Anyone who feels Mickey isn’t at all a victim of a prejudiced world - at least within the confines of the country music community - should listen to Jana Kramer’s podcast last week during which Mickey was a guest. Mickey was essentially interrogated and her personal experiences were being ridiculed; as if anyone has a right to do that to anyone... If you want insight regarding what Mickey is fighting here with this song, it’s all in the podcast. The mentality displayed by Jana, and more so Michael Caussin is exactly why this song is important and needs to be heard. If y'all remember that poster is a fan of Jana Kramer...

I know this is getting heavy exposure on Spotify, but with +700,000 plays in 4 days, it has already out-streamed "What Are You Gonna Tell Her?" which has been out for 3 months.
I really hope this turns into something for her. I'm absolutely in love with it.
I hope it can be a hit even if it doesn't end up being a radio hit, kind of like "Follow Your Arrow" by Kacey Musgraves.

This needs to get the attention of the general public that DOESN'T listen to country or pay attention to major Country playlists. This is something I believe current BLM protesters would cling on to, but may not necessarily be exposed to unless it got some kind of high profile exposure. This song is too good!

Over the past few years Kane Brown and Jimmie Allen have really taken off. So I don’t think there’s a huge race problem in the country industry. Country music in general is overwhelmingly white just like how R&B is overwhelmingly black. I don’t think there’s a hidden agenda against Mickey because of her race. Her gender might be another story though.

Her gender might be another story though. Being a woman is definitely a strike against her, and I have no idea if her race is another or not, but I would like to think it helps her stand out a bit, although I can’t think of any black women who have had success in the genre. Unfortunately I also don’t see message songs like this and “What Are You Gonna Tell Her” having any kind of success in country radio, as good as they are and as much as a lot of country radio listeners need to hear such messages.

I really wish Capitol Nashville would at least try to send it for adds. It doesn’t hurt to try...either way, this is a song that Country listeners need to listen to.
This and What Are You Gonna Tell Her are so powerful and moving. It’s time Country radio (and the Country music industry as a whole) start paying attention to her.

Country music in general is overwhelmingly white just like how R&B is overwhelmingly black. I don’t think there’s a hidden agenda against Mickey because of her race. Her gender might be another story though. There is quite a bit to unpack here... in short, it is very clear there is an enormous race problem in country music. There is also a huge gender problem in country music which is discussed quite a bit. The fact that Guyton is the only woman of color signed to a major label points to how the intersection of race (an issue in the genre) and gender (an issue in the genre) negatively impacts an artist's chances of success. Implicit biases based upon race and gender operate separately but work together against women of color like Guyton. I do not want for this to feel directed towards you at all. In fact, I'm glad you brought it up as I feel like race discussions are not discussed in country whereas gender frequently is. It is interesting, however, that in this post, race was dismissed as a non-issue by naming two successful Black artists, but gender was accepted as an issue even when we have far more than two consistent successful women in the genre. Just to get an idea of how absent people of color are from the current mainstream country genre... Here's some people presently producing top 40 songs with some frequency on Country Airplay: People of color:Kane Brown Jimmie Allen Women:Maren Morris Carrie Underwood Kelsea Ballerini Miranda Lambert Lauren Alaina Carly Pearce Ashley McBryde Maddie & Tae Likely to join soon, Gabby Barrett, Ingrid Andress Women of color:
... In short, there are much more white women producing hits than people of color (men included) and NO women of color producing hits. And, as we know, it is not due to a lack of talent/quality available, which is the argument often used against women of country.

Could it be that less black people want to be country artists as opposed to white people? I also don’t see a single Latino or Asian country singer represented on the chart. If anything, next to whites, blacks are the best represented in country music. There is still a long way to go as far as diversity but it’s a start. I will say I would love to see more POC give country music a try. I feel like there’s untapped potential with a lot of the Mexican-American “cowboys” we see in Texas and the rural farming communities.

Personally I don't think Country Music as a genre with it's diverse representative bodies makes a huge effort to be inclusive to minorities. I like in the UK and sort of found country music by accident, but after watching the Ken Burns documentary I got the impression the genre roots were a lot more inclusive that what we see these days on the radio. A bit like the falacy that women weren't interested in engineer/maths degrees - if you have no representation you feel excluded from those fields and discouraged to attempt a career there. I love Mickey and I think she is doing a lot of the hard work to try and change the perspective on country. On top of that both songs she recently released were fenomenal, so props to her as a songwritter as well. If radio isn't interested I hope she had a career a bit like Kacey and finds sucess anyway. Black like me is a message everyone needs to hear.

Is there any status with this song? With the daily harassment Mickey Guyton receives from the racists online who are apparently changing the station every time it comes on, you’d think this was skyrocketing.

I think only satellite radio is playing it. All the screenshots and videos I've seen shared to her social media of people hearing it on the radio look to be listening to things like The Highway rather than their local country station. A few weeks back I asked sabre14 about it and he said that only 1 reporting terrestrial station had reportedly added it at the time, and despite sending it to radio her label has not actually pushed for it to be played.

Heaven Down Here sounds like a radio hit to me. Good message that ties a to what’s going on right now, but is something that is accessible for radio (although i think the other songs are as well....🙄🙄)

Give us an add date! That is a jam. And just perfectly non-controversial enough for country radio to bite.

The chorus is so catchy, the production is big but still let’s her vocals shine, especially those adlibs in the final chorus. I’ve loved the last two releases but by country radio standards, this is it. I could easily see Kane or Thomas releasing this and getting a number one, so I really hope country radio sees her with this and gives it a chance.

“What Are You Gonna Tell Her?” is stunning, but it’s “Black Like Me” that just hits everything out of the park for me and should have been a smash radio single.
This new one doesn’t do it for me as much, but I still root for her with whatever they finally send to radio.

I’m trying to expand my music taste lol Just like when it comes to the white artists in the country genre, the women do it better. Mickey is definitely IT. I'm dying for her to get a big enough break to have an album come out. It's sad that the conversation seems to have turned to her having an EP coming out this fall (according to Kurt above), because previously there were sources that stated her "album" would be out this fall. Still, better than nothing. She's been getting more attention and consistent press and music released in 2020 than she has in her career thus far aside from the brief moment when her debut single looked like it might be a hit for clear back in 2015. I have faith we'll get an album sooner or later though, especially as new artists seem to be getting records out with or without a hit (though it would be preferable for them to actually TRY something jfc...) at an increasing rate lately. *fingers crossed*

How is Heaven Down Here doing on streaming? Any updates? It has 67,272 streams on Spotify, so unless it’s really strong on other platforms pretty meh. It’s my least favorite song I’ve heard from her, but probably her best bet for a hit of of the recent tracks we’ve heard.
