Pussycat Dolls are not male - last time I checked. What? You’ve listed every Female AOTY via. BB since 1981. Rihanna was for 2006. 🥴 Also, AoB has Male singers in the group and are literally harmonising background vocals on every song.

The list I posted was intended to be female solo artists and female-led groups.
Female solo artists exclusively would be a different list

The list I posted was Artist of They Year if males were excluded - I will repost the female solo only list in a minute

My apologies for the prior list -- Since the prior list was causing controversy
Female solo artists only - no female led groups, no female only groups, no groups with males in them, no male solo artists
1981 Pat Benetar 1982 Olivia Newton-John 1983 Laura Branigan 1984 Cyndi Lauper 1985 Madonna 1986 Whitney Houston 1987 Whitney Houston 1988 Debbie Gibson 1989 Paula Abdul 1990 Janet Jackson 1991 Mariah Carey 1992 Mariah Carey 1993 Janet Jackson 1994 Mariah Carey 1995 Sheryl Crow 1996 Alanis Morissette 1997 LeAnn Rimes 1998 Shania Twain 1999 Britney Spears 2000 Christina Aguilera 2001 Jennifer Lopez 2002 Ashanti 2003 Christina Aguilera 2004 Alicia Keys 2005 Kelly Clarkson 2006 Rihanna 2007 Fergie 2008 Rihanna 2009 Taylor Swift 2010 Lady Gaga 2011 Adele 2012 Adele 2013 Taylor Swift 2014 Katy Perry 2015 Taylor Swift 2016 Adele 2017 Ariana Grande 2018 Taylor Swift 2019 Ariana Grande

The voice you hear on the hits is female On Don't Turn Around and Beautiful Life, there are male vocals too. They were like ABBA and Fleetwood Mac and Roxette.

Since the spirit of my first post is being ignored. I reposted the list to be female solo only rather than include all female groups or female lead groups. This should make it simpler and avoid confusion. And perhaps be the list people want more anyway. My apologies for the first list. Please read the second one instead

In 1984 Michael Jackson had the Thriller song and the Thriller video as well as the Victory tour with the Jacksons and an old single from 1973 1984 was the Prince breakout year, plus Lionel Richie had a good year too Not picking MJ for 1984 was the correct choice Well, I think it was close, because while he was at the tale end of the Thriller era and only minor success with the Jacksons reunion, the tale end for Thriller was HUGE. The Thriller video obviously was this huge cultural phenomenon, the album would continue to spend another 17 weeks at #1, he swept the Grammy's that year, etc... He still seemed to have a dominating presence.

Well...yeah... on the artist of the year chart in the magazine it went this way: 1 Lionel Richie 2 Michael Jackson 3 Culture Club 4 Prince The writers probably chose Prince for the impact of Purple Rain album & movie

Mariah should be 1990 not 1991, but it's hard to argue against Janet for 1990 Mariah had three #1 singles in 1991, and 1991 is when her debut album spent 11 weeks at #1. She also had a top album with Emotions that year.

Did the males in Ace of Base ever sing true lead? Roxette had big hits where the male was lead (“The Look,” “Joyride,” “Dangerous”). Fleetwood Mac had classic hits with a male lead, too; see “Go Your Own Way” and others. I wouldn’t consider that the same as Ace of Base in that I can’t think of a hit of theirs where the males were the lead vocalists.

Maybe, but then that would be violating their statistical/purely-based on the charts method, so I think it's better to be accurate than "fair" Interesting though that with the newer non-statistical list, they allowed artists to be listed for more than one year, but none were listed for two (or more) years in a row, when arguably cases could be made for this, such as Michael Jackson (1983-84), Lady Gaga (2009-2010), Adele (2011-12), etc.I think the reason why they don't really have two years listed for those situations is mainly due to the way album cycles function. Ed Sheeran for 2017 and Drake for 2018 managed to have album cycles that began perfectly at the top of the year, but take Taylor Swift for instance: she dominated August 2014 - August 2015 with 1989, which was released in 2014. It really wouldn't make sense to give her both of those years, even though she probably was bigger than Beyoncé in 2014—she simply didn't dominate for two years straight. Katy Perry dominated a similar August to August timeframe in 2010-11. I think they did a fairly good job at assigning the pop stars to years! I feel like their 2020 pick would have been Billie Eilish if the year were over right now, even though she released 2 songs this year.
