#90. Kenny Chesney - "Reality"

I was going to guess "Reality" because, well, Kenny Chesney. One thing I've learned on Pulse is that Kenny is very polarizing if not borderline disliked, so any song of his in a year-end rankdown is bound to have a fair amount of detractors.

Speaking of polarizing, that's what we find at #88...

I don't even like girls and yet I think "I Like Girls That Drink Beer" is a bop. Not surprised though as Toby is another polarizing artist on Pulse.

The song was first released independently and played heavily on Sirius/XM's The Highway in May of 2012. After label head Scott Borchetta and Republic Records from NYC saw the potential, they signed FGL and immediately sent "Cruise" to mainstream radio.
It reached #1 by December. The song took 19 weeks to top the airplay chart, making it the fastest rise to #1 for a debut single since Heartland did it in 2006 with "I Loved Her First." It spent three weeks at #1, the longest stay at #1 by a debut single since Gretchen Wilson's "Redneck Woman" in 2004.
The single also was a top 10 hit at pop radio after it was remixed with Nelly and hit #4 on the Hot 100. I'm choosing to ignore the HCS accomplishment LOL.
Once upon a time I enjoyed "Cruise" but after recognizing all their songs were like that and the fact it was grossly overplayed, I grew to hate it. The remixed version is horrid.
Also, I literally couldn't believe that "baby, you a song" was the actual lyric at first. I was like, "no way, I'm just mishearing it..." Nope lmao.

With the great popularity of FGL on Pulse I figured I'd be the highest ranker. There was a time I would turn it off as soon as it started on the radio but I know leave it on.

Cruise is an extremely catchy earworm and the overplay and following hatred for FGL has put a stigma on the song ever since. I don't go out of my way to play it all the time but it's FAR from the worst song from this year.

I recently watched a video by Grady Smith in which "Cruise" is referred by quite a few as one their "gateway songs" that got them into country music and allowed them to discover other more traditional artists, so there's certainly something about that I can appreciate. I don't feel like have the same animosity towards this song that others might have, but I certainly never go out of my way to listen to it.

I love the song and video for "Cruise." I'm glad it did so well for them and that their career has continued to be super successful!

Granted I did dip my toes in the waters with regards to country music in 2010-2011, 2012-2014 was when I actually started to listen to more country which coincides with when bro-country was at its peak. I don't know if "Cruise", "Boys 'Round Here", "That's My Kind of Night" etc. that I don't like much anymore allowed me to discover more traditional artists per se but those songs doing well even on the Hot 100 did keep my attention in country music so there's that (although the real intro to country music was Taylor Swift for me).

"Cruise" very massively overstayed. I think I have liked a grand total of one (1) song from FGL in their entire career and that's "Meant to Be."
I've never much liked their voices, and "Cruise" has atrocious lyrics and it's...it's just an awful song lol. Glad it's finally gone but it ought to have left in the 110s tbh.

The only one I've really liked is "Confession," but "People are Different" was really good too, and of course that wasn't a single lol. They've literally released multiple songs I would put in my "least favorites of the decade" category ("Stay", "Sun Daze", "This is How We Roll", "H.O.L.Y.", "Anything Goes", "Meant to Be" -- yes, I hated "H.O.L.Y." and "Meant to Be" lol).

I have a hard time with FGL because I cannot stand the lead singers voice and that has ruined a couple songs I think had some potential. That and the overplay of just about everything they have released doesn't help either

Interesting that Dirt is not mentioned in this thread as someone's favorite FGL song. Cruise is a very bad song to me and it has more to do with Joey Moi's production than their vocals tbh. It and Need You Now are the two major country songs that make me laugh at country music at that time.

It peaked at #21 on Mediabase in January of 2013. The song was written by Katrina Elam, Melissa Peirce and John Paul White. The music video, which most remember about the single, was directed by Brian Lazzaro and featured the robot that appeared in Argo.
One of the most baffling single choices I have ever seen a label make. I don't mind "Say Goodnight", I like it well enough, but there were so many better options on Life at Best. I thought for sure "The Fight" or "Skeletons" was going to be the single. "Every Other Memory" was another logical choice. This one and "I Love You" I thought were the two least likely to be released lol. I like the weird music video though lol.

