And those two vocalists turned this tender, innocent song into an oversung mess of a competition between who put more melisma or who did more unnecessary runs, completely turning the attention to themselves rather than the melody or the song Sorry, but I’ve always preferred the “vocally challenged” version of this song. That cover became unlistenable halfway through —and I thought MC and LV had so much potential to do a great cover and Girl plea there's not a note or adlib that's out of place on Luther and Mariah's version, they both compliment each other, they have chemistry, they respect and accentuate the melody. That's how a duet ballad is supposed to be sung, with harmonies and actual vocal effort. I love Diana and Lionel is a great artist, but they are not known as vocalists. I think it depends on your definition of vocalist or singer. And your preference of style of music in my opinion. And the song. Neither Diana nor Lionel is a belter, but I think they’ve had pretty good vocals. To me, Diana’s Missing You has much better vocals than Mariah’s Through the rain, for example. On Endless Love, maybe we can say these are two different styles/ genres. The original is more of an AC/ pop style and the cover is an r&b/gospel stuff. For those who are more into the first style, we don’t need all the runs and melisma. Just like when Mariah covers stuff like I wanna know what love is, and for someone like me butchers it by adding far too many random runs that take away from the main melody. To me, the last minute of Endless Love’s cover is insufferable, and I feel they are showing off their vocals instead of focusing on the melody. But I understand people who like the overadorned vocals and who’d feel that the original is lame and syrupy. Different strokes for different folks I guess

Now looking back at all we've had We let so many dreams just slip through our hands Why must we wait so long, before we see? How sad the answers to those questions can be"Do You Know Where You're Going to" is the theme song from Miss Ross second major film role Mahogany. In 1976 the mellow R&B ballad reached #1 on the Hot 100, becoming her third as a solo act. In 1998 Mariah Carey covered it and her rendition, was included as a bonus track on her first hits collection #1's. The year after, another cover by Jennifer Lopez appeared on international editions of her debut album On the 6. 5. There's a new me coming out And I just had to live And I want to give I'm completely positiveAn anthem for the LGBTQ community. Diana Ross reportedly had the idea for this song after noticing drag queens dressed up as herself in NYC. Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards wrote and produced it for the 1980 diana album. The song also had a personal significance for her career, as she was leaving Motown and her mentor Berry Gordy after almsot two decades with the release of this album. The song peaked at #5 in the US and it's one of her most enduring hits in terms of cultural significance. It was sampled in the 1997 #1 hit "Mo Money Mo Problems" by The Notorious B.I.G. 4. 5. Theme from Mahogany (8): The melody in the verses is one of the loveliest, most beautiful of the 70s IMO. The instrumental and vocals complement perfectly. I wish the chorus were just a tad stronger. Overall a great ballad and Diana’s is the best version of all to me.
4. I’m Coming Out (2): I had this at #1 for awhile. In fact my top 3 rotated at the top. I liked this song in the 80s, but I liked it more in the 90s after the Mo Money sample and even more in the 00s when I started going out to gay bars, and then when I came out :) great melody, production, vibe, lyrics.

I know, I know you must follow the sun Wherever it leads But remember If you should fall short of your desires Remember life holds for you one guarantee You'll always have meIn 1970 Ashford & Simpson performed magic. After writing the Motown classic performed by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell in 1967, they were enlisted by Barry Gordy to re-work "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" for Miss Ross' solo debut record. And what they did with the song was EPIC: they took an orchestra, re-wrote the verses, added new sections and gave it a Gospel flare. Diana performed the verses in what became a pecularity of her style, she recited them as spoken-word passages. This new version of "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" became Diana's first solo #1 hit on both the Hot 100 and R&B charts, despite Gordy's initial skepticism, and bested the #20 peak of "Reach Out and Touch" by far. To this day, it is one of her signature songs, possibly meaning more to her career than it did for the original performers. Here's Diana Ross performing it surrounded by industry veterans and aspiring divas at VH1's Divas Live 2000: 3. If there's a remedy I'll run from itAlmost 8 minutes of Disco heaven. The slow intro, the sensual vocals and then the beat's explosion were the perfect ingredients for this song's success. "Love Hangover" is one of the most acclaimed hits from the Disco era. It reached #1 on the Hot 100, R&B and Dance charts simultaneously in 1976, but its endurance in pop culture has made it a classic over the years with numerous covers and samples. 2. Love Hangover Points: 399 Average: 7,529 Standard deviation: 8,008singingrulebritannia : 1 #LisaRinna : 1 Ezekiel 23:20–21 : 1 @antigonerising : 1 SHOOTER : 1 Soulsista : 2Mirago : 2newpower : 2craziaskowboi : 3 🇯🇲 lucy88 🇯🇲 : 4 Juanca : 6 alexcuse : 9 Troublemaker : 11 Sobered upgonecountry : 19 George : 20 Ty : 22 Troy : 23 Respectfully I say to thee I'm aware that you're cheating When no one makes me feel like you doIn 1980 Diana Ross wanted to take control of her sound, so she enlisted Nile Ridgers and Bernard Edwards to write and produce the material for her new album, diana. The members of Chic re-juvenated her sound giving her the Disco flavour she was by then known for, but with a more funk approach; however, she wasn't pleased with the results, so she had the songs remixed and re-arranged before release. "Upside Down" was the lead single from the album (released 4 weeks after the album came out) and an instant worldwide success. It quickly became her 5th #1 hit on the Hot 100 and reached the top of the charts throughout Europe. There couldn't have been a better #1 for this rankdown! 1. 3. Ain’t no mountain high enough (3): THIS is one of the best covers ever IMO. It was a complete reinvention that kept the essence of the original but turned it upside down. Those recited verses floating over the original melody work as great preparation for the bombastic, gospel, dancey chorus. Great production and vocals that made me like this more than the original. 2. Love hangover (6): I always saw this as her Donna Summer moment —Sexy, musically rich and fun disco with layered vocals and instrumentals- but with an intro that has Diana’s signature. A disco classic that’s deserving of high praise. Although I ranked it at #6, this could’ve easily been my #4. 1. Upside down (1): YESS!!! Another classic that still sounds good now. It‘s like a modernized, funkyfied disco pop tune that represented very well the musical transition happening this year. It’s worth noting this was the fastest AT40 debut since 1971’s The Shaft. No one would debut that high in the 80s... actually, the next highest debut would be The Best Things in Life Are Free. Amazing top 3 -and top 5. Thanks #LisaRinna for a great rankdown!

I know, it’s not quite disco right? The piano sounds like a bass and vice versa. It’s too elastic; it’s a standout that encompasses both what disco was and what pop music is to become. I remember hearing somewhere, maybe radio? that Diana was sending Janet and Madonna the blueprints for dance-pop that the 80s would adopt. Great to see this deserving anthem finally win a rankdown.
