Submissions are now closed, but if anyone is in the middle of working on it and will for sure be done within the next 12 hours or so, I will still take it. And then the reveals will start. There are 18 lists right now. Zeebz

American Life was Madonna's 9th studio album released on April 21, 2003. The album was unique in that it featured deeply personal perspectives, views and observations from Madonna that reflected on modern life in America. The album was critical towards or reflected on an Americanised world based on the principles of Hollywood and standard or standardised global culture. The album also examined American dreams, expectations and illusions, and on other songs she explored more inward content and reflected on own identity as a person who has attained longevity in her career. The album was released just as the war in Iraq had begun, and therefore was received ambivalently by critics and the general public, especially after the title song's music controversial music video. The album has sold 5 million copies to date and got 2 nominations at the 46th Grammy Awards in 2004. Like her 2000 studio album, Music, Madonna enlisted the help of French DJ and producer Mirwais Ahmadzaï. Always interested in adapting herself and her music to the contemporary compositions, Madonna was inspired by the new Massive Attack and Lemon Jelly albums. The recording sessions started in late 2001 after the Drowned World Tour but filming for Swept Away and acting in the West End play Up for Grabs caused delays. To market the album, Madonna embarked on a promotional tour across the U.S. and Europe. One of these performances, presented at the Total Request Live studios in New York, was shown by MTV in a special named Madonna on Stage & On The Record. She also performed at the HMV store on Oxford Street, London to 500 people. She also did BBC One's Friday Night with Jonathan Ross and Top of the Pops and also at Tower's Fourth Street in Manhattan which was presented to around 400 people. A special private concert was done in France at a restaurant in association with NRJ Radio. Overhated! This has always been a jam to me and actually interesting compared to 90% of the ballads on the album.

I used to hate "I'm So Stupid," mainly for the beginning, but I would say I like it now despite still being my least favorite on the album. I actually heard it on the radio one time (in like 2013) and couldn't believe it.
"Nobody Knows Me" is another one I like but don't love. The Above & Beyond remix takes it, well, above & beyond for me. ;)

Then when the album clicked, this song in particular stood out to me. For my experience, it's the essence of the album. Not surprised to see it go first at all. Very surprised by Nobody Knows Me out so early! I figured that'd be a contender for top 3! I'm definitely losing any kind of closeness ranking on this one 😁

SHOOTER agreed in re: "Stupid." I didn't realize it was hated, lol. "Nobody Knows Me" was the only song I don't really care for on the album. I'm glad it was out early.

Ugh, totally let this one slip my mind! This album deserves better lol. Not too upset with any of the reveals so far, although I definitely thought “Nobody Knows Me” would be a little higher

If we were ranking the Reinvention Live version of Nobody Knows Me, it would have been my #1.
The performance is also a timely snapshot of Madge at the height of her power.

3 perfect rankings. #8 Mother and FatherThis was one of several songs Madonna recorded which addressed the death of her mother. This song was a way of letting go of the sadness and moving on and searching for a reason for her existence since the loss of her mother. This featured Madonna rapping during the bridge. This was never a single but was given a club release in 2005 and it peaked at #9 on the Billboard Club Play chart, making this the 7th consecutive top 10 hit from the same album. There were remixes by Peter Rauhofer and Johnny Rocks. Only the Peter Rauhofer mix got released on Peter's own Live @ Roxy Vol. 4 compilation in addition to the unmixed vinyl EP which had it in full and is still the only place to get it. The song was performed during the ReInvention Tour with the first verse of "Intervention" after the rap bridge. Surprised "Easy Ride" ranked that low. The song apparently just missed making the Madame X Tour setlist.

11. I’m so stupid (11): yeaahhhh. NOPE. This wasn’t for me. The clear black sheep of the album in tens of melody and cringe. The only song I often skip in the album.
10. Nobody knows me (7): I didn’t care much for the album version, but I listened to the Peter Rauhofer mix at a dance club and then it clicked. I downloaded the mp3 and then made a personal “radio edit” that made it to the top 5 of my personal chart.
9. Easy ride (4): why is this so low here?! This is my favorite album track of AL and in my top 10 album tracks from Madonna ever. I love the string laden production, her vocals, the melody. Overall a stunning ballad. And Tracy’s mix is also a pretty good one.
8. Mother and father (6): the production is a highlight in the album for me. Eclectic, dynamic, but also catchy. The bass line and melody in the prechorus always get me :) the ”I gotta give it up” melody makes me want to crank up the volume. It reached the top 5 of my personal chart. I know the rap is a choice, but at least it wasn’t as cringy as AL.

Pleasantly surprised that Intervention is still in the running and was the highest ranked non-single.

With the last album track out, we have just 5 of the singles left. I will reveal all 5 later today. These are in alphabetical order and not in the order in which they actually finished.

7. X-static process (10): this is a very cute ballad. I used to like it a bit more, especially during the time of release of the album. It felt a bit too simple this time around, but I still like it.
6. Intervention (8): this is an even nicer ballad. I really like the melody and harmonized vocals in the chorus, which contrast nicely with the simple, acoustic verses.
