Or did Ashanti just put out subpar music following her debut?

I never thought about that. Beyonce was popular before going solo. Monica, Brandy, Aaliyah, and Mya were known for being popular at the same time. Beyonce might have hurt Ashanti, but similar artists can be popular at the same time.

I think Beyonce mostly took Jlo's spot which lead to her decline.
Ashanti was never gonna last anyway. She was riding a hot sound/production team at the time. I guess you could argue that some of the songs that went to Beyonce could have gone to Ashanti, but other than that I think she was destined to fade.

I remember at the time Beyonce overshadowing Ashanti. When Ashanti released "Only You" I remember an award show performance and a couple of other promo performances that seemed highly influenced by Beyonce at the time.

Yes and no.
Ashanti's 2nd solo album knocked Beyonce's out of the top spot and had bigger first week sales. She was doing just fine with Beyonce's solo stardom.
What killed Ashanti's momentum was her record label's indictment resulting in her era being cut short, sponsorship/deals/tours being scrapped bc of it, Irv Gotti making bad decisions with her career unbeknownst to her , and being a casualty in 50 Cent's very publicized beef with Murda Inc. A long wait in between albums after leaving the public on a bad note whilst Beyonce continued to explode in the R&B field did her no favours. The public had moved on by the time she came back around. It also didn't help that during that time (and still today to some extent), we only seem to get 1 or 2 black girls at a time that they let be superstars.

What messed Ashanti up was that rushed sophomore album. It was terrible. Yeah, you have fantastic highlights like Rain on Me, but the album pales in comparison to her debut. Irv used that album as a promotional tool for other artists. Remember the random skits and rap features? LOL. The album sold okay, but it was a slump quality wise. Then when she readied up her 3rd effort, she attempted to be the performer that Beyonce already was, which made her look like a copycat and only showcased the fact that she wasn’t a great performer. Concrete Rose was also garbage. I will say her decline was quick.

And she quietly tried to get away from it.

Yeah, she seemed exactly like the type of R&B star to last 2-3 albums and then fade. If it weren't Beyoncé, some other R&B star would have taken her place.

Yes and now Beyoncé is overexposed Overexposed right now? She has just one song out now that isn't even her own one as it is on a remix for another artist.

Who tf is Ashanti?? This is why I love DaBaby for shining light on unknown artists 🥰 She was a r&b singer who had a massive hit in the early 00s with “Foolish”, but idk if the dababy song with her will flop. His other song “rockstar” is being pushed

No Beyonce didn't. If yall noticed in '03 Ashanti and Beyonce were both having top ten hits. Ashanti career ended because her label (Murder Inc) got caught up in the drug scandal and it ruined her career too. Beyonce and Ashanti were both thriving in '03.

I’d say she kinda killed JLOs music career for a bit. I also feel Avril took a downfall once Taylor started having pop hits. Could just be a coincidence, but that’s why I noticed.

The public's affection for artists is quite fickle. Ashanti didn't have ONE big hit. She had many Top Ten hits and a 10 week No.1 with "Foolish" but as artists try to grow musically and try different things, the public falls out of love once they don't find in them any of what they liked in the first place. Beyoncé had Matthew Knowles' support behind her whilst Ashanti had Gotti killing opportunities for her. I wouldn't say Ashanti's career faltered just because Beyoncé went solo.

I think Avril's downfall had to do with the landscape of pop changing. I think the fact that after "Girlfrind" she didnt have anymore hits and tried to come back in '11 and at that time the audience in America shifted to the Katys, Rihannas, Lady Gaga's, and Kesha's.

The label was the main problem above all else, which inherently means all her releases fell apart as a direct consequence

Being too talented snatched and ahead of her time is what did it for in for Shantlegend. The general public was never going to be ready to sustain a star like her for long.

Literally Ashanti or Beyonce didnt destroy her career. Ashanti and Beyoncd were BOTH killing it in '03. THE REAL REASON ASHANTI CAREER FADED is because of THE LABEL MURDER INC ITSELF. Murder Inc. got caught up in the drug trade which affected the distribiton deals and the label had to focus in the legal battles and that's where the labels money was going to. So everyone on the label their career had to come to a halt which ended their career's permanently!!!! BEYONCE HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH IT!!!!
But with Ashanti being the loyal girl she is, she rode hard for Murder Inc, and she couldve went to another label. People need to stop saying Beyoncd kills everyone career's cause that's not true people can coincide and exist with Beyonce career. Even Ashanti said herself, it was Murder Inc. Ashanti and Beyonce do know each other like that. Stop reaching yall.
Similar thing happened to JoJo, a label got caught up lost distributions deals.

Let's not forget Ashanti was killing it before Bey came on the scene as a solo artist.
Urban/Black female artist were still successful during the reign of Beyonce: MJB, Tamia, Fantasia, Christina Millian, Rihanna, Keri(for a short period of time), Ciara, Alicia Keys, MC.
Now the only career Beyonce did kill is Keri's.

Nah. That's too much to put on Bey. I think there were a few missteps on Ashanti's team's part, coupled with the media's inability to let two female singers - especially two female singers of color - do their thing.
For shame, too. Ashanti is mega talented, and deserved to have a better legacy. <No shade to Queen Bey, who has certainly earned her status as an icon.>
