Lead vocalist of Men At Work. Whenever I read his name in my head I always say it like Griffin says "HEEEEEY!" in this segment EXTRA
Hold Me Colin Hay
Overall Year-End Position: #227 Chart Peak: #41 Chart Weeks: 6 Total Chart Points: 47 Feel free to share your thoughts on this song below! Love this song. It only went to #98 on the Top 100, if I remember correctly. This was a great album, IMO. He was coming off the failed "Two Hearts" Men at Work album and the great Everything I Need single that barely scraped the Top 50. This really is a good album. Looking for Jack (about Jack Nicholson and LA Laker games) and Can I Hold You are the two other standouts. Glad to see Colin's profile increased from the absolute pits o 1987.

The three songs that I would have ranked the lowest that I already knew are still in. So that probably says a lot about how I would have done here. ![:giggle:](//storage.proboards.com/1258812/images/KYziZwTotWGtjvzyvGqr.gif) I would not have had "Shakedown" particularly low, but Seger has definitely made better songs, too.

I was lowkey hoping Keep Your Hands to Yourself would make the top half. Dashed again!
Let's look at the songs left in my bottom 10:
#92: Looks like they recorded it while watching late night Cinemax. #95: Vocals might be one of the most grating things I've heard since I started ranking these rock songs.
Hopefully my #3 and #6 songs stick around a while longer.

80. Hearts on Fire - Bryan AdamsThis was the most 1984 Bryan Adams song on the RD. Also the best one off that record. 79. Bed of Lies - CruzadosThis is one of the Alt cruise overs I still felt sounded worthy of being upgraded on this list. 78. Shakedown - Bob SegerThis one had some wild NRG to it. Also the last time I charted Bob Seger. 77. Goodbye Saving Grace - J on Butchermy footnote next to the song's title pretty much sums up my thoughts. Remember Lionel Richie "Running With The Night". This one sounds like part two. You should see all the footnotes I leave next to songs. 76. Rock Me - Great WhiteNot surprising that I gave this song the highest rank. Great one, but not one of my favorites from them. I only hope we get to rank "Stick It". This is their most Ratt sounding song. 75. Gypsy Blood - Mason RuffnerThe music was passable, this was realy just a first time listen that did nothing for me among this stellar group of songs. So when did Gypsy become a bad word? Were they not depicted as hot Lycanthrope chicks in 80's flicks? 74. The Best Man in the World - Ann WilsonPretty good for a Heart song not under the name Heart. 73. Can'tcha Say (You Still Believe Me)/Still in Love - BostonThis song does not stay in ballad mode for too long. Always loved Boston when they went full on epic guitar rock. #73 is an embarresment to high octane arena rock. I don't even try to understand any rank under top 40 for a song like this. Funny enough the #1 song from 'Third Stage' "Amanda" was the one Boston song I didn't care for. I just pretend it doesn't exist and skip it when I listen to the album. 72. It's in the Way That You Use It - Eric ClaptonI forget if this was a rerecorded version of the original or what, but I liked this one a whole lot. Sounded like perfect Pool Hall rock music. 71. Endless Nights - Eddie MoneyNot one of my Eddie Money favorites. It didn't even make my top half. It does have a wonderful melody tho. 70. Hell in a Bucket - Grateful DeadNot bad for Miller time rock. I just couldn't get this band's songs into my top 80. Loved the leather and lace babe in the MV. 69. That Ain't Love - REO SpeedwagonThis was a good rediscovery. Great chorus. It also missed my top 50 in my personal charts. Correction if only they kept doing arena Powerballads like "Keep On Loving You". 68. Shakin' Shakin' Shakes - Los LobosI just didn't find any use for this band outside of the Ritchie Valens covers. Sorry. I also struggled with what to put in my bottom 10 outside of my bottom 5. 67. Tearing Us Apart - Eric ClaptonEric did pretty good with injecting some other instruments vibes and not just doing Blues rock. That sound can get boring real quick. 66. Time Will Crawl - David BowieI guess the better of the two, but his vocals sounded kinda off. I feel like this could have just as easy been a Rolling Stones song. 65. Never Enough - Patty Smyth This one was pretty good, but it ain't no "The Warrior" nor "Goodbye To You". So how does this song merit a bottom 10? 64. Ready or Not - Lou GrammThis one anchors my top 50. It had a lot of Hair Metal vibe in that bass line. Strong chorus and vocals, but i still kinda liked "Midnight Blue" a bit more. 63 . I Wanna Go Back - Eddie MoneyOne of my favorites of the year. It felt like to two different songs the way it fuses into the chorus, but it still really worked because of the added brass. I better not see any of this bottom half treatment for Eddie once we get to "Shaken".62. These Times Are Hard for Lovers - John WaiteI feel like you have to go way back to The Babys ,and love their songs to really appreciate John Waite's picture perfect rock tones. Songs like "Midnight Rendezvous" and "Head First". "Change" was another big rock radio hit. Now this is the kind of Blues rock I can really melt into. The chorus drives the song to arena rock level. Powerful powerful stuff. You all need to fix the volume on your listening devices and turn it up to the max. I mean if you are not singing along to this by the second verse you are not surrendering to the music. Also on a side note: You can't say I didn't try, but you guys are killing off all the songs in my top 20 that don't require aqua net ,or are not Cars related. 61. Keep Your Hands to Yourself - The Georgia Satelliteswell at least we end off the night with giving this travesty the boot. We lost a lot of great melodic rock tonight, and I'm starting to get a little annoyed.

