In a decade with some of the most powerful and booming vocals to ever grace the pop world, this stands out as a titan. I can also completely understand how it could be overbearing to someone.
There's only one song by Bill and Bobby that I would have ranked higher, but I would have had a super tough time deciding on my top two, in that scenario.

As far as I'm concerned, this is Carole King's masterpiece. (Well, it's her and Gerry Goffin's masterpiece, but still)
The production in this song just far eclipses the standard of the time. It's actually amazing how far ahead of the curve it is.

If the act who performed my 22 were in this RD with a particular song, they would be in or near my top five. "Son of a Preacher Man" is great, but "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me" is it, just an emotional powerhouse of a song. It probably would have done worse than "Preacher", but a lot of songs would have done worse in this RD.

I'm not sure if the issue is Dusty's delivery or the song itself; I just know this song is quite listenable but never succeeds in reeling me in ![](https://fi.somethingawful.com/safs/smilies/4/1/shrug.001.gif)

Holy crap.
What truly makes this song great is how easy Etta makes it all sound. This is NOT an easy song to perform, and Etta just nailed it, like it was nothing. I prefer the bombast of "Unchained Melody", but there's no denying that "At Last" is one of the great vocal performances of its era.

I'm definitely rooting for "My Girl" (with a close second place vote to "House of the Rising Sun". I like "Wouldn't It Be Nice" a lot too, but it'd be such a zzz winner

The guitar work on this song is fire, especially for a song of its age. The only real comparison I can come up with is the way Jerry Lee Lewis attacked the piano. I have a specific love for the rowdy side of 50's rock 'n roll, and while I'm not the biggest fan of Chuck overall, "Johnny B. Goode" is undeniable. Would it, though? Have The Beach Boys ever even made the top 5 of a rankdown lol Perhaps my Web-esque bias against the Beach Boys is speaking on my behalf then, I haven't kept track of every RD they were in, I just sort of assumed they got royal treatment everywhere lol Yeah, it's mainly just that gates and I have seen the Beach Boys get tanked enough times that we don't take them performing very well for granted. (That, and this might actually be the first time they've ever made a top five, but that is very much [citation needed])

I'm burnt out enough on JBG for two lifetimes. Objectively I should love it, but I just don't feel anything while listening to the song no matter how many different lenses I try to hear it through

15. I Fall To Pieces (22): Her vocals/tone are really strong. The melody is strong too. I'm just not that big of a fan of this early country sound. 14. Then He Kissed Me (20): Very nice production, melody and lyrics. Vocals weren't as strong to me as those in other songs in this RD... 13. Heat Wave (19): Another song with strong production and melody, with vocals that I really enjoyed. 12. Long Tall Sally (12): GREAT instrumentation, energy, vocals, attitude. I almost put it in my top 10, so it's great to have this as a P-P-P-P! 11. Oh, Pretty Woman (6): Another classic gem! A couple pop radio stations put this in high rotation in 1990 due to the Pretty Woman soundtrack. I've loved this since the first time I heard it, and I still listen to it once in a while. Rich instrumental and production that wouldn't sound much out of place in several decades. Plus, his vocals are great. 10. Unchained Melody (2): Awwww. To me, this is one of the best songs ever. Period. I remember hearing this in the 80s through mom, and liking it, but then forgetting about it a bit. Then hearing Ronnie McDowell's cover version in a pop station in 1991, and then the original and re-recorded versions by The Righteous Brothers which became big hits back home that year, too. Great melody, perfect heartfelt vocals and harmonies, epic instrumentation, strong lyrics. A great song. 9. Will You Love Me Tomorrow? (7): The instrumentation here is ACE and ahead of its time. The tender but nostalgic melody and vocals work perfectly, too. Another gem. And at this point, I have to give credit to a random act -Jive Bunny & The Mastermixers ![](http://yoursmiles.org/ssmile/fun/s0244.gif) As much as they are criticized and mocked at, that cassette was responsible for my discovery of lots of classics. Their Lovers Mix for example helped me discover this song and 3 other gems that I consider amongst my favorites of al time: All I Have To Do Is Dream, Silence Is Golden, and Rhythm of the Rain --I already knew Diana. 8. Son Of A Preacher Man (21): I agree with Red --You Don't Have To Say You Love Me would've been in my top 10. This one is good, the chorus melody is strong and all, but doesn't captivate me as much as that other song. 7. At Last (16): Superb vocals, strong melody and instrumentation. All work perfectly for another great classic. 6. Johnny B. Goode (13): This is just FUN, with a great hook, strong instrumentation and melody. In the end, I preferred Long Tall Sally a bit more, but this was a very strong candidate to be in my top 10.

I think this is the first time this song has finished top five in a RD. That fact alone makes me happy.
There's just nothing like this song. The combination of Eric Burdon's booming vocals and the sprawling instrumental is otherworldly. This is easily top 100 all time for me, maybe even top 50.

Well, that was my last non-top ten...but, I mean, it's "Think". It's only one of the absolute classics of soul.
I'm also stunned it didn't win.