The original lineup of the band dissolved in 2010. Signed to independent HTM Records with Stokes Tunes, "Underdog" was released in September of 2011 and peaked at #37 on Billboard in April of 2012. New Revolution was brought on to promote the song by the end of its chart run but it was too late. The song was written by Stokes, Harrison Tobin, Jason Sever and David Lee Murphy. Tobin's label was HTM Records. It was the only single on country or pop radio to reach the top 40 that year with a 100% artist-owned distribution firm.
This song is great and sounds like something that would've been at radio in the early-to-mid 2000s. Great lyrics and a good melody to go along with it. I relate it to my life, since I was told multiple times my relationship wouldn't go anywhere with my now fiancée, since were were a few years apart in age and lived 90 minutes away from one another; and that I would never do anything in my profession lol. It's jet fuel music lmao.
I think it's fitting a song called "Underdog" was an underdog hit. It's incredible this made the top 40 with who was promoting it. Glad it was able to at least make it this far.

#84. The Farm - "Be Grateful"
Total Points: 1,602 Average: 72.8 Year Released: September, 2012 Mediabase Peak: #37 Billboard Peak: #36 Rankings:sabre14 - 6 dgarcia3377 - 27 KanenrĂĄ:ke - 30 austin - 32 kw9461 - 32 ladyđfan - 34 recordyear - 54 .indulgecountry - 58 toomuchboy - 69 tim - 75 someguy - 76 Cody Wants Out... - 77 LBTrocks - 82 castleoblivion26 - 86 bigfan101 - 89 gardyfan - 101 zaclord đ - 101 fireflies - 108 bboat11 - 115 ClevelandRox - 116 fearlessarrow - 116 raylatch98 - 118 Following: kamala 2024 truther "Be Grateful" was released as the second-career and final single for The Farm in September of 2012. It peaked at #36 on Billboard in late February of 2013. The song was written by Rodney Clawson and Marc Beeson. It was off their debut, self-titled album.
The Farm was a trio comprised of Nick Hoffman, Krista Marie and Damien Horne. Hoffman was Kenny Chesney's fiddle player on the road for many years. Marie had a solo recording deal with BBR from 2009-2010. Horne was at one point part of The MuzikMafia and had a solo pop career. The three decided to form a trio in early 2011 and signed with Warner Music's Elektra Records, while also having their own label called All In Records. New Revolution promoted their songs to radio, while Warner handled finance and distribution.
I liked "Home Sweet Home" more but this song is really good and was the obvious second single when I first heard the album. It was really the only outside cut on the record. This song's timing is also why I live it since my dad was diagnosed with cancer that fall and it helped me get through that rough patch. I think The Farm were so unique in finding a sound nobody else had been doing but unfortunately Warner dropped them before they finished their second album. I don't care for their solo stuff but together they were great. Marie and Horne are now a duo called New North, while Hoffman has his own outdoor TV show.

Not so much a lot of their copycat soundalikes that came later, but this one was really fresh and really stood out at the time. I don't like the trend of songs that it ushered in at the format at all, but as a standalone song, I still really like it. I agree with sabre14 that the remix was horrific, though.

âSomethinâ âBout a Truckâ - Iâve honestly never really liked this song at all and it still remains an instant radio changer should it ever come on. I actually didnât become a fan of Kipâs until his sophomore album, Wild Ones, brought me into the fold. Iâve been a fan of each one of his subsequent albums with Wild World being one of the best country albums of 2020.
âSay Goodnightâ - While Iâve never dived into their albums, Iâve always liked their singles and this one is no different. I still hear this song on the radio frequently down here in Texas.
Both âUnderdogâ and âBe Gratefulâ are just kind of meh for me and neither are songs that Iâd ever revisit again, so Iâll just leave it at that lol.

I didn't like any of these lol.
I do like Kip Moore a lot better than I used to after seeing him live two times. He puts on a really good show, but a lot of his songs are still misses for me, and "Something Bout A Truck" is a miss for sure. I don't HATE it, but melodically and instrumentally I don't enjoy it at all.