EXTRAS:
You Make Me Love You - Roger Hodgson Not as proggy as Supertramp can get. Thank goodness. This one was actually not bad. Sounded a bit like 80's Cliff Richard. In fact I really like it now that I compared it to Cliff. Don't know how high I would have ranked it, but that melody definitely deserved some top half love.
Hold Me - Colin Hay What in Hades was that intro. This sucked. Sounded like a song Howard Jones tried not to write. Collin definitely needed the rest of his Men to work out a decent song.
Things I Do for Money - The Northern Pikes never heard this before tonight. Sounds like something that might be spun on Modern Rock college radio. Not a fan.
Hot Love - Twisted Sister Twisted Sister works for me. I haven't heard this one in ages. Not too much work was put into it, but it was catchy n' melodic. Part of me feels like Dee wanted to fool us into thinking this was a new Sammy Hagar driving jam. I'd still give it a quick top 50 on this list.
Primitive Love Rites - Mondo Rock There is just enough 80's rock vibe here for me to upgragede it. I still find the chorus takes the song into a silly level.
I Could Have Been a Dreamer - Dio Definitely a song I would stick in my top 20. I hope we get to rank "Rainbow In The Dark".
Coming up Close - Til Tuesday This is not the Til Tuesday sound I liked. They were not really a full on 80's sounding band, but they had a few songs I really loved. This was surely not one of them.
Something in the Heart - Dave Mason You could hear the Steve Winwood influence in this. Makes sense since they were both from Traffic. I guess Rock radio figured Steve has better vocal tones. Mason's vocals don't really move me into a positive leaning direction. Thumbs up is for your upload more than the actual song.
Into the Night - Ace Frehley It actually is a Frehley's Comet from the album of the same name. This song was written by Russ Ballard who also wrote Ace's "New York City Groove". I love this heavy rock sound, but Ace as a vocalist never really clicked with me. Still that guitar solo takes me home.
**gonna do a few of the earlier extras that were not already covered on Alt and that I liked an charted.
Valerie - Steve Winwood Here is a great song by Steve Winwood that i would have ranked about 20 slots higher than "The Finer Things" which I ranked fairly high too. This song here is one melodic wonder and has that 80's production that makes the music sound so clear and crisp making great competition for arena rock.
Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now - Starship I bet my life there would be no love for "Mannequin" on this RD. Easily my favorite of the two Starship songs that charted on rock radio. A totally different sound than Airplane, but they did it right for 80's rock ballad lovers. I still prfer early 80's Jefferson Starship rock radio like "Find Your way Back", but this one does the job well.
Mony Mony - Billy Idol Another song I would have preferred ranking. Rock radio had the annoying habit of keeping an album's best single off the the YE Chart. I love this one. I know it s cover, but Billy made it his own.
Carrie - Europe "Carrie" is cool. I tad too pretty for me for a powerballad ,but a decent ballad at that. Gave it a modest #32 peak. Truth be told I would have rather ranked "Rock The Night" or even better "Cherokee" than "The Final Countdown" as well.
I've Been in Love Before - Cutting Crew Here is a sophistipop wonder I loved just as much as "I Just Died....". I actually give this one more repeat plays these days. The melody is drop dead gorgeous and the chorus is heaven in music form. That VH-1 upload has a perfect sound. If I were to make a top 10 of the most beautiful songs ever. This one would be in there.
Up next: Def Leppard and Kiss. My favorite English Metal band v.s my favorite American Metal band. back tomorrow night with that result.

