I definitely agree her first album feels very different from those that followed. Really only "Hometown Glory" and the bonus tracks feel like what I think of as Adele. Since they're all at the end, it feels like a natural segue to 21's sound.
I can't believe I stumbled on this ranking and witnesses these atrocious placements! 19 is her best album by far! So many nuanced notes and playful vocal delivery. Your bottom three are some of my top 3 of that album!
Out next at #12 is "That's It, I Quit, I'm Movin' On." This Sam Cooke cover was one of the three bonus tracks on deluxe editions of this album, and was a Top 30 hit on the Billboard Hot R&B Sides chart for Cooke when the song was released on Valentine's Day 1961, as well as a Top 40 hit on the all-genre Hot 100 chart. Adele's rendition gained some support in the form of a Top 5 rank from toomuchboy, but alas there was a deluge of bottom 5 rankings, including two last places from Caviar and Tim which was a big factor in preventing this one from doing any better in the rankdown.
"My Same" misses out on the Top 10, bowing out at #11. This song turned out to be more polarizing, drawing a bit more Top 5 support including a #2 from someguy, but also picked up a number of bottom 5 rankings, including a last place from toomuchboy, who gets rid of their last place song on the heels of a Top 5. This song also, interestingly, had us all ranking it in every position except for #1 and #3!
Kicking off the Top 10 is "Painting Pictures," the last of the three bonus tracks to leave us. This song managed to garner quite a bit more support than most of the songs we've seen exit thus far, picking up eleven Top 10 rankings, which include a sole Top 5 from wyckyd. On the flip side of that, there were six bottom 5 rankings, which include a bottom 2 from toomuchboy.
"Painting Pictures" is definitely one of my favorite songs off of this album, so I'm disappointed to see it leave us at #9. I'm joined in the Top 5 by Kanenrá:ke and samo🦕, but rankings were split down the middle, with eight bottom 5 rankings which include a head-scratching last place from Kris Kringle.
I know none of y'all are probably here, but it's high time to continue reveals! In fact, I'm gonna just get the rest of this album out of the way in the next hour and a half or so. Gather round if you're here!
At this point, I really don't have much commentary this album is painfully subpar overall in comparison to what came later from Adele, which the exception of a few songs. This song is an example of that. Adele's vocals aren't quite as engaging as they are in other songs on this album, and the production just plods along and repeats itself, causing the song to never go anywhere, lending to a dreadfully boring listening experience.
Kanenrá:ke is very much in disagreement however, as he becomes the first participant to lose their #1 song.
At least "Melt My Heart to Stone" was pretty much favored by us all, with all but two of us placing this in our Top 10! It also was a decisive victory for the #7 spot, finishing 30 spots ahead of "Best For Last."
