Oh no! I dug the 1980s sound of this one. Everything just clicked for me.
How bad would it be if I thought the Bond song was the better Pretenders one?

71. I Lie - The dB's never heard of this band, but the vocals had some 80's vibes. The song was just kinda not interesting enough.

And meanwhile GLJ survived along with that terrible Iggy Pop song? There are some ugly choices being made here

That was the last reveal? Guess I'll see what I missed
85. Trust Me to Open My Mouth - Squeeze I felt this was gonna get tanked, but I'm a big Squeeze fan. Not their best , but still very uptempo.
84. Gunning for the Buddha - Shriekback Finally this Hare-Krishna wonder is out. It felt like some Peter Gabriel filler material. hated everything about this song, and that whole performance. Silly Silly and more silliness.
83. Shakin' Shakin' Shakes - Los Lobos I don't remember this song from the movie. I remember "La Bamba" and "Comon Let's Go" both top 40 hits. At least the MV featured Alfred Hitchcock.
82. Please - The Bolshoi I vaguely remember this. Sounds like Gene Loves Jezebel teaming up with Pseudo Echo. I loved it from all angles. Easily the best Bolshoi song I'll ever hear.
81. Darling It Hurts - Paul Kelly and the Coloured Girls This was a serious Psychedelic Surf's Up wonder. The organ did wonders for the song. Not bad for first time listen.
80. Gunslinger Man - The Long Ryders Alt had some pretty cool Rock vibes on the chart, Which means either many of these jams cruised into 1987 Mainstream Rock or that list is gonna be "Dad Rock" heavy. Misses my top half, but will probably be top 30 on mainstream/
79. Showdown at Big Sky - Robbie Robertson Really felt nothing throughout this whole song.
78. Where Has Everybody Gone? - Pretenders never knew this existed? This was pretty bad and the 007 theme music failed miserably as did her vocals. When it comes to 007 theme music let's stick with Duran Duran.
77. Never Let Me Down - David Bowie Not exactly memorable David Bowie material. Still more uptempo than all his 90's and on music.
76. Beautiful Imbalance - Thrashing Doves This one was great. Little 80's sophistipop never hurts.
75. Fear Is Never Boring -The Bears This was too simple ,and hokey for me. 'nuff said.
74. She Comes On - Wire Train I loved this one. Had a lot of Spanish Rock vibes. Good melody, great chorus. This was the kind of Modern Rock that sounded good without synths overkill.
73. Just Like Fire Would - The Saints The music here was already just there, but those vocals were the big tune out for me.
72. Mercy - Steve Jones this kind of rock vibe is a tad too uneventful for my taste. I just hope we don't run into a bunch of these songs on Mainstream or else that list is gonna suck.

Here comes a great set of extras that would have contributed to a more exiting RD.
Crowded House World Where You Live Aside from a couple of Top 40 charting hits I wasn't too big on Crowded House. This first time listen was pretty decent. Vocally these British bands wee spectacular which made me like their songs a whole lot more.
ABC - When Smokey Sings Here we go. I loved when the big 80's Sophistipop/synthpop bands went a little Motown. that continuous bass coupled with brass was so every enticing. Harps, Violins, Horns, synths gave the song layers and layers of melody. This particular song was soo Motown it was even about Smokey Robinson. Also a personal Top 10 song of mine.
Bananarama - I Heard a Rumour let's continue with that 80's perfection. Love the SAW injected vibe this song brought to the charts. Uplifting dance music actually made for dancing. I'm starting to notice a trend here with Alternative Rock shutting out the Hi_NRG songs the way mainstream Did with hair metal. Not cool. AT least Poptart chart knew better. here is a band you can also find in my current weekly music chart, and in the top 10.
Pet Shop Boys with Dusty Springfield - What Have I Done to Deserve This? I'm simply appalled at the Modern Rock chart. How did this masterpiece miss out. One of their biggest hits ever and one of the times I took this band to #1 on my personal charts. Dusty Springfield added that heavenly sounding layer to the melody with the vocals in the chorus and backups.
ABC- The Night You Murdered Love These extras just keep getting better. Another classic song. This one had all the proper 007 theme music vibe you could ask for. Classy, sophisticated and passionate lyrics.
a-ha - The Living Daylights Not as great as Duran Duran's "A View To A Kill" but certainly comes close to the top 3 007 theme songs of all time. My top 20 would have fared so different with the addition of these last five songs.
Was (Not Was) Spy in the House of Love A lot of ways an ABC song without Martin Fry's vocals This was surely the best song from this band. That Dinosaur thing was silly, but this was proper class.
The Pogues with Kristy MacColl Fairytale of New York Boy did I come crashing down after that Christmas diddy. Nice for X-mas time, but not for my listening pleasures.
The Comsat Angels - The Thought That Counts Back these first time ever ,never before, heard listens. This was passable, but not what moved me in 1987.
Stabilizers - One Simple Thing Pretty good first time listen.Just enough instrumental layers to keep me enticed. Love that breakdown.
Crowded House - Something So Strong One of those better hits I was talking about. I like this one. very nice melody.
UB40 - Maybe Tomorrow Is UB40 still on this RD or am I thinking of the upcoming Pop RD? Anyway this one here is a bit toooooooo UB40 for me. I think I prefer them as a cover band?
Big Audio Dynamite - Hollywood Boulevard There was a groovy george Michael beat buried in there somewhere, but I don't think Joe Clash's vocals served the purpose for this style music.
The The - Sweet Bird of Truth Didn't recall this one at all. This sounded more like Art of Noise than 80's goodness, and was vocally challenged. He sounded like "John" Lordi in the verses.
Cabaret Voltaire - Here to Go These guys were definitely jumping on the Pseudo Echo train. Sounds like a song I would have loved if it had gone top 40 on the pop chart.
Yello - Oh Yeah Oh yeah I knew this one from KPWR saturday night Mix nights. It had no lyrics to boast, but the bassline was a serious hook and it had great big 80's percussion.
Howard Jones - All I Want I think the world had cooled off on Howard Jones by 1987. This was still a mighty fine Sophistipop song. Love the melody in the prechorus. The "All I Want" chorus was a bit over the top, but it did its purpose towards the end of the song fusing both verses, and chorus melodies nicely. Funny ,but I don't recall charting this?
Beastie Boys - No Sleep Till Brooklyn probably one of the two song I can stomach from this band and it's all because of the guitar strums. You take that away ,and you have nothing ,but three clowns screaming nonsense at you, and with horrible tones. It still would not make it out of my bottom 20 tho.
Duran Duran - Skin Trade Thank you for ending this set with something i can sit back and sway to. Not the biggest Duran Duran hit, but still a song I could easily slot in my top 40 songs on this list

