For me, God Only Knows is not just the number one song of this round but one of the best songs of all time... no matter who is singing it (Beach Boys do it best though). Shocked and sad itโs not higher.

The ignorance is not in having a negative opinion about The Beach Boys' music. I know that some people (including friends of mine) don't and never will enjoy their music. It's in somehow managing, through many years of being a music fan, to be oblivious of how enduring and widespread praise for their recordings is. Like really, it's Pet Sounds! How are you going to be shocked about #1 rankings for a song on an album where, on several user aggregate music rating sites, the most common score given, by tens of thousands of users, is a 5/5? And it seems like every other day, I hear God Only Knows, Wouldn't It Be Nice, Sloop John B, Good Vibrations, etc. in a new commercial/TV show/movie/whatever, so their impact is clearly felt in the outside world, too. And if you're looking for fans specifically on Pulse, maybe take like a second to perform a search in the Games forum to see how many rankdowns they've been in, often performing very well? All in all, it felt like a lazy and myopic take to say "I didn't know The Beach Boys were loved". The problem here is that your experience is not everybody's experience. For me, I never hear anyone talk about The Beach Boys or their music and I rarely hear them in any sort of public setting, except for occasionally in a commercial or a film here and there, but that's no different than hearing any other commercial or movie (and many songs played on those platforms are not even necessarily well-known songs by popular artists so that isn't really a litmus test for how universal something is -- Target had an ad campaign like close to probably 10 years ago now that used a Dolly Parton song that wasn't even a hit single i.e.). I could rattle off a long list of country artists who had huge careers decades ago and there'd be plenty of people on this forum who don't know that genre well enough that would have the same impression of them that I did of The Beach Boys (which is more or less "who?" and "why?"). It was 50/50 between that and me also just thinking the song kinda sucked and being personally surprised that a list with stuff like one of Mariah Carey's biggest classics on it i.e. that this song of all things was somehow the superior song for so many people. You're a helluva lot more blunt with expressing your opinions in these rankdowns than my comment was that set you off, so I really don't get it other than some form of musical elitism. You acknowledge in this very post that you're aware that there are people who you personally know that dislike them, but yet still made a flippant remark about how no one should have them in their bottom 5, which is basically the same thing as me being surprised by all the support up top so idgi /shrug Just wanted to add to this point - I know indulge mentioned the bolded part, but even I as a "country poster" I'm still not familiar with a bunch of artists/songs that are regarded highly in the country music world. The country forum posters have welcomed me with open arms years ago when all I knew was super modern country (so like 2010s) and then a few hits here and there from prior ("Jolene" etc.). They didn't call me ignorant for not knowing a single George Strait song (ok maybe like two lol) or thinking Reba's voice was something I couldn't get into (which obviously I have overcome), instead they more or less encouraged me to give them a try. Now I'm not saying encourage indulge to listen to The Beach Boys My exposure to country music was very limited to begin with growing up in a place where country music was non-existent besides "'Take Me Home, Country Roads", but that's been my exposure to country music and that's just the way my experience with music has been - so I wouldn't have known who Reba/George Strait/Johnny Cash etc. was. I don't think I even knew country music was before falling for Taylor Swift's music. So thanks to the country posters who's dealt with my not-familiar-with-country-legends self (lol). I understand that some posters aren't happy with "God Only Knows" getting tanked and yes, from what I've seen it's definitely highly-regarded, often being included in "the greatest of all-time" lists. While I don't personally share the same sentiment as indulge regarding being surprised about The Beach Boys getting four #1s since I knew about "God Only Knows" prior to doing this RD, but calling it "ignorance" is a stretch. RDs are not that personal to warrant calling someone ignorant for artists/genres of music people don't typically listen to (unless it's racism etc. then it's well-warranted). Calling it "ignorance" almost sounds like gatekeeping, like there's some "right" way to listen to music or be a music fan which I disagree with - what's the fun in that? Of course, through getting more exposure through Pulse I learned about legends in country music and other genres as well, but ultimately my reason for listening to music is because I enjoy it and not because "I should like something because it's highly-regarded" (like I might check out critically-acclaimed music because I'm curious as to why people regard them highly but I can never force myself to like something just because it's critically-acclaimed - that's just not how my brain works). I feel like this was just a stream of consciousness-type post so apologies in advance if it's a bit hard to read.

Thereโs nothing ignorant about having an opinion about something so subjective by nature. Comments like these and the people who make them are a much different story. And if you're looking for fans specifically on Pulse, maybe take like a second to perform a search in the Games forum to see how many rankdowns they've been in, often performing very well? All in all, it felt like a lazy and myopic take to say "I didn't know The Beach Boys were loved". This rationale is problematic for so many reasons, least of all it being the fact that human beings do not have a singular lens and perspective through which they experience the world, but there's so much hubris and condescension to cut through here that trying to unpack it would be an exercise in futility. Carry on.

Ok, stuff really got out of hand over a stupid pun. Guess I need to step in one last time. I apologize for the second sentence in that first response post. If I had left it at the first sentence it would've been fine, but I was running high on passion and I felt the urge to put in a 'strikeback' of sorts, which was dumb. I also apologize for continuing that strain of sentiment into my second reply while quoting Shooter. At that point I was in too deep and wanted to explain myself, but I didn't need to use words like "lazy and myopic" to do that.

The gap between the #1 and #5 is the narrowest of any round, at only 8 points. That means if someone reduced their personal rank of the #1 by 9 points, it would have been enough to tank it from #1 to #5 overall.
#1 - 258 points #2 (tie) - 254 points #4 - 253 points #5 - 250 points

Never thought Iโd ever see crap last place in closeness. It's probably because I didn't rank based on popularity. :sip2:

Janet Jackson is a most surprising winner, especially given the competition.
