"Up To The Mountain" was one of her best covers the first time she did it in 2007. It's still one of her best in 2021, possibly even better with her newfound grit and life experience.
Vocals like that are why she deserves her spot among the greats like Aretha, Whitney, Mariah, etc.

I feel like Up To The Mountain got away from her for a few seconds in that, which kind of short circuited the whole performance for me. The "But I hear you're sweet voice, oh Lord, oh Lord come and then go" from the Idol gives back performance was one of her greatest live vocal moments ever...and during that Kellyoke performance that moment came undone with an odd placement (she flipped to fals on 'sweet' instead of the belt) - which resulted in an almost a pitchy moment, and then what felt like a scramble to regain footing. Which seems churlish to comment on given the extremely reverent and touching treatment they gave to the occasion. I just thought for a moment there, from the opening minute, and the MLK excerpts it was going to surpass one of her very best performances, and the fact that it didn't was a little disappointing. I think Up To The Mountain is a song and moment Kelly fans hold dear, so its always a a treat to hear again, but maybe has higher hurdles to navigate then a run-of-the-mill return cover song visit.

I'm eternally bitter that all the focus that day was on Beyoncé for lip-syncing. Kelly's vocal was incredible.

One of my top ten (maybe five or even three) performances of hers ever. I can’t stop watching it.

The way it builds to that last verse has the perfect dramatic effect and really juices up the song. Plus, it’s just a pitch-perfect vocal delivered on the world stage. If I watch this performance once I have to watch it like 8 times.

The slow build is fantastic.
The lower register you’re like “oh this is gorgeous” then she gets to the belting and you’re just holding on to your soul because she’s about to snatch it away.
Just flawless.

They haven't officially announced her as the host again, but the BBMAs are in May (7 months after the last one lol).

Well, I honestly have no idea where the ellen show is currently standing right now, but if there's anyone with ratings receipts to take over her time slot, this person is Kelly.

There should be a bit of an asterisk on those numbers, which was for the week ending Jan 10th, as Ellen had been in repeats since Dec 10th. The numbers that should come out either this evening still or tomorrow will finally include some new shows for her. Kelly's had new shows since the 4th and ratings tend to go down for repeats of the talk shows. And there's been pre-emptions galore again this season a lot of the shows. However, even with ratings taking a dive across the board for syndicated shows, it's clear Ellen's has taken a big blow this year.
I think there's probably too much legal stuff and contracts for Ellen to bow out a year early, but it's going to be interesting to see how everything shakes out. What the Post mentions that most everything that's been jumping on this story previously hasn't is that no one will be "taking over" Ellen's show, it's hers. It would have to be a new show with someone new. The timeslot thing that they also mentioned is another biggie. I could see NBC swapping the timeslots of the two shows next season on their O&O stations and what the rest of the station groups do is up to them.
eta: since he was included in the ratings, Maury is ending his show after the 2021-22 season after 30 years!
