Lover is my second favorite album from Taylor, after Red. It feels like an album that, for the most part, is a soundtrack of mine. I definitely consider it part of my soundtrack to my freshman year of college. (The album was released the Friday during Welcome Week orientation, and classes started three days later). I've since made great friends, experienced some great things, experienced some terrifying and horrible things, developed a crush, and made amazing memories.
17. ME! -- Y'all are tasteless as hell! This here is a certified bop all about loving yourself, all of your perfect imperfections, all of your good qualities and bad qualities. It's about individualism and celebrating the uniqueness of YOU. There's only one you on this earth--there's no one else with your exact personality, your exact vibe, your exact aura. And that's what's so amazing about you! This is one of the things that really helped me grow this past year (freshman year of college is the year) in my self-love and confidence. I still have my struggles. I get dysphoric, I get upset, I have those days that we all have, where everything is just "blah." But I always try to find something to take my mind off of it, to make the day a bit brighter for myself as I always try to do for everyone else. I never let a bad day affect anyone else's day. Why should I let it affect mine? Omg the first part - that was basically me with 1989. "Shake It Off" came out the day before I left for college (it's my most-played song ever actually lol - across iTunes and Spotify that I've had over the years) and the era went on until my the second semester of sophomore year when "New Romantics" finished its run. Definitely one of the soundtracks of mine! Great that Lover was able to be that for you :) I think how "ME!" helped you with self-love and confidence your first year of college is probably why I love "Shake It Off" so much - it basically did the same for me (more so the confidence part). Outside of the fact that "Shake It Off" is a better song than "ME!"

Thanks for doing the countdown Devil Marlena Nylund! Honestly Taylor's albums are very hard to rank because they are quality through and through. My rankings for Lover can change so quickly depending on my current mood or recent promotion (such as the City of Lover concert). Also, how can you really compare some of the songs on the album when they are so different? I love SYGB, but it doesn't sound anything like the rest of the album in mood or intent, so it's very hard to place. I do have a few thoughts: My top 3 was the countdown top 3. There is no doubt in my mind that Cruel Summer, Lover, and Cornelia Street will go down as classics in the fandom. IFTYE is such a bop and I still can't understand why no one really seems to care about it. It's such a fun, breezy start to the album with clever lyrics and Taylor's unique brand of shadiness. It's grown on me so much as time has gone on, and I actually think it could've made a good single. I'm glad y'all got on board with DBATC. It's always been one of the standouts of the album. It's an all around great song - lyrics, melody, song structure, instrumentation, vocals. I'm sure some will crucify me for saying this, but I just don't see why False God is so loved. I do like that it's different for Taylor, and I particularly commend her for the vocal styling, but I think it's a little boring. I wasn't crazy about The Man when the album came out and am still not, although I'm glad she tried to tackle the subject. I think it's ultimately the production that brings it down. When she played it acoustically for City of Lover, I saw more potential in it. Even though I only ranked it at #13, I kind of stan "Me!" There, I said it.
