Drakes records are like hitting home runs in baseball on steroids. Numbers are higher and more impressive but impossible to compare to others Tell that to the people who feel like his achievements shouldn't count or matter at all like he didn't see success in both the digital era (the era he debuted in) and the streaming era. People will just have to keep being mad at his success, I guess. I even prefer it that way.

Really do not care for these records, these rules are simply too different for the different eras, there was a time when without physical single was not eligible to chart. This is all nonsense and Drake is not and will not belong to this music's greats list. Lmao. Keep seething. The records will stand and there's nothing you or anyone else can do about it. Seething? What is this, 4chan? Drake is the biggest artist in this generation, no doubt, but most people judge by most copies sold when they compare all time greats because it puts all artists from time and space on a level playing field. There is a list of the highest selling artists in the world in Wikipedia. And oops, Drake is not top 10. Billboard wasn't there all those years ago and it took a while for artists to gun for #1s in other charts around the world. That is what the other poster meant.

The Drake songs are so boring that I don't even have anything negative or any complaints about their top 10 debuts. Just move along and drop next week, k thx.

Billboard wasn't there all those years ago and it took a while for artists to gun for #1s in other charts around the world. That is what the other poster meant. Lmao it most certainly does not. That’s actually hilarious. Comparing raw numbers is easily the worst way to compare different music from different periods. A song selling 1 million in 2012 is completely incomparable to a song selling 1 million in 1990. Just as an album selling 1 million in 2000 is completely different to an album selling 1 million in 2020. Charting is somewhat better, but obviously has its flaws too. Anyways, every Hot 100 record is tied to a landscape at the time that helped achieve it. Circles broke the record because songs chart in top 10 longer than ever in general. Old Town Road broke the record because songs spend #1 longer than ever before. Bad got 5 #1s because during the time albums were pumping multiple #1s more than ever before. The Beatles occupied the entire top 5 in 1964 in a way that wouldn’t have been possible in say 2004 when Urban/Rhythmic radio dictated the highest Hot 100 positions and there was a lack of physical singles for radio hits all around. Ariana having 4 #1 debuts is something that wouldn’t have happened in 1980. I don’t know why specifically with these most entries records people start this discussion but at this point everyone knows the facts of times change and every record is thus reflective of that.

Billboard wasn't there all those years ago and it took a while for artists to gun for #1s in other charts around the world. That is what the other poster meant. Put the Drake disscusion on hold. Is it an even playing field. The same way you can't compare Hot 100 achievements from 80s vs now (just as raw numbers), you can't compare 80s sales vs now (even if you use SPS). From 2015 to now only 1 album is Diamond (Adele's 25), apart from that the highest album is at 6M units. In the 80-84 there are 14 Diamond albums. How is the playing field even ? inb4 - don't come with the excuse the albums had more time to accumulate sales - it is bullѕhit. Sales were just that higher during the period. As for the Wikipedia page, it is not reliable. Why? It combines album sales and song sales at 1:1 ratio. How is a song sold for less than a dollar the same as an album sold for 10 bucks ?
Edit: Here are sales numbers - to give you a better picture why you can't compare a 2004 album vs 2014 album (random years). It is even worse the more apart the years are. Total Album Sales (physical + digital albums) 2014: 257 million 2013: 289.41 million 2012: 315.96 million 2011: 330.57 million 2010: 326.15 million 2009: 373.9 million 2008: 428.4 million 2007: 500.5 million 2006: 542.4 million 2005: 618.9 million 2004: 667 million 2003: 687 million 2002: 681 million 2001: 763 million 2000: 785 million 1999: 754.8 million 1998: 711 million 1997: 651.8 million 1996: 616.6 million

Drake's numbers are obviously impressive, but why do some of you guys end up getting so defensive lol Ask the people who always have something to say when Drake and ONLY Drake achieves anything. Taylor Swift will debut a couple of songs in the top 10 next week. I can bet you, nobody will have anything to say about that, but when Drake does the same thing, all hell breaks loose. As long as people keep bitching about Drake's success/achievements, it'll keep getting addressed.

We've now had 4 #1 sellers this year that were at 15k or lower (Savage, Savage, God Bless the USA, Popstar). At this point last year, we'd only had one #1 seller that was at 30k or lower (Shallow). I wonder if by the middle of next year, even getting to 5 digits will be a minor victory. I feel so old buying digital music. And CDs. I feel old because I don't even think streaming music should be the same as buying it.... I feel like when I start streaming I probably won't feel the same about the song I "streamed" if I didn't buy it... I felt the same way with digital over cd and ownership. Perhaps I will get over it or just listen to the radio and get over music and stop stanning etc???? It's a weird time right now with music.

It isn’t the same, if the same amount of people that stream a song in a given week buy the song instead, the song would get more points than if they streamed the song instead

Think whatever you want, lmao.

I’m not surprised that many people here assume that Gary is ‘Gary Trust’. ‘Dr.Luke’ and ‘’Danja’ each had an account on Pulse between 2006-2008 so... anything is possible. 💀 That was this forums peak to be honest. wait seriously? what was his screen name? I'd love to see his posts! lol

Drake is certainly the biggest artist of the last whatever years but.... when you compare Drake to Madonna for example. Yes Drake had success in the digital era and the streaming era and with 40 top 10's he just passed Madonna's 38. The vast majority of Madonna's 38 came in an era where a charting single was something you had to walk into the store and purchase and they were released one at a time In the digital and streaming eras, everything is eligible to chart the day of release If the same rules existed in Madonna's era, would the number still have been just 38? I can say for certain it would have been at least one higher -- 'Into The Groove' did not chart here but was top 10 on R&R for example.

If anything, positions are better at being even-playing fields

For some reason, I thought the chris brown song went top 10 without a video but it makes sense.
Well, this only proves had he not messed up his career he'd have like 15 #1s and would really be hyped up as the modern-day Michael Jackson.

I mean the career he has now after all of that isn't bad at all. He was just chillin with Drake in the Top 10 not too long ago, and now he's right in it.

This debate again? :) It's a given that chart feats in the digital and streaming eras are other animals compared to those achieved by acts who achieved their overall peak success with new music prior to those.
Drake's feats are certainly impressive - can't imagine one would argue otherwise - and should be compared mostly to other hot acts who emerged/saw their biggest overall success in the digital/streaming era, when it became possible for all tracks from an album to chart and to score many chart entries thanks to the collaborative nature of hip-hop. Obviously, he's left most of them in the dust.
