Control was originally premiered live by Prince the same day it was finished when he played it direct from CD during a Minneapolis show. From there, it spawned a life of its own and turned out several club mixes that were supposed to have become a full-blown EP. And, yes, the original title used the full word but Warner Bros. made Prince change it because they feared retailers wouldn't carry an album with the first track having Pussy in the title (maybe track 11 or whatever but not track 1).

My top 4 was the top 4! Nice! And I even got one perfect ranking out of it with #4. I don't know that I see my top 3 order matching the rankdown order, though. Thinking it will be Gold/TMBGITW/Eye Hate U.
I was mildly harassed in my pm for ranking P. Control #12 but I don't dislike the song. It's just such a specific mood and that ain't the mood I'm in right now, lol.

I see Pulse prefer basic sacharine-friendly Prince... Eye Hate U for the win, and I'll be happy. When the album was released, Gold was one of my favorite songs... but I listened recently and it didn't age well.

I never thought that I could feel this way To fall in love was a table reserved for fools Say you're sorry if you wanna but it's all in vain I'm out the door sweet baby, that's right, we're through...Sir Benji : 1 God : 2 @antigonerising : 3 Linnethia Monique : 3 Ling-Ling : 3singingrulebritannia : 4 newpower : 4 SHOOTER : 4 Mirago : 4 Zach : 4 mamooshka : 5 tim : 7 Chelsea Press 2 : 7 .indulgecountry : 8 samo🦕 : 11 Eye Hate U was released as the album's official lead single in September 1995 and became Prince's last original song to crack the Hot 100 top-40 (peaking at #12); it peaked at #3 on R&B. For reasons unknown, the song's music video remained unreleased until 2018 (I assume WB was less-than-pleased with Prince's facial "SLAVE" tattoo being on prominent display). In a 2016 GQ interview, Carmen Electra confirmed the song was written about her.

Darn it you beat me to it because I was going to predict 3) Eye Hate U, 2) Gold, and 1) The Most Beautiful Girl in the World! I have some catching up to do but I'll swing back around here in a bit to post some thoughts.

Fun fact: The AMAs had a strict rule that all performances must be lip-synced so Prince chewed gum throughout his entire performance to make it obvious that he was being forced to. All these years it never occurred to me why he was chewing gum during that performance...now I know! I initially had "Dolphin" ranked a bit higher than I did, but for whatever reason I have a hard time getting past some of the lyrics in the song and that always holds it back some for me. Even with my top 5 ranking for "319" I didn't really think it would make it much further than it did, but damn that song is still such a jam...I probably could've even ranked it a couple spots higher. Glad to see I wasn't alone in liking this one as much as I do. "Billy Jack Bitch" is another song that even with my high ranking I wasn't expecting to see it do much better than leaving somewhere in the middle. How funny that mamooshka and myself were the two highest ranking participants for this song and yet both of us can do a 180 with the Kenny Rogers rankdown...like they couldn't be more different lol! I thought that "Endorphinmachine" stood a decent chance of making it into the top 5, but alas it might be a bit too loud for some. I ended up going back and watching some of his live performances of this song and he seemed to really get into this one. Anyways, wasn't at all surprised with the top 3 songs but I never really questioned that it would come down to "Gold" and "The Most Beautiful Girl in the World".

"Billy Jack Bitch" is another song that even with my high ranking I wasn't expecting to see it do much better than leaving somewhere in the middle. Billy Jack Bitch stood out in this album because it was a return to his late 80s sound IMO. Not single material, but still a jam.

When the day turns into the last day of all time I can say I hope you are in these arms of mine And when the night falls before that day, I will cry I will cry tears of joy 'cause, after you, all one can do is die...@antigonerising : 1 Linnethia Monique : 1 tim : 1 .indulgecountry : 1 mamooshka : 1 Mirago : 2Sir Benji : 3 God : 4 singingrulebritannia : 5 samo🦕 : 5 Ling-Ling : 6 Chelsea Press 2 : 6 Zach : 6 newpower : 7 SHOOTER : 9 The Most Beautiful Girl in the World was born after a Warner exec told Prince in 1992 that he was losing his touch by oversaturating the market with music. Prince countered with a challenge to prove who was right by requesting to release a single independently. Permission was granted and the single was released (by Love Symbol) on Valentine's Day 1993 via NPG Records in America, Edel Music overseas and distributed by Bellmark Records, an indie unit that also released the now-classic Whoomp! There It Is. Prince won the challenge with the song quickly becoming a top-10 smash in over 15 countries, including #3 on the Hot 100, #2 on R&B and #1 in the UK (his one and only single to do so). As of today, the song is still unavailable for download or streaming due to a plagiarism ruling by the Italian court system. Italian writers Bruno Bergonzi and Michele Vicino sued Prince in 1995 on grounds he plagiarized their 1983 composition Takin' Me to Paradise and, eventually, won. Everybody wants to sell what's already been sold Everybody wants to tell what's already been told What's the use of money if you ain't gonna break the mold? Even at the center of fire, there is cold All that glitters ain't... The single's B-side was a new record entitled Rock and Roll Is Alive (and It Lives in Minneapolis) (a direct response to Lenny Kravitz' (who sang backgrounds on Dolphin and Billy Jack Bitch) single Rock and Roll Is Dead).

