The Christmas 19-20 asterisk should be applied to Heartless and Blinding Lights. The Christmas season definitely enhanced their falls. If this happened pretty much any other time of year, Heartless probably falls from 1 to 11 instead of 17, while Blinding Lights falls from 11 to around 40 instead of 52.

yes - I was going for the 10 or so biggest drops by top 10 position (including drops at Christmas). If I extended the list a little more that would be on it.
I may separate Christmas and non-Christmas at some point when I have more time since Christmas songs follow a different statistical pattern

Taylor’s should have a small asterisk due to Christmas titles.

As mentioned, these big drops are often associated with the end of the holidays, deaths, memes/viral videos and streaming of new blockbuster releases. Gary - any insight on what's behind the huge fluctuations during the pre-streaming/pre-SoundScan era? Looks like there was a lot of chart turnover in 1974 (for whatever reason) so that may explain a few of the examples you cited. But it seems odd that tracks like 'Don't Talk To Strangers' (after a solid 4 weeks at #2 in '82) and 'Sexual Healing' (after holding at #3 for 3 weeks in '83) could simply freefall to #14 and #23 respectively. Meanwhile, the chart toppers during those years spent 6, 7, 8 and as many as 10 weeks at #1.

Meanwhile, the chart toppers during those years spent 6, 7, 8 and as many as 10 weeks at #1. There was an odd rule applied to the Hot 100 in 1982 and early 1983 that forced songs to hold steady when they really should have been dropping. That's why there were so many songs during that era holding at their peaks for many weeks and/or making huge drops. The rule was finally removed in the spring of 1983.

Interesting.
Looking for a reference to that rule, but haven't found anything. Wonder if Billboard offers a detailed explanation somewhere?

Re: The 1970s ('74 in particular) - lots of chart manipulation, because the Hot 100 wasn't scientific - it also included subjective elements such as 'how hot an act was', etc.
Bob White & Bill Wardlaw (Hot 100 chart managers from mid 70s through 4/30/83) are infamous for industry stories related to tinkering with the charts. A song by John Lennon was free falling for weeks but then held in place one lone week just so the press could have a story about all 4 Beatles being in the Top 40 separately at the same time.
Michael1973 is correct about the HOLDING POLICY which artificially created those enormous drops.

I got this from the old Radio and Records website:
The bullet/star holding period went into effect way back in the 60s but actually wasn't explained as such until 1974. A record received a bullet if it experienced significant gains in sales/airplay over the previous week. Therefore it easily signified records that were
growing the most prominent on the chart. When a record received a bullet it was in effect "guaranteed" not to fall the next week. If the next week it appeared without a bullet it was said to be in a "holding period" signifying that the record might be peaking in sales and/or airplay. Occasionally there were exceptions to the rule [Couldn't Get It Right by the Climax Blues Band and One Chain Don't Make No Prison by the Four Tops come to mind]
The holding period policy was brought about, it seems, at the request of retails and others in the industry that wanted a singles chart where climbers, peakers and decliners could easily be spotted at any given week. The holding period policy also allowed for the chance that a record might simply be in a lull and not on the verge of declining. At times holding period records did prevent songs below them from climbing as high as they might have, but these were not as common and you might think. And songs usually eventually climbed to their rightful positions. At worse the holding period might have prevented a song from peaking at say #31 and instead have it peak at #32. The holding period never applied to #1.
Billboard abandoned the holding period policy pretty much in the mid-80s in an effort for a more accurate chart. In fact many long-standing chart rules changed in the mid-80s. The one downside of its removal was records occasionally declining even though they may have actually gained in points which led to the erroneous belief the record was
declining when it actually wasn't.
There was also Oh Very Young by Cat Stevens which fell from a starred #10
the same week that One Chain Don't Make No Prison peaked.
There were also a few songs during the late 70's and early 80's that fell from #1 to #2 and still had a bullet. The first case was Disco Duck by Rick Dees. The other singles were: Three Times A Lady (Commodores), Mac Arthur Park (Donna Summer), Le Freak (Chic*), Too Much Heaven (Bee Gees), I Will Survive (Gloria Gaynor*), Eye Of The Tiger (Survivor) and Every time You Go Away (Paul Young).
(* fell from #1 twice with a bullet)
In all the above cases the song either held #2 for at least one more week or moved back to #1.
After the holding period was abolished songs dropped with a bullet in lower positions as well.

Taylor’s should have a small asterisk due to Christmas titles. Better yet, we should write Trollz and Franchise in big font to emphasize that their falls occurred under normal circumstances, and not during the holiday season.

Just curious, where would Blinding Lights fall from 12 to 23 rank among songs that fell from #12?
Also, J Cole is going to give a fresh update to this list next week.
