Lil Wayne a pop star though, lmfao. He was the most “successful” Popular act of 2008, just like Eminem in ‘02 & Drake In ‘18.

For those who haven't checked out the whole feature, each year also has three Honorable Mentions, Rookie of the Year and Comeback of the Year, with select years also having an extra feature.

In what alternative universe was Billboard judging 2005. Kanye?? Mariah smashed the entire year. Biggest selling album. Multiple #1’s. #1 and #2 song simultaneously. I mean cmon.

How did Beyonce beat Christina Aguilera in 2003 when Christina was given the title of "Top Female Artist" that year?

^The feature isn't based entirely on chart performance; the explanation appears in the intro.

^Biggest Comeback of 2005. Madonna should have gotten that and Mariah Pop Star Of The Year. Madonna’s “Hung Up” debuted on the Hot 100 in November 2005. The album was released in December. Billboard’s tracking year ends in November so, essentially, there wasn’t enough time to gauge the impact of Madonna’s ‘comeback’ which is why she wasn’t given that honor. As for Carey having the ‘biggest comeback of 2005’, this would be correct considering the commercial failures of both the ‘Glitter’ and ‘Charmbracelet’ eras, not to mention the media was literally posing ‘TEOM’ era as a whole as her definitive comeback. Kanye West, technically, had the most acclaimed album of 2005 upon ‘Late Registration’s’ release and was overall huge across Pop culture. To be honest: 50 Cent, Mariah Carey, Kanye West or even Kelly Clarkson could have been 2005’s ‘Top Artist’ but they settled with West.

I think they didn't award 2005 to Mariah precisely because they had to feature her in the comeback section - '05 MC is the very definition of comeback.
They say Eric Clapton's "Tears in Heaven" was his highest-charting song in the comeback section for 1992. Grinds my gears when Billboard gets its own stats wrong.

By now, you've probably had a chance to at least dip into Billboard's 'The Greatest Pop Star by Year (1981-2019)' project. It was a labor of love on the part of the entire staff.
We thought you might be interested in some trivia based on the artists who our staff selected as our year-by-year pop star MVPs. Here are 20 fun facts about them.
First artist to repeat as a year's Greatest Pop Star: Madonna. The durable star earned the title in 1985 and again in 1989.
Artist with the shortest gap between appearances as a year's Greatest Pop Star: Janet Jackson. She repeated in 1993, just three years after first claiming the title.
Artist with the longest span of Greatest Pop Star rankings: Beyoncé. She first took the title in 2003 and took it again in 2014.
Youngest solo artist to rank as a year's Greatest Pop Star: Britney Spears. The icon was just 18 when she took the title for 1999.
Oldest solo artist to rank as a year's Greatest Pop Star: Beyoncé. The superstar turned 33 during the year of her second win in 2014. Runners-up: Jennifer Lopez and Drake, who were turned 32 while they led in 2001 and 2018, respectively.
Only artist to rank as a year's Greatest Pop Star both in a group or duo and as a solo artist: Justin Timberlake. He earned the title on his own in 2006. He had shared the title with his *NSYNC bandmates in 2000.
Only male artist to repeat as a year's Greatest Pop Star: Timberlake. The other two-time winners, for whatever reason, have all been women--Madonna, Janet Jackson, Rihanna and Beyoncé.
Most recent group or duo to rank as a year's Greatest Pop Star: 'N Sync. The quintet took the 2000 title. Between 1981 and 2000, seven groups (Blondie, Bon Jovi, Nirvana, Boyz II Men, TLC, Backstreet Boys and *NSYNC) took the title, but starting in 2001, it's been solo artists every year.
Most No. 1 hits (1981-2009) by an artist who was never a year's Greatest Pop Star: Phil Collins (7). Runners-up: Paula Abdul and Bruno Mars (6 each).
Artists who were a year's Greatest Pop Star but never had a No. 1 single on the Hot 100: Nirvana, Alanis Morissette and Backstreet Boys.
Only artist who was a year's Greatest Pop Star but never had a top five single on the Hot 100: Nirvana. The trio's highest-charting hit, "Smells Like Teen Spirit," peaked at No. 6.
Artists who were a year's Greatest Pop Star but have not yet won a Grammy: Blondie, Backstreet Boys, 'N Sync, Lopez, Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus
Artist who was a year's Greatest Pop Star and has the fewest career Grammy nominations: Cyrus (1 nod). Runners-up: Blondie, Lopez (2 nods each)
Artist who was a year's Greatest Pop Star who has won the most Grammys: Beyoncé (24). Runner-up: Kanye West (21)
Artist who was a year's Greatest Pop Star who has received the most Grammy nominations: Beyoncé (70). Runner-up: West (69)
Artist who was a year's Greatest Pop Star and has won the most MTV Video Music Awards: Beyoncé (26). Runner-up: Madonna (20)
Artist with the most MTV Video Music Awards who was not named a year's Greatest Pop Star: Peter Gabriel (13). Runner-up: R.E.M. (12)
Artists who were a year's Greatest Pop Star and have won an Oscar: Prince, Eminem, Lady Gaga, Adele
Solo artists who were a year's Greatest Pop Star and have died: Michael Jackson (died 2009), Whitney Houston (died 2012), George Michael (died 2016)
Members of groups that were a year's Greatest Pop Star who have died: Kurt Cobain of Nirvana (died 1994), Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes of TLC (died 2002)

I think 2005 should arguably have gone to Mariah Carey, both biggest comeback and biggest artist.
2009 is close, but I think the Black Eyed Peas should have taken it. 2010 was really Lady Gaga’s huge year – to me it was when her presence was at its most ubiquitous and widely known.
2019 a very strong case of course could be made for Lil Nas X.

6 #1s for Bruno Mars? Really? Jesus, Billboard. Can't even be as a lead artist either cos he was featured on 2 of his 7 #1s.

If you guys read the intro - you will see that this is not based on most #1's or any statistical calculation. Factoring in image, videos, live performances, cultural impact, headlines, controversy, etc. the writers made their picks.
If you want statistical calculations then you go to the artist of the year lists.

The significance of 1981 was that was the first year of combined "artist of the year" charts in the year end magazine.
Prior to that there was Male/Female/group charts only

2000 2003 They really paid Christina Aguilera dust. Also for them to give Janet Jackson 1993 over Whitney Houston who literally had the biggest superstar era of the 90s? That's ridiculous. Also, where the hell is Shania Twain? The biggest selling album of the 90s and she didn't even make it on this list. She literally laid the blueprint for Carrie Underwood and Taylor Swift and broke records, yet they gave 1997 to Puff Daddy. Yikes.

In 1984 Michael Jackson had the Thriller song and the Thriller video as well as the Victory tour with the Jacksons and an old single from 1973
1984 was the Prince breakout year, plus Lionel Richie had a good year too
Not picking MJ for 1984 was the correct choice
