I love "Sad Song" and I'm sad it is out so early. It is a bit slow but Laura sings it so well. I do think sometime down the road I would like to do a Nashville Rankdown series because there are some great songs from that show

Posted #47 and #46 close together cause I need to get to bed
I'll be back tomorrow to get us through the bottom 10. Will Matraca continue to see her solo songs be eliminated in the Top 10 or could we see some other songs go? Any predictions?

I sure hope some of Matraca's solo offerings continue to fight. "South of Heaven" and "Lying to the Moon" are incredible and deserve high placements.

I apparently loved it too though! I've long been a fan of John Berry especially his first two albums of which "When Love Does" was on his self-titled album from 1993. Even as a young boy I found myself drawn not to just sad songs but those with great emotion conveyed both through the lyrics and production. It was a strange time then as my father had just passed three years prior, so I guess this song just happened to capture some of the sadness I felt at the time. It might seem like a random favorite to most, but for me I can barely listen to the song without tearing up.

tim my sentiments exactly, only about my aunt, and that's what led to my high ranking. I was struck by John Berry's voice (hadn't actually heard of him prior to this song) and he wrung every ounce of emotion needed and it really struck. This was a very strong list so I just couldn't find room in my Top 10 for it, but this was quite stellar and a standout from the list.

John Berry isn’t too well known on here as the bulk of his success came during the mid ‘90s, but his first two albums have some great material on it. I recommend checking out “I Never Lost You” and “You and Only You” which are kind of in the same vain as this song. My favorite song of his, though, is “Standing On the Edge of Goodbye”.

What on Earth??!?! I'm very disappointed to see "Lying to the Moon" out so early; that's too beautiful to say goodbye to this soon. It easily deserved a Top 20 showing here.

Had we been ranking Trisha's version I likely would've put this in my top 20, but I found Matraca's original take to be quite dated (I try to avoid saying that but in this case it fits) and I just didn't find it all that captivating. This is a good example of an artist that is able to take a song and really make it all their own.

This is a good example of an artist that is able to take a song and really make it all their own. to be honest I prefer Matraca's vocals on "Lying to the Moon" over Trisha's. I feel like both versions sound a bit dated tbh but that doesn't make me dislike either. I would have considered including Trisha's version if she didn't have 4 singles that Matraca wrote (and I ended up narrowing those 4 down to 3) I've always loved Trisha's voice but I've never felt she was the best at conveying emotions. "Lying to the Moon" is a case where I don't feel the same emotions from her that I do from Matraca's. The same could be said about "I Don't Paint Myself Into Corners Anymore" and "Melancholy Blue", both of which were recorded by Rebecca Lynn Howard before Trisha and Rebecca nailed the vocals and Trisha's were not as good. Not to say she sounds bad on any, cause she sounds great, just the emotions I hear in the vocals is different for me

"I Don't Feel Like Loving You Today" is a beautiful song and deserved better here for sure.
That said, I always associate the song with derailing Gretchen's career. Terrible single choice at a very pivotal moment for her.
