who lose their 100s)
any guesses?

The Sugarcubes singles from this era were all solid and I've always enjoyed Ana Ng too.

Two 100s for "Ana Ng"? Did John Linnell kill your pets or something? Absolutely f**king ludicrous. Get your ears examined because no explanation would be sufficient here.

I expected No New Tale To Tell to be way higher. Shocking. According to CMJ, it was even bigger than So Alive.

Great first listen though! Had never even heard of this band before It's weird, meanwhile I'm a pretty big fan of some of their prior stuff (especially the album Steve McQueen) but I felt pretty underwhelmed by this one. I highly recommend that album though especially if you're into sophisti-pop.

I can only assume some of you saw the names Talking Heads and Depeche Mode and put them in your top 30 by default, because otherwise I don't know how those two career slumps are still in the running. Don't understand what makes this Voice Of The Beehive song so much better than "Monster and Angels", too.
