62. Arizona Sky - China Crisis this was pretty good first time listen. I was getting a bit impatient with the intro, but I'm glad I kept an open mind. His vocals sound a bit like Elvis Costello, but the music was the real highlight. Kinda sounds like an Elvis Costello song too.

Arizona Sky China Crisis
Year-End Placing: #40 Chart Peak: #4
693 points Standard Deviation: 23.806 I'm sitting here with China Crisis greatest hits CD in my hands w/ 16 hits (including the great song "King in a Catholic Style [Wake Up]") released in 1992 and Arizona is nowhere to be found on that CD. So clearly I'm not alone in my assertion that this song kinda blew. Between that (my #99) and the PIL (#100), I had blood coming out of my ears.

61. Paper in Fire - J ohn MellencampI guess John Mellencamp just isn't Alt enough for some listeners? Eh I do the same thing on mainstream Rock with Alt songs, but this is a good song ,and I hear why it made the Modern Rock chart. It could easily be Midnight Oil or even R.E.M with different vocals. Even INXS started sounding like this.

I don't know, I've expected utter mediocrity from a band with a name like BoDeans and instead I've found both of the songs we've ranked by them to be pretty nice listens. 60

57. Love Removal Machine - The Cult easily one of the best jams the have written. AC/DC is actually a good comparison. I would have also welcomed Jet and Airbourne. They surely got the vibe right that rockers wanted in the 80's. For me it was like Jim Morrison fronting some high octane NRG driven Hair metal wonder. All they needed were some Kiss pyrotechnics, and mission accomplished.

Some comments on the first batch of songs. Most were first listens, except 3 (those with **) 100. Long Slide (97) / 99. Thank You Girl (98): Similar bluesy style stuff with bad vocals that were clear bottom 5 for me. **98. Let's Work (16): oh, no! :(( this was a hit in radios back home in Peru, and the intro was used in several long radio and TV commercials. And it was a personal chart-topper. I LOVE that Latin-influenced intro and the overall fun, dance, Latin melody and vibe, with Mick's rocker attitude. The vocal and musical bridge hit the right spot with me, too. After several years without listening to it, I downloaded it a handful years ago, and I've listened to it several times especially in long drives :) I can see this being a bit too pop for folks here, but still #98 is quite too harsh for this IMO. 97. V. Thirteen (80): OK but simple melody, with little variety that makes it a bit boring halfway through I'm looking forward to finally rank two songs from them that I really like... 96. I Wanna Be a Flintstone (37): I initially had it in my bottom 20, but I after a few listens I got hooked with the beat, instrumental and catchiness. Resembled a bit of the punk funk of B-52s. Sort of a guilty pleasure discovery. 95. Radio Waves (89): The synth pop sound was nice, but the melody was lacking and the ramblings and nonsenses in verses took it down several notches. 94. Black Light Trap (75): I liked this big band sound much more than their other song. Much more interesting at least. Both have equally bad vocals though 93. This Is the World Calling (99): This just didn't go anywhere. It had potential but the execution was disappointing and forgettable -and dragging. And that bridge was annoying. 92. The Wanderer (96): Not a bad cover, but I prefer the original, and this just felt out of place in this list. 91. Dark Light (45): The instrumental simply captured me. Some hints of Dire Straits. **90. Twenty Killer Hurts (57): Good guitar riff and interesting musical arrangement. I heard this for the first time in the early 00s when I used to buy CDs from a pal DJ who would burn his own 80s long club mixes accompanied by a handful of full 80s songs. I liked it enough back then and still do. 89. Bed of Lies (90): Weak vocals and not strong melody for me. **88. Day-In Day-Out (26): I remember the video being popular back home, while the song receiving just minimum airplay. I felt it was a bit too long and with weak melody. With time, I've grown to like the production a lot, and appreciate the melody better. 87. Caravan of Love (100): I don't mind a cappella or minimally produced stuff, but the minimum for me is that the singer have good vocals to showcase, not this kind of limited, affected ones 86. Sentimental Hygiene (74): It was in my 80s zone for most of the time sue to its monotony, but the instrumental eventually made me like it a bit more and I gave it extra points. 85. Trust Me to Open My Mouth (84): Just an OK melody, but the instrumental was interesting, fun, as most Squeeze hits. 84. Gunning for the Buddha (91): Unremarkable stuff, and it didn't sound like Modern Rock 83. Shakin' Shakin' Shakes (97): I'd chart this higher in Mainstream 82. Please (67): I do like the lush production, especially the synth strings and drums, but the melody could've been much stronger. 81. Darling It Hurts (70): Similarly, this had strong production but not as strong melody to me.

...and the rest.
60. Only Love - BoDeans The music was good, but This really needed some Bryan Adams vocals for me to enjoy it. I just don't care for BoDeans vocal abilities.
59. 4th of July - X Another very unimpressive offering from X. Here is a question why does a punk band wanna sound like Bruce Springsteen?
58. Jane's Getting Serious - Jon Astley I can see what Jon's vocals might tune some out, but they really fit the mood of the song. It's basically that cool bass with some guitar strums so his vocals are really wht push the song forward. As for Jane? Oh my I can get serious too. :O
56. The Right Stuff - Bryan Ferry This one had a lot of 80's class. That's pretty much all it takes to get me fully enticed.
The direction this Rank down is going is beginning to concern me now.

Maybe if that ending didn't happen or they didn't scream for no good reason? It's tough ranking these because they're all at least competent. But little things add up. Thoughts on last nite's reveals: Wasn't expecting Petty out so soon! Jammin Me is no Free Fallin' or Runnin' Down a Dream, but it's still Tom Petty. Come As You Are was just a fun song. You can feel it oozing out of it. Not sure if it's nostalgia that influenced my ranking for Real Wild One, but it did click for me. Kinda felt like Arizona Sky was just a weak song. Man, I guess John Mellencamp is just not gonna get love from you. May have to boost his earlier 80s stuff just to get it a proper ranking? No, he's not related to RickRoll. But Jane could have used more guitar to be taken seriously. Also, anyone else getting She Blinded Me with Science vibes?

The extras in this set all appeared on a Billboard chart that isn't Mainstream Rock. One song is getting a highlight post. Charted on the Hot 100 (any songs that made a H100 rankdown have their reveals linked): "Lessons in Love" (#12), "Mary's Prayer" (#23), "Misfit" (#42).