80. Hearts on Fire (62): Correct one to go second, but still a bit too low, as it's still got some of the early BA strength. 79. Bed of Lies (86): I ranked it a bit higher than in Modern Rock. I could've ranked it even higher but I still see it as a prototype to the much stronger Wild Wild West ![:-/](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/undecided.png) 78. Shakedown (22): This made my personal top 15 back in '87. I still like its high-energy rock sound, including guitars, drums and horns and female vocals. And this a great song to drive to. I can see this being a bit too pop for some, but don't think it's deserving of a bottom quarter. 77. Goodbye Saving Grace (90): Sade did this much better with Sweetest Taboo --and I don't think that can be considered Mainstream Rock (?). I guess the rock guitar makes the difference? I really didn't get this being in the list. 76. Rock Me (68): I tried to give this first-listen a chance, as I got what they were going for. It felt a bit trying-too-hard to me, and the melody wasn't that strong. 75. Gypsy Blood (35): Huh?? This was one of my favorite discoveries. Great instrumental (guitar/drum combo), high-energy highway vibe that's always a treat to me, plus nice melody. Btw, I didn't see the term gypsy here as offensive, because it was used as a synonym to wanderer, roamer, not a reference to the Roma population... 74. The Best Man in the World (83): I love Ann's vocals, but I didn't get this song. The melody was too all over the place for me, some of the synth effects were a bit annoying, and the background female vocals seemed copy-pasted from another song. Quite a disappointment tbh. 73. Can'tcha Say (40): And this, on the contrary, was quite a surprising discovery. I LOVED this, and with a few more listens I could have ranked it even higher. Classic 70s harmonizing vocals, outstanding instrumentals with classic guitar sounds, and strong melody. I was hoping this would make it further than We're Ready. 72. It's in the Way That You Use It (89): My least favorite offering from Eric in this list. The melody was a bit lazy, simple, repetitive, and the instrumental wasn't as exciting or interesting as the other two. 71. Endless Nights (88): I do like several Eddie Money songs, and I could've ranked this higher in a pop or AC rank down, but this was just a bit too vanilla and safe for this list. 70. Hell In A Bucket (96): Well, this is simply a subgenre I don't care for. It was a first listen and I couldn't get into it at all. 69. That Ain't Love (24): Oh, no! :'( This received some airplay in pop stations in Peru -and I LOVED it! It made my personal top 5 and it was their last time to appear in my list. And despite not having heard it much, its melody always got stuck with me. I liked the lush synthpop production mixed with some good guitar and rocker vocals. And it's pretty catchy! Glad I helped it in this RD, but this is too low :( 68. Shakin' Shakin' (87): I ranked it a bit higher here, as it fit better this list than Modern Rock. I still find it very meh. 67. Tearing Us Apart (73): This has always felt like a song that could've been much better. Great pairing, some parts with good melody, and some interesting ideas in production. However, it never fully gelled with me. Partly it's the dancey, handclappy production that doesn't always fit the melody, or the under-developed chorus. Another case where I wanted to rank this higher (to support Tina!) but I just couldn't. 66. Time Will Crawl (79): I don't like the melody or production here as much as in Day-In. 65. Never Enough (56): This was a nice discovery! I only know of Downtown Train as a song by Patty before Sometimes Love.... The verses were great, but the chorus was a bit of a letdown. The bridge was nice. And seeing her dancing in the video was a treat. 64. Ready or Not (67): I was torn with this one. I moved it from my 40s to my 80s... but finally settled in my 60s. I liked the rock energy and production, but I couldn't avoid thinking that the chorus sounded more like a verse of a Joan Jett song ![:-/](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/undecided.png) that chorus should've been much stronger especially after the strong pre-chorus. The chorus was too anticlimactic to me. 63. I Wanna Go Back (46): OK, NO. I can understand tanking Endless Nights, but not this one. This sounded like a classic soft rock tune, with solid melody in verses and chorus. Also, if we're tanking Eddie and Eric, why are we not tanking BRUCE HORNSBY? Their stuff is much more AC. 62. These Times Are Hard for Lovers (50): This was another nice discovery! That chorus was ACE. Had the verses been a bit stronger, I would've easily ranked it higher... I still think I under-ranked it, considering that the pre-chorus and chorus melodies have been coming back every day since I finished my RD. Solid classic rock tune, that I had to download :) 61. Keep Your Hands to Yourself (65): I used to hate this song -and video. Time has helped me be a bit more lenient with the uniqueness of this track, especially the instrumental. I still don't care for the yodeling.

Given his discography it’s interesting it took 20 years for Seger to finally score his first #1 with Shakedown.
I really dig Tina’s help on Tearing Us Apart, I expected that top 50 for some reason. I find the intro (and the whole vibe really) similar to Lenny Kravitz’s, Are You Gonna Go my Way.

“Ready Or Not” & “These Times Are Hard For Lovers” have long been guilty pleasures of mine. And they still deliver today! absolutely. RoN is cheesy, but fun. I think John Waite got a raw deal w/ many of his singles - and don't get me started w/ his marvelous If Anybody Had a Heart from the About Last Night soundtrack. That was criminally overlooked.

I much preferred this song to Don't Wanna Fight on the other rankdown.

I thought I would be able to start at ~4pm today, but what I predicted might only be an hour-long trip out of the house turned into 3 and 1/2 hours. I'm here now though. Several of the #60-51 reveals disappointed me, so let's grind through them...
