11 cowriters for this fodder. I hope covid 19 kills current country. MR It only has that many writers because of Songland. The original writers - then everyone on the show gets a credit as well. BTW, highly recommend Songland if you haven’t checked it out. Very interesting.

"I hope covid 19 kills current country" - that's too much don't you think? Think what you will about the song but we're talking about actual people's lives here and that's just not a thing to be joked around with.

My feelings on the song are the same tho; it's good, but not sure how much I would revisit it outside of radio play.

It's weird because the consensus online from what I have seen on Twitter is that this song sounds very similar to "Rich" by Maren Morris, a song that most know that I loathe, and yet I can't get enough of this song, it helps that Hillary sings a good chunk of the song and sounds great. Also the part of the chorus that goes "Don't need doubles and bubbles to get in all kinds of trouble out in the country" is pure ear-candy. That specific line also really gives me Sam Hunt "Single For The Summer" vibes... It is practically identical in melody to the "Blame it on the bikinis, party girls, and martinis and the sunshine" line.

This is fine and get why radio would love it, but I don’t see this doing much for their career either. Makes sense to pivot though even if it’s taking out one of my favourites from them.
RIP “What I’m Leaving For” 😢

I get what you're saying, but not many songs do much for bands/artists that are almost 15 years into their career - unless it's a pretty significant hit ("Live Like You Were Dying," by Tim McGraw comes to mind). If this is a song that becomes top 20/10 and they now a good, upbeat song that their audience knows to open their show, I think it's a win. I also think the timing for, "What I'm Leaving For," is bad. No one is leaving now and won't be for a while.

I agree that timing ended up being really bad for "What I'm Leaving For" because for at least 90 days (optimistically) no one is going to be leaving. I also like this song better, so I am happy!

I think it was pretty clear that "What I'm Leaving For" was going to go in the direction of their past few era's follow-up hits and fail to move the needle much. It was not selling at all until they did the performance on the ACMs, and then it settled back down again on iTunes. I personally didn't get the impression it would end their second single slump, and I think there were at least 3-4 better single options on the record.
On the other hand, "Champagne Night" had the opposite impact with consumers because it did move the needle already, and I think that's why they decided to just go ahead and jump on that since it would've been a waste not to capitalize on it when it was connecting. They seem to do pretty well with fun, flashy uptempo jams like this one (see: "Bartender" and "Downtown"), and it's been awhile since either of those. The other niche they fill is with songs like "Need You Now" and "Just a Kiss" and they just had a hit with one of those with "What If I Never Get Over You." "What I'm Leaving For" doesn't check either box.

Yeah, it's a no-brainer to move to Champagne Night after the lukewarm reception of the previous single. This is a band that is 10 years removed from their biggest single, coming off a comeback #1 song, and looking to keep momentum. What I'm Leaving For wasn't going to get it done.

I like this, and completely understand why they would move on, but I am a little disappointed to see "What I'm Leaving For" stall out, as imo it is the infinitely better song. "Champagne Night" is the better single, though. I am surprised that they have moved on from their album so quickly.

"Champagne Night" is the better single, though. I am surprised that they have moved on from their album so quickly. I could see them possibly tacking this one onto a 'deluxe edition' of Ocean like what they did with "Compass" for Golden. Or at the very least, they could easily slap this onto the end of the album on the streaming sites like what Kane Brown did for his last couple standalone songs, without actually putting them on any re-released physical copy. And I think there's a good chance they'll come back to Ocean for at least one more single once this peaks. It's possible they'll just move on to new music instead once that time comes, but I'd say it's more likely we get a third official country single out of the album before they start a new era given how new the record still is + that "Champagne Night" was a one-off due to Songland not indicative of them having been working on anything new (which they likely haven't started any of that yet).

I could see them doing that too. I really hope not, though - the re-release with extra songs is probably my biggest pet peeve with regards to music.

Doubt they’ll do anything physical until later on (not unlike when Sheryl Crow added “Sweet Child O Mine” without making a “deluxe edition” of the album. However, the band could also put their acoustic stuff from The Ocean-adjacent EP and this song and make THAT a deluxe CD release at some point.

Second most added song with 38 adds on Mediabase not bad for a song that wasn't even at radio 8 days ago.
Also this debuted at #58 on the Airplay chart.

Radio seems much more excited for it than it was for "What I'm Leaving For". "Champagne Night" has a spincrease of 330 and is #3 taking off, and those numbers should surely grow this week.

This sounds a lot like Maren Morris' "Rich". The beat, the chorus melody..

I was just stopping by this thread to say that the song title sounds like a Bath & Body Works fragrance line, only to discover that the second page is half relevant information and half ignorance and insensitivity. This is a music forum, y'all; if anyone (hint: one poster) is likening the country music format to COVID-19, they're clearly not mature or articulate enough to have a place in the discussion. Period. You should be embarrassed. ETA: This is the first time I have actually listened to the song, and I like it a lot! I guess it really appeals to my pedestrian consumer tastes. But in all seriousness, as a Midwestern-raised late-20s woman who associates with men and women of the same demographic, it works for me. Definitely something my friends and I can happily relate to in the same vein of Maren Morris' "All My Favorite People."

Didn't expect them to kill off the other single, but I hope this smashes for them. I love it. (I loved "Rich" too btw.)

And grow it did! “Champagne Night” currently has a spincrease of 817 which should translate to a ~400 bullet on the real chart. I wouldn’t be surprised to see them enter the top 50 tomorrow night. This is surely the best start a non-lead single/non-hourly deal has had for them since “Freestyle” ( )!

People need a fun song like this right now and it will still be super popular in summer. It was the right choice to swap. Love seeing it take off for them.

People are not interested in feeling their feelings during this crisis. Can't blame them. The demise of "Drowning" and pivot from "What I'm Leaving For" are great examples of that. I fear "Getting Good" could be next (The lyric 'I'm afraid of both my parents dying' is all too real right now.)

As for "Champagne Night" this song is absolutely on fire like lady𝓐fan noted and I do think it could easily be in the Mediabase Top 50 tomorrow night.
