Wait, how the hell is this made? How are dancers allowed to be around Gaga? They surely got tested beforehand.

What's the point of that made-up award for Gaga, when she'll win everything. This is boring af It's the renamed Vanguard Award apparently (we'll see if it's still called that next year).

it's definitely not the safest, but they created a social bubble for artists and crew and performed tests to ensure they wouldn't cause an outbreak. for how badly the US is doing right now, this is still risky and not the best message to send out, but it is not against any CDC recommendations I believe.

They are showing that something entertaining can be created even in these circumstances. Now we need other shows to follow this path. Covid-19 isn't going anywhere.

Its annoying though how they're not talking about how this is being filmed. Is any of this live? Are they artists all waiting around at home to find out?

I guess BEP has formally replaced Fergie with J Rey or whoever she is?

I get that they were dealing with a lot of restrictions and unknowns, but they couldnβt get a better lineup than this? CNCO and Doja on the main show was questionable. They would normally be pre-show artists. Would love to have seen BLACKPINK, Taylor, Cardi, Harry Styles, Drake, Post Malone, Dua, Megan, Billie... this felt like a Gaga Tribute concert tbh. She was amazing but couldnβt carry a 2 hour show on her own.

A friend asked me to watch so she could have someone to talk to during the show lmao; I'm gonna cut them some slack for the obvious circumstances but I have to admit I was utterly bored. The fun of the VMAs is the notion that the unexpected and unscripted can happen at anytime, which obviously can't happen during what was mostly a pre-taped, pre-recorded show.
I have to wonder what was the point of getting everyone in New York when it was never really "live"... they could have gotten more interesting performers if they had allowed everyone to pre-tape remotely (like they did with BTS).
The winners were boring because the nominees were a mess. I love Gaga but she was winning by default.

I love BLACKPINK but how did they win the song of the summer over Dababy and Roddy Rich, Dua Lipa, or Harry Stiles?

So The Weeknd won Best R&B with his STRAIGHT UP 100% POP SONG? Urgh I wish he would've addressed that issue in his speech.

It was a boring show, This show hasnβt been the same for years and really the only good performances tonight were from Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande. Ariana posted VMAs pics on her IG and was nowhere to be seen besides the performance. This show has lost itβs luster and has became a non-event.

At least Blinding Lights won Best Music Video, though wtf at Savage winning Best Hip-Hop over The Box.
You can tell they catered a lot of the winners toward stan Twitter.

I found the show depressing, purely because of the makeup of it, which is totally out of anyone's control, but having presenters and performers who essentially existed as singular people with no interaction speaking to what felt like nobody other than a camera, with a setting that felt too synthetic even though they were going for a Time's Square thing, it was just depressing to me. The human element was gone. No audience shots. No reaction shots. The performances were all pre-recorded so it really lacked the soul of an actual live production. It's amazing how much of a difference some of that stuff makes but honestly, it's kind of why I watch these types of shows. Sure, for the performances, but also for what's happening off stage too.
Every time I think of the VMAs, I always think of the rough-around-the-edges, dinginess, edginess of the 90s award shows.

Remember the days when weβd get a surprise performance by a huge star. I knew that wasnβt going to happen this year because MTV would have milked a Taylor or BeyoncΓ© or Adele performance for all that its worth.
I tune in every year hoping they somehow restore this to its golden years and every year I promise I wonβt watch it the next year.... lol here I am looking like a big olβ clown. Theyβre lucky thereβs nothing better to do.
I canβt believe they couldnβt have gotten BLACKPINK to release the MV for Ice Cream on the show. Or get Taylor to release her next single on the show. Something surprising and worth waiting for.

At least Blinding Lights won Best Music Video, though wtf at Savage winning Best Hip-Hop over The Box. Does "Savage" even have a proper music video? All I remember was that forgettable animated video and that's it. I'm confused with the direction of MTV in general. They don't even play music anymore, they've lost many of their audience.

The VMA's are a huge joke but the fact that The Weeknd won Video Of The Year just feels so perfect, he literally dominated the year. Nobody killed it as much as he did.

I think The Weeknd should have got Artist of the Year and Gaga and Ariana Video of the Year, not the other way around.

I honestly don't think Rain On Me's video is that great, I like Blinding Lights better. However you are right that it would make sense for The Weeknd to take Artist of the Year and Gaga to take VOTY.

Respectfully disagree on ROM deserving VOTY. The video was kinda bland by Gaga standards, the choreography wasn't that interesting, and it's not all that memorable.
I feel that Weeknd's recent aesthetic in music videos: the glasses, the red suit, the Vegas lights and setting, that's iconic and memorable. You're immediately going to know Blinding Lights and by extension, After Hours when you see that, and so I think that it deserves it's win.

Also, the fake audience made me uncomfortable. Like when Keke opened the show and was obviously in front of a green screen and having the audience yell. It just seemed so bizarre.
Then Gaga and Ariana along with the whole dance crew came out with masks, it just seemed so dystopian. Like historians are gonna look back at this years show and see how fucking crazy everything was.

I was honestly more annoyed at the fact that they couldn't make these performances live given that the show was pre-recorded and not in front of any audience.

Yeah why did Roddy and Maluma J Balvin back out? Obviously they were all pre-recorded performances. What, did MTV decide to pre-record the show like 2 weeks ago?
