This show must be dead in the water if there’ve been no replies in nearly an hour and it’s still on.

Bebe was just there.... The make dancer has much more star power than her. Doja did great though!

Did anyone cared about this show (outside the BTS army of course)? Ariana wasn't there, Taylor wasn't there, Gaga wasn't there...

10,000 Hours over ROM, WAP, and Savage?? Literally what lmao I think the only likely reasoning behind it is that the strong fanbases divided their votes between the three female collaborations, while Beliebers and country fans focused solely on "10,000 Hours", which allowed it to win. That was a bizarre winner, regardless, especially since it was by far the weakest song of the bunch. But hey, that's fan-voted awards for you. Reminds me of last year when "Señorita" won over "Shallow", "Old Town Road", "Happier", and "Sunflower" :|

In the latest TV ratings, ABC’s broadcast of the American Music Awards averaged 3.8 million total viewers and a 0.9 demo rating, plunging more than 40 percent from last year’s fast nationals — which is in keeping with a decidedly downward trend in pandemic-era awards shows. I wonder whether tv in general (not streaming television) has dropped in ratings? TV and networks rely on people in routines and covid has presumably messed all that up. I think it’s high time award shows sign up with a streaming channel and go out that way. Obviously start out live but allow people to stream after the fact too.

I don’t watch tv shows on tv anymore, but I did look up This Is Us and Grey’s Anatomy, as those are the only shows I can think of atm lol. Their ratings so far seem to be fairly on par with last season. I know it’s not a help for the general question, but at least two shows don’t seem to be too effected. ETA: Maybe they’re not great examples, as they are already established shows.

So, VMAs numbers were actually impressive in comparison. That had only 5% decline.

It could just be part of the wider conversation (which would also include the Hot 100) of the music industry shifts as a whole with different genres becoming more and more segmented. Award shows used to encompass most styles of music, and ones like the Grammys and even the VMAs had a pretty respectable following, but perhaps people are less interested in wading through the ‘social-media pop stars’ and thus just don’t bother tuning in. I think it might be a reflection of the overall quality and value of current music.

Yea I don't think people really have need to see the artists on TV, they can see what they are doing on social media on almost daily basis.
Artists like Adele, Taylor Swift and Beyoncé (and perhaps Rihanna?) a have that "mysterious super star aura" that can still draw some viewers though.

I know for me personally, I don't feel I have the time (but I actually do lol) or desire (this is accurate) to sit through a three hour show, when all I want to see is who won the awards, and maybe at best a handful of performances. I'll now just wait for the performances I want to watch, to be put on Youtube and watch them at my own leisure. Also, I'm not really into fan voted awards, so award shows that are not (solely) voted on via twitter for example, appeal more to my liking - i.e ACM, CMA, Grammys. Off-topic, but looking at the CHR charts, I have never even heard the #1 song "Mood" so maybe it's me just being an aging millennial not giving a shit about shows like the VMA's, EMA's, etc. and the new crop of "Pop stars"

I do think the awards show system is dead. In this social media world, where we can follow every star all the time, it's pretty pointless to wait for awards shows appearances or performances.

I do watch them all because I like the concept, even though I know it's outdated. I would much prefer to watch them on streaming so I can skip through what I don't care about. One thing, however, I did enjoy about the AMAs is how many awards they gave out on air. Each segment had an award and a performance. The Grammys NEED to go back to this. It kept the show flowing fairly well and it didn't feel like it dragged on. The Grammys typically have more speeches and stuff, but they absolutely need to include more than 8 awards given out across a nearly four-hour show. People may not care as much about music awards the way they do movie awards (though I think even the Oscars have dropped in ratings too) but as you've said, the performance aspect isn't as exciting as it used to be.

Regular TV has been dropping steadily dver since streaming TV became a thing. I remember some 4-5 years ago when I used to follow TV ratings as well a show getting a 0.9 demo would be a straight cancel. Award shows were getting some 7-8 million viewers and 2.0 ratings. Pandemic certainly helped accelerate, but the decline has been going on way before.

I was for some reason watching an older Grammys ceremony on Youtube a bit ago, and I forget how many awards were presented, it was at least 10 I think, but some seemed so obscure and would never fly today. Like, I think if memory serves me well, there was a category in the Classical genre presented on air. I didn't watch the AMA's but I'm glad to hear they presented an acceptable amount (in our eyes) of awards on air.

I also liked to see more awards being presented... but I disliked that the nominees’ music wasn’t heard. I’ve seen this in other awards, too. For the main categories they play a few seconds of the songs in the video, even though most viewers have heard Blinding lights, Circles, don’t start now, far too many times. But then they don’t play music of the Latin, Soul, or Country genres that a high share of viewers have not heard of? That extra music would’ve added less than a couple of minutes!