"Gold" is absolutely epic. The guitar solo after the bridge is phenomenal. For me this is up there with "Purple Rain." Really glad that this won.
The radio edits that were made for this were all tragic. They all cut out the essential bits. There were at least 3 that I know of. The one on the commercial single is the most common one that omits the bridge and the guitar solo. The other two have the guitar solo and omit the 3rd verse and bridge.

I’m actually not that surprised by this result because “Gold” is a song that is classic Prince. It’s one that while I admittedly wasn’t all that familiar with until this rankdown did end up becoming one of my favorites and sneaked into my top 2...I only put “The Most Beautiful Girl in the World” as my top song if only because it’s the one that I grew up with the most from this album. As for the plagiarism charges, I’ve somewhat dived into it but remain rather ambivalent about all of that.
Feeling a bit more anxious about the albums going forward, but I made it a point to dive into Prince’s discography so I’m not about to stop here lol.

TMBGIW was my ringtone way, way back in the day. My phone rang one day while I was home and when it registered to my mom what song it was, she said "that's...vain. Really vain." *full minute of silence* "Wow, that is REALLY vain." The look of confusion on her face as she tried to come to terms with this apparently new discovery of just what exactly her daughter was still makes me laugh when i think about it. It wasn't even vanity that much, that just happened to be the only Prince song available in the Cingular (yes I'm that old) store at the time.
That hook melody is near-identical to the hook melody in Takin' Me To Paradise. Rather unfortunate :( It feels like a George Harrison-esque 'subconscious plagiarism'; I'm sure if he had been consciously aware of the similarity he would have either changed it or scrapped it.
Gold is nowhere near a signature song of his, but very lowkey, it deserves to be - it might be one of the most 'quintessential' Prince songs in his entire discography. The phrasing, the message that somehow manages to simultaneously be religious while also a middle finger to his label, the guitar solo, down to the layered fadeout at the end that feels like a subtle throwback to the end of Purple Rain. The only thing missing is a slick sexual reference, but otherwise he somehow managed to squeeze in every quality that makes Prince, Prince without sounding like he was trying too hard to chase his own shadow.

Enjoyed "Gold" a lot so I'm more than fine with this outcome, but damn the vocals he was serving on "The Most Beautiful Girl in the Word" are just IT. Love. Thanks for the continued hosting, SHOOTER. xoxo

It must be noted that the version of "The Most Beautiful Girl In The World" that is on The Gold Experience is re-recorded and is different in terms of some of the production and structure from the version that was released as a single previously. The version that we ranked here was the single version.
The re-recorded one is considerably different in both the production has more reverb and it feels a little more R&B ish and the section after the spoken bridge is different than the original.
This is the re-recorded one:
Prince also recorded a few other versions of the song that came out on the original The Beautiful Experience EP. The Mustang Mix has totally re-recorded vocals and is sung in his regular voice instead of in falsetto as the original was. The harmonies and backing vocals are exquisite coupled with the smooth and sexy production.
Mustang Mix
The Beautiful version is a House mix also with re-recorded vocals but the vocals are done in the style of the original but the backing vocals are different.
His then wife Mayte also recorded a version of the song with some slight changes to the pronouns and gender called "The Most Beautiful Boy In The World". It was on her Child of the Sun album.

Chile, I left that Mayte cover in the closet for a reason. As bad as it was, she still sounds better than some of today's pop gurls. The breathy delivery of the lyrics was a choice. I have heard bits and pieces of the album over the years and the productions themselves were good, but Mayte just wasn't.

I was under the impression we were ranking the album version since the single version/original mix is only available as apart of TBE and doesn’t appear on the album. It would have moved up a place on my list if that were the case. It’s still an amazing song regardless. All the remixes from the EP are amazing too
