Who do they promote that is urban on their label? This feel like another excuse to not put fundings in theIr urban department. I don’t like this move.

I don’t like this move. they will use the terms hip-hop and R&B instead which has been mostly used anyway. edit Mediabase uses the terms Urban and Urban AC for their charts while Billboard uses R&B/Hip-Hop and Adult R&B.

grammy use urban too. "Best Urban Contemporary Album" originally they had "Best R&B Album" and "Best Contemporary R&B Album" but back in 2012 when they merged the male/female categories and revamp lots of categories, they removed "Best Contemporary R&B Album" and only kept "the Best R&B Album". but one year later they added "Best Urban Contemporary Album".

the term R&B also known as Rhythm and Blues came about in the late 1940's by a then writer for Billboard who later became a big part of Atlantic Records which was probably the biggest R&B label of the 50's .the previous term Race Records was offensive to some. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jerry_Wexler

Am I the only one who has no issue with that term. It's a good identifier musically like country music is. I mean yes we can call it rnb or hip hop, rap, alternative rnb, soul music but urban feels like an good umbrella term to refer to all those genres. I feel like its much to do with nothing but I could care less one way or the other if it pushes progressive, $$$, investment into artist development and all the much bigger issues.

^ I feel like just about all of those quotes - whether they're for OR against the Republic move - are completely missing the point.

yeah I agree. I think the word "urban" served to erase Black art more than anything — by putting everything Black musicians do in this arbitrary category. Black people make pop music, too. They make country (they actually started country) music, too. We need to be more inclusive in those other genres if we're getting rid of the "urban," though. So Republic needs to make actual changes & not let this be a performative publicity stunt.

Didn't the Grammys stop airing pretty much all the R&B/hip-hop categories during the main show years ago? Seems like that's a bigger issue than what they call the award..

You cannot just erase an existing genre that's widely embraced by its consumers...
This is kind of a stupid stunt to me. It feels like a way to dudge the real structural problems within the music industry.

What term will they and should we use instead? R&B? It seems most of these articles are suggesting they'll be calling it by the actual genres ("Hip-hop and R&B").

Yep, I think they all have gone crazy, I mean do African Americans protest against the category "urban" or if they change the name, will they start playing more "urban" music on mainstream stations. Adult urban or real soul music is totally out of pop radio. If radio stations want to show their attitude, they should start playing real African American music. I remember 1994, when after 1993 being probably the most successful year for "urban" music, they changed the formats, so there would be more "white" music in the pop radio and a lot of RnB acts disappeared from these charts completely. I think it is all PR and not the real thing, sorry to say...

Back in the 80's and early 90's it was called just Black Airplay. And those stations played George Michael, Lisa Stansfield, Paula Abdul, Taylor Dayne and even Madonna. None of those people were even black.
