Despite the pandemic we did manage to have probably the biggest and most eventful January/July this century in terms of notable releases. Those used to be the two months absolutely no big artists released during back in the pure sales days.
January: Eminem, Halsey, Mac Miller, Selena Gomez, Lil Wayne, Jackboys (Travis Scott and company)
July: Juice WRLD, Pop Smoke, Taylor Swift, Kanye (possibly), Dixie Chicks

I can't help but think that because of the 16 different physical deluxe editions being offered for just I week (presumably to be shipped out at a later date) that this is her way of taking advantage of the current rules so she can safely get a huge #1 debut, and thus more money, before the new rules come into play this fall, and that the album was initially planned for a later date. And because of all these deluxe editions, something tells me this wasn't meant to be a side project, but I could be wrong. Nevertheless, I am happy and excited to hear new music from her, and it will be nice to see a non-Hip Hop album be big after a while.

Taylor literally called it her "8th studio album" and this is reason why she's having 8 different cover version. this is not side project.

If Folklore is really a more alternative/folky album I can see it eating up awards. Folk/alternative + commercial success + bon iver = critical acclaim.

16 versions? ☠️☠️☠️☠️☠️ Isn’t next week the last chart week where BB will be counting such bundles anyhow? Well, it’s smart of her team to make the most of it until the rule comes into play, even though Lady Gaga got dragged across Twitter for doing the same. Isn't 16 versions different than 16 bundles?

And wait until Taylor releases her re-records in November (or whenever it's legal).... This is a low-risk, high reward for Taylor - obviously a tour isn't integral to this release - so she can do live stream promo and if it passes the 'critic' test - it's a big win. If it 'bombs,' no biggie.
I'm a bit floored at the huge gap BL still has over the rest of the pack.
Not surprised at the solid holds from Juice tracks.

taylor is a bigger streaming force than both of them (possibly combined) Overall, the only Female acts that are on the ‘Male’ Streaming artists levels, if we count overall totals, are: Rihanna (even though she’s released one album in the streaming era), Ariana Grande and Billie Eilish. Yes and no, Taylor's catalog streams like crazy and she's constantly the most streamed female artist on RS.

I wonder at what point Billboard starts counting these Deluxe editions as separate albums? Kinda like what happened with Jennifer Lopez's "I'm Real" where they ruled remixes that were significantly different would chart separately from the original versions. Re-releasing a new version of the same album every other week with a dozen new tracks is the streaming equivalent of merch bundles, as far as gaming the charts goes. Honestly, you'd think these artists and their labels would rather have multiple number one albums instead of an extra week in the top 5 (or even at number one) for one album anyway.

^Yeah. Didn't deluxe editions actually start as CD releases? I guess the two most famous once that come to mind before the streaming ones are The Fame Monster and Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection.

Honestly, you'd think these artists and their labels would rather have multiple number one albums instead of an extra week in the top 5 (or even at number one) for one album anyway. The old rule last time this was a thing SOMETHING OLD, SOMETHING NEW Hi Gary, My question is in regard to album re-releases. We have seen that a fair number of albums, hugely successful or not, get re-released in some way or another. What is the new-song limit that Billboard has when counting an album as a re-release or not? I remember Rihanna's album "Good Girl Gone Bad" was 're-loaded' with three new tracks last year, but the chart life of the album was combined with its first version. Will the Nov. 23 re-release of Lady Gaga's debut collection, re-entitled "The Fame Monster," be considered a re-release or a new album? It will contain not three or four new songs, but eight, which is even more than those on a standard EP or Taylor Swift's "Platinum Edition" of "Fearless," which contains six new songs. Thank you, Juan Croussett Tampa, Florida Hi Juan, For the clearest explanation as to how Billboard will chart the releases you mention, I asked Billboard 200 chart manager Keith Caulfield. Here is his response: "Billboard has many guidelines about the merging of so-called special edition albums with their original parent albums. Generally speaking, two or more versions of an album will not be merged if the title of the special edition version is substantially different from the original. For Lady Gaga's 'The Fame' and 'The Fame Monster,' we feel that the change was in line with what we've allowed in the past (a la Rihanna's 'Good Girl Gone Bad' and 'Good Girl Gone Bad Reloaded'). "Additionally, for our chart purposes, there is no limit as to how many audio tracks or songs can be added to an original album, as long as the additional audio content does not extend beyond one additional CD (or digital equivalent) and the content of the standard edition remains intact. "Thus, the reissue of Lady Gaga's 'The Fame' in a deluxe version ('The Fame Monster') with additional songs will have its sales combined with the original 'Fame' album. The same goes for the 'Platinum Edition' of Taylor Swift's 'Fearless'."

This was a trend in the mid-2000s that proved to be pretty successful. In This Skin, Confessions and The Emancipation of Mimi being the most prolific that come to mind.