I'm pissed that I missed this, but you probably could have guessed that.
I'm not really familiar with most of the songs that have went out so far. The only real complaint I have is that, even with my lack of familiarity with the list as a whole, I still feel comfortable saying that "Real Wild Child" should have been bottom 30 with a bullet. There's a very real chance it would have been my #100 here.
(Okay, that's not true, that awful Mick Jagger song likely would have been at the bottom. Let's say #99, then.)

The common thread between this set of extras is that they all charted on Mainstream Rock. One song will be getting its own post. Out of this set, only "Don't Need a Gun" and "Weapons of Love" will be ranked on Mainstream Rock, with the rest of them also being extras on there. Eight extras from the last set also qualify to be in this set - "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For", "Good Times", "Time Will Crawl", and "Bullet the Blue Sky" can all be ranked on there, while both Los Lobos songs, "Lil' Devil", and "Detox Mansion" are also extras on there. A few notes on these: -Yes, "Little Wing" is a Jimi Hendrix cover. -I hadn't heard "Coming Up Close" until it incidentally came up in a playlist I was listening to a few days ago. It's great, would have made my top 10. -"Alone Again Or" is a cover of 60s psych band Love's signature song. Not sure why it even charted on Mainstream Rock, but we ranked it on Troy's 80s Underground Rankdown, where it made the top 10. Would've made my top 25 here. Artist | Song | YE# | Peak | Video | Sting | Little Wing | #111 | #13 | | 'Til Tuesday | Coming Up Close | #115 | #13 | | Bourgeois Tagg | I Don't Mind at All | #120 | #14 | | Peter Himmelman | Waning Moon | #123 | #14 | | Sting | We'll Be Together | #126 | #14 | | Billy Idol | Don't Need a Gun | #127 | #14 | | Steve Earle & The Dukes | I Ain't Ever Satisfied | #129 | #15 | | The Truth | Weapons of Love | #151 | #18 | | Mondo Rock | Primitive Love Rites | #154 | #19 | | David + David | Ain't So Easy | #190 | #29 | | The Damned | Alone Again Or | #195 | #30 | |

So, yeah...this charted on both rock formats and somehow only managed to be an extra on both. It was much closer to making the Mainstream Rock list, however - it was #102 on that year-end list. EXTRA
Don't Dream It's Over Crowded House

