Happened to watch this on YouTube and am now fully re-obsessed. Remains one of my all-time fave Idol performances by anyone, ever. Full body of goosebumps every damn time. ETA: nobody delete, keep this at the top of the page

ETA: nobody delete, keep this at the top of the page Interesting- I did not care for this performance. She sounds pitchy during some of the transitions and runs and overall very karaoke-ish to my ears with the exception of her amazing tone. She would destroy that song with her richer, more powerful voice of today. Still waiting for her to do a Mariah song during Kellyoke unless they are unable to obtain the necessary clearances.

I love that performance! I love how she very obviously tried to not just fully recreate the Mariah version (which truly is THE version) and then at the end was like fuck it I can do that too and basically goes note for note, and slays.

Natural Woman is her best performance on Idol AND on her show. It’s something about her cover that makes it perfect for her voice.

Girl what? Her first performance of it is all of this but this one? Flawless (outside of the quick moment she runs out of breath and then somehow belts out the hardest part of the song).

You're all wrong it's "Don't Play That Song" Yes!! This one has really always been so underrated to me especially. And she did it even better last year when she did it for Kellyoke. It really is so incredible how her voice has gotten BETTER in nearly 20 years. Like others have said, that’s usually not the case for these pop singers who tour rigorously. It’s another reason I’m so excited for new music no matter if it’s holiday or not because her voice is definitely in its second peak!

The Without You performance was the moment I knew she had IT and could really break through. It was effortless, incredible, and iconic. I was entranced and remember watching it over and over!

Along with Natural Woman, Without You is the one I wanna hear her sing again now that she has so much better control and awareness in her voice.

Never saw this Kellyoke until yesterday and hadn't heard the song, but it sort of reminds me of her "Trampoline" cover in being a modern pop sound I'd love to hear her explore on the new album, she kills this.

Jeremy and Pam, who host Miss Indepodcast, hinted that we will be getting new music news very soon. Supposedly there were some things Jason talked about in their interview a few weeks ago that they were later asked to edit out because the announcements are still coming. Seems to be just a matter of weeks from the way they were talking.

This NY Times profile confirms the Christmas album, and is also a fun read: NY TIMESALSO (unrelated) if anyone is a vocal nerd, this was a really cool watch / perspective on Kelly's technique (while she sings one of my favorite of her covers):

What the hell is a vocal frye(sp).

Kinda hoping the album is more seasonal than Christmas/holiday-specific, which I can make fit in with the vague way Jason was describing her project(s). By that I mean it can be a wintery album that feels relevant each season, but is largely full of somber original works and some choice, left-of-center covers like "River," "Just For Now" (not that specifically obv but something), etc.

I can’t listen to that song without feeling like the stretch between thanksgiving and New Years.

I'm guessing a late october release, so the announcement should happen within the next two weeks, maybe?

I kinda wouldn’t mind if Kelly rerecorded some of the WIR songs to include on the new Christmas album. Maybe just as bonus tracks
I think it’s brilliant that she is releasing a new holiday album. I’m sure recording it was a way to keep herself and the kids happy and in a good mood during the divorce so I don’t expect it to be depressing.
I hope she includes UTM.

So now that the Christmas album is confirmed…what songs are on our wish list? Although if it’s a moodier album, I don’t know what to expect.

I would like for there to be enough covers of classics that she can submit for a Grammy. I know that kept her out of contention for WIR. Something about using so many songs from the Great American Playbook or something. I may have also dreamt all of that. Lol

So now that the Christmas album is confirmed…what songs are on our wish list? Although if it’s a moodier album, I don’t know what to expect. One cover I'd love is Wintersong (Sarah McLachlan), this is the song she sang on The Voice during the finale with Jake Hoot. I know there is the duet version on Spotify but I would LOVE to have a solo Kelly version. She sounds gorgeous on it and it's totally the vibe I'm hoping she take this album with. I kinda want a sad Christmas album. Overall I'm actually disappointed that we're getting another Christmas album. I know I'll love it but I just wanted a regular album. So going with that I would love it if she put out all original songs, something like where she responds to all the originals from Wrapped in Red but instead this time they are sad.... like imagine if we got a response to Winter Dreams and how she's feeling now after the divorce? I would die.

It's kind of ironic that Wrapped in Red was her first album release after getting married and her second Christmas album will be her first after getting divorced.

I would die. I would LOVE for this album to be a complete response to Wrapped in Red. I actually adore that idea. I was lowkey hoping that the divorce being finalized a few weeks back would mean good news on the regular music front, but I suppose we can't always get what we want.

I suppose a new Christmas album was inevitable considering how well WIR and UTT have been doing season after season; eventually, Atlantic would want a slice of that pie. Although I'd rather have a new regular album, I'm still looking forward to the new Christmas album, especially if it has a more sombre tone. Definitely more appropriate considering what's been going on in the world.
