Back in the late 90s when I really started to pay attention to music, I remember "I Wanna Dance With Soembody" by Whitney was always a classic hit with good recurrent stats. But it seems in the last 5 years or so, it's taken on a life of it's own and has only grown. It's arguably more known than I Will Always Love You.
In the 2000s I remember "All I Want For Christmas Is You" was a classic Xmas tune but in the last 5 years or so it exploded. It's not just a "classic tune" it's the defining Xmas song arguably.
What are songs that have grown to become a bigger classic over time?

Journey - Don't Stop Believin' Bon Jovi - Livin' On a Prayer (has always been popular, but over the last decade has seemingly gone to a whole different level of popularity) Michael Jackson - Smooth Criminal (peaked at #7 but may get played now more than any of his five #1's from that same album) Toto - Africa (another big hit that never really disappeared but has now been meme'd into ubiquity)

At this point, it's already ingrained in our cultural DNA.

Smells Like Teen Spirit only peaked at #6 in January of 1992 and was #32 on that year's Year-End list, but I'd bet it's more well known than any of the 31 songs above it on the Year-End, with the possible exception of November Rain.

SLTS is absolutely not overrated. It's better than all of the songs that have done its style better simply by being the first to do it- none of the 'better' grunge or 90s alt songs would have existed without SLTS

I guess we could make the case for many Queen songs and their increasing popularity stateside. I was so shocked to learn that the iconic "Don't Stop Me Now" - one of Queen's signature songs nowadays, only peaked at #86.
Honorable mentions to "Under Pressure" (#29 peak), "I Want To Break Free" (#45 peak), and "The Show Must Go On" (didn't chart in the US and peaked at #16 in the UK).

It's a good song with immense cultural impact and influence that shouldn't be ignored but if I want to listen to Nirvana, I've regularly comeback to Heart-Shaped Box or Come as You Are or Lithium. I think I've only sought out SLTS a handful of times

It's still blasphemy this peaked at #34 on the Hot 100 Shrek 2 made this iconic for another generation And it has been used in several advertisements and other movies and shows
And most importantly, it is a bop

Now it's an 80s/classic hits staple.

Surprised no one has mentioned "Thriller" yet. It was definitely a hit in its own era, but it just continues to grow and at this point I think it's taken on a life of its own outside of Michael Jackson's career. I'd say it's his most well known song despite not even being one of his many #1 hits.
On the topic of holidays, Meghan Trainor's "Mom" is really starting to become a Mother's Day staple and every year it just keeps getting bigger. But it wasn't ever a single!

Baby Got Back is iconic though Baby got back only really got more popular though because of nickis atrocious disaster of a song called anaconda.