falling behind on these extras, DIAMANTE's new singles ,and haven't even started previewing mainstream rock Rd, so here goes another huge ultra musical review, Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark - We Love YouStarting off with an amazing 80's band. I know we are never gonna get to rank "Enola Gay" and Electricity", but I would have loved to rank this one. Not a big pop hit, but it really brings together the best of their poppy "If You leave" era and the underrated "So In Love" romantic era. Prince - Sign "O" the TimesNot the first time Prince cruised on to Modern Rock chart. I remember KROQ playing "Darling Niki" and my Favorite "Erotic City". This one is ok. Stand out being the vocals. Funny enough I prefer this song on this list than a pop one. Interesting to see what would happen to Prince on a Alternative RD? The Ward Brothers - C ross That BridgeI love that I'm constantly discovering 80's songs in these extras. Especially these sophistipop wonders. Obviously inspired by the New Romantic style of ABC ,and Spandau Ballet. A massive hook of a classy bassline is the song's strength. If you like this check out the California based Cock Robin. Same great music vibe. The Other Ones - Holiday Big difference from the song that we ranked which I loved BTW. This one was very uptempo like B52's song, but without the vocal goodies of that band. The male singer here kinda brought the song to a silly level, but it's still something I could easily sway into. This song and that other song we ranked would have caused a huge HD in numbers. Wang Chung - Let's GoGotta love your 80's Sophistipop duos. I would have ranked this one even higher than "Hypnotize Me". China Crisis Best Kept SecretFirst time listen. Great song gave me strong Tears For Fears music vibes U2 - I n God's CountryMy famous very non deserving #100 that should have been #66 song from Mainstream '88. I would have given this a much higher rank here, but I fear it still wouldn't crack my top 50. It just sounds too much like "Where The Streets have No Name". Concrete Blonde - Still in HollywoodI still wasn't too much into the guitar oriented Modern Rock sound back then. It was This was o.k. Sounds like Hole showing up a few years early. For me it was the wrong time, because I still either into the sophistipop or the New wave style for this format. I probably would do better with this song on a Mainstream Rock format. Pseudo Echo - FunkytownOWEEEEE The NRG injected here was ridiculously over the top, and it was exactly what i craved. You guys have no idea where I ranked "Living In A Dream" , but remember this. I would have ranked this one at least two slots higher. Simply Red - The Right ThingInjecting a little class onto the modern rock vibe. "Red's" unique vocals added that special flavour that only Simply Red song's had. My favorite will always be "Money's Too Tight To Mention", but this one is still a full on "blue Eyed Soul" wonder. The The with Neneh Cherry- Slow Train to DawnThe "Buffalo Stance" chick didn't add much to the song. She has nice tones, but the song would have worked better with just "Jon" The The. The song just didn't work as a duet. Actually I might have liked it even more with just her on vocals. Bananarama - I Can't Help ItA big Inspiration for the later sound of talo NRG of the 90's. Love the dance vibe this one has. This is still my favorite style of vocal arrangemnets when it come to dance and pop. I always wanted them to do a duet with Rick Astley. Bring England together with Australia. That would have been epic. Siouxsie & The Banshees - The Passengerdamn this would have been super high on my list. Much better version that Iggy's original. There is a Spanish Rock song with this same melody. a-ha - Cry WolfThis is the one I remember charting. Love the production of this song. Beastie Boys - GirlsThis could be the one song in history I hate that is about girls. I remember this travesty all too well. I also remember it straight out frightened me. I wonder what PULSE would do with a song who's lyrics are about nothing but girls? In the past this has been a topic that hasn't clicked when sung by Hair Metal bands so what about three vocally challenged boys? Peter Gabriel & Kate Bush- Don't Give UpI get both Kate Bush and Tori Amos confused. Which is the "Raisen Bran Girl"? Anyway I think I prefer Kate Vocally, but this song is a whole bunch of waiting around for something exiting to happen. which never does. Pet Shop Boys - It's a SinSo we got two dancing with Buddas songs and no Pet Shop Boys. What The Actual hell was wrong with this 87' Modern Rock chart? This was an original Bobby O production that got reworked for the official 1987 release. The new version was more theatrical and layered, but still hung on that Hi-NRG melody. #1 in The U.K.. #9 on the Pop, Top 10 on Dance. This Alternative chart is not fooling anybody. original Bobby O Demo. Duran Duran - Meet El PresidenteThis Duran Duran song while still possessing an upbeat vibe was not one of my favorites among other DD classics. It felt like they were trying to reload "one of their big 80's hits like "New Moon On Monday", but just couldn't get the melody to fall into place. The chorus here was the weakest link. Still probably would have sneaked into my top 50 on this list. U2 - Where the Streets Have No NameNot very many people can admit that they really didn't care for this song, but I'm one of those. It's very guitar oriented. That I like, but it feels like U2 going lite. It further pissed me off those ranking the much more epic "With Or Without You" under this one.

So after doing some thinking, I'm going to be switching up the previews to a more guessable form...movements. I may return back to the old way when we reach the top 10, however. #70 preview: peacebone + disassociative: 81 Boing Boom Tschak: 87 American Idiot: 90 rowellfarm490: 83 Geometrical: 82 aerodynamite: 81 gonecountry: 74 Doc Indie Party Rock: 69 Daryl the Beryl: 69 wheatsquares33: 72 campbellssoup: 74 craziaskowboi: 69 House Lannister: 68 Juanca: 70

I usually like Tom's music fine enough, but this was...not good. 70

70. Jammin' Me - Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers This one is pure fun with the lyrics. Sounds more like his early 80's material which I preferred anyway. not surprised I gave it the highest rank here.

If Mick Jagger embarrassing himself could make this list, I suppose it's fitting that a fifth-rate Stones knockoff could also make it. 69

Come as You Are - Peter Wolf This was fine for Peter on his own. I also liked "lights Out", but I doubt he was going to get something as stellar as "Centerfold" without the J. Geils Band backing him up.
