The breathing is a ridiculous complaint tbh. The voice is an instrument that requires a ton of air to put out a good sound. You have to breathe to sing, and you have to take big breaths to make sure you have the breath support to sing well. If you start paying attention to breaths when you're listening to music, you will hear them prominently in like 90% of the songs you listen to. Unless they are very intentionally editing them out, they're still there in the final cut, lol.
Like, listen to how much air Martina audibly sucks in before the iconic sustained note at the end of "A Broken Wing". Or the short rhythmic breaths Reba takes between each line in the first verse of "You Lie". Faith Hill's loud inhalations during the verses of "Cry". Hell, you can even hear Thomas Rhett gasping for breath between every line in the first verse of "Be A Light", and that's not even a song that would present any sort of vocal challenge whatsoever.
Honestly, I think an artist's ability to breathe is a huge aspect of their artistry. Like, when you hear Martina breathe, the intentional rhythmic placement makes you realize just how much power and control she has as a vocalist. Maybe Chrissy is still growing in that department, but to me her breathing sounded totally normal here. Lol. Like, listen to "Champagne Night" alongside this one, and I think the breathing is even louder in that song...

And I'm just sitting over here like I can't hear any noticeable breathing.

Wow, that was a really touching video treatment! That was a nice twist that I honestly didn't see coming, and I loved it.

Great music video!! I love checking out music videos, Hope there are more music videos with meaningful storylines like this. Only know a few this year, this one and Ashly McBride series, maybe Broken Up by Mitch. (Also love Classic by Cam for visual). Last year was just 2, The Good Ones by Gabby and Sugar Coat by LBT (still the best country music video to me).

Hearing her breathe isn't the problem... the fact that she can't muster up enough breath, or to breathe properly while singing is. Her pitch is horrendous and her voice never sounds like it is supported by her breathing. It could be simply because she isn't breathing from her diaphragm, or that her weight is making it difficult for her, but either way it's hard to ignore and makes her voice very unpleasant to my ears. I'll probably catch a lot of flack for this post, but when I listen to her that's what I hear and it drives me crazy. It's worse for me when she performs live.

Amazing video. So relevant. Definitely made me appreciate the song more. I’m indifferent on her voice but the song is catchy enough and the video treatment really elevated the message.

And I'm just sitting over here like I can't hear any noticeable breathing. Same for me. It may end up being noticeable whenever she does live performances, but I don't hear it in the studio recordings…?

I've been liking posts in here over time and never coming in to put in my two cents so here goes: I adore both "Talking to God" and "Actress." Both songs are very touching to me and I love the lyricism, production, and vocal delivery of both. Both are A+ efforts for me. Now, about the music video: that was a shocking and very touching treatment! I love when music videos do things like this; it reminded me of some of the videos Reba would do...when I think about the MV for "Talking to God," I think about the MV for "What Do You Say" in particular, or Martina's "Concrete Angel." Both of those other two had twists at the end that are so powerful, you have to be Tim Man not to be moved to tears by them. Can I also point out something very interesting I noticed? When the scenes of that children's book were depicted in the "Talking to God" music video, I saw a little girl who looked quite familiar. So I went back to the Caylee Hammack music video for "Redhead" to see if my hunch was correct......and sure enough, it was!! The little girl with the red hair in "Talking to God" is the same girl with Reba plastered all over her room who wreaks havoc on her family in "Redhead" !!! Just some cool trivia I thought I'd point out about the two videos lol. Now as for the breathing complaints..... that's how one talks, let alone sings. To talk or sing, you gotta be able to breathe so that your vocal cords can produce the sound that comes out when you talk or sing. Chrissy doesn't breathe any differently on "Talking to God" then Faith Hill does on "Cry," Carrie Underwood does on "Low," or Sara Evans does on "A Little Bit Stronger," so I don't understand the complaints about the breathing at all lol. I hope that even if Chrissy can't secure a radio hit that she can use her name power as an actress to put forth an album anyway because she's got a sale from me.

I’m a little surprised it was completely DOA, but not too much. While 2020 has seen a bit of a turnaround in women succeeding at radio, unestablished female acts really haven’t been able to get any traction at all.

I love this song and the video was quite touching; what a shame country radio is turning a deaf ear towards it because it's such a catchy, well-written song. As for the breathing, I don't get the issue either. She sounds fine to me!

Taylor Swift's first album was produced with all the sharp little breaths in between lines still in there, and I remember finding that very distracting. And I'm sure there's breathing in thousands of songs where I just haven't noticed it! I guess I can't judge people with that complaint about this song too harshly, but tying what's essentially a production choice to her weight is... not cute, not necessary, and not helpful.
Edit: Now I'm shuffling through my music, and every song I've come across so far has audible breathing on the track, including ones I would have guessed didn't lol
