Aaliyah's debut album that was released on May 24, 1994. Age Ain't Nothing But a Number received generally favorable reviews from critics. Many noted Aaliyah's vocal ability and praised the lyrical content. Aaliyah was credited for redefining R&B by blending her voice with the new jack swing sound. The album peaked at #18 on the Billboard 200 and sold over three million copies in the United States. The album was certified Gold in Canada by Music Canada and Gold in the United Kingdom by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI). To date the album has sold over six million copies worldwide.
It sucks that whom the album is associated with and the underlying creepy undertones in some of the lyrics, but I honestly don't think about "that guy" when listening to the songs. I think of it more as a great throwback 90s album. I can't help but have a soft spot for her debut. The music on this record makes me feel very nostalgic of that time period.... when I was at my happiest in the 90s.
I love all the tracks on the album, including the bonus track "The Thing I Like". I just love the overall mood of the songs. Along with "One in A Million", I was heavily listening to this joint when I was at the lowest point in my life. They had helped me got through tough times.
Back & Forth: #5 Pop, #1 R&B
At Your Best (You Are Love): #6 Pop, #2 R&B
Age Ain't Nothing But A Number: #75 Pop, #35 R&B
Down With The Clique: #33 UK
The Thing I Like: #33 UK

It's got some good songs, but it's easily my least favorite studio album by her.

“At Your Best” is my favorite song by her. But “Street Thang” was an underrated bop!

Not my favorite but I still play this album. There’s something about the album I like. Maybe it’s her singing the tracks and the sound. Despite the controversy and behind the scenes shenanigans, this album is still worthy.
